Tomorrow night at 8 PM, I’ll be in Decatur, Georgia for the YATL Show with some amazing authors: Kati Gardner, Elizabeth Tammi and Jessica Khoury! ✨ It’s going to be fun, and I’d love to see you if you can come! Samira Ahmed is also going to be there tomorrow night in conversation with Julian Winters at 6:30 PM. Check out my stories to see more details. ✨ This is going to be my last event for a little while as I’m about to go full hermit mode to draft my fourth book. I’ve set a deadline for myself to have a complete first draft by May 18, so that gives me just under 2 months. Y’all hold me accountable and let’s see if I can meet that goal! ✨ Also… I baked a Buttermilk Pie and almost burned the kitchen down so that’s how my Tuesday is going so far. How about yours?
Hi! Could you give a little insight as to how you write action scenes? Thanks!
Ah, action scenes. They are exciting but can also be difficult to write. I have to think about how the human body moves, what is possible, what is impossible, etc. It helps to get up from my desk and move around and reenact it (kinda, haha).
If your characters are in a sword fight, you need to do research on swordsmanship, so you can get the terminology correct. I used MEDIEVAL SWORDSMANSHIP by John Clements as a guide for all of my sword play scenes. It was extremely helpful.
The main thing is to keep your action scenes simple and clear. The movements and your writing. You don’t want to overburden or muddle the scene for your reader.
Where do you find inspiration for writing? I really want to write fantasy and my dream is to write an amazing YA fantasy book, but I don’t know how to think of an original idea!
I find inspiration everywhere: in nature, in conversations, in memories, in music, in art, in dreams. I know sometimes it feels like there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to stories, but there is! Because no two writers are going to write the same story the same way.
All that being said, I understand what you’re saying. You want to write something original and unique, and at the same time, you’re already carrying all the stories you’ve ever read in your heart, and they can easily influence you in your own creation.
So here is something I recommend doing: keep a brainstorming journal.
In your journal, jot down your ideas. They can be snippets of scenes, dialogue, how your characters look or act, secrets and plot twists, the way the food tastes and the wind smells. This will help warm you up. And then choose a prompt and begin writing. Let the words flow; let your imagination go. Don’t think too hard about it. See what you come up with. You may have something spark, something you want to keep writing and exploring. Or you may even have another idea branch out from that one. That’s how the best ideas work: they are organic and unfurl and multiply and grow on their own.
If you need some help thinking of prompts, here are a few I love to play around with:
A forest that slows time
Friendly dragons
Not-so-friendly dragons
Sisters meeting for the first time
A night that lasts all summer
A circus
A boy who can breathe underwater
A girl with rainbow hair
A broken clock
Wings
Flying lessons
An Elf family reunion
An antique store that holds dangerous secrets
Which artists would you say inspire your writing and ideas? I’m on the look for new inspiration!
So recently I stumbled across an artist on Instagram and I am in love with her work. You can find her @ winterofherdiscontent
She has some amazing Rey and Kylo Ren art (if you happen to be a Star Wars fan) :D
I also just recently discovered Sibylline Meynet on IG and I LOVE her art so much. She has some amazing women in armor pieces.
