365 Questions for a Better Me, August edition.
I am such a slacker, I totally forgot to post for July so I’m skipping July and moving straight to August (on the last day of the month). Of course, this isn’t my idea. I found the fabulous idea over at debbieinshape.com and you too can participate if you’d like! Obviously, there aren’t 365 questions in this post but by the end of the year, there will be.
So, on with the August questions!
What do you do when your plan fails? Make a new plan. I’m one of those take things as they come at me kind of people. I hate making plans because when they go awry it’s easier to start new than redo a whole list of an itinerary. I’m a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl in life and in writing.
Do you change your mind easily? No. I actually do a ton of research before I make any decision no matter what it is. So, if something strikes my fancy you better believe I know every detail and fact about whatever I’m deciding on including purchases or beliefs.
If you could spend quality time with someone special, who would this person be? I live a long way from both my BFF’s and I’ve got friends all over the country from moving around so often. I’d love to hang out with them all because I miss them so much!
What do you believe you deserve in life? Everything. I think if I can dream it, I deserve it. If I work my ass off, I might even earn it.
How important is it to have dinner with your family? Eh… I know this is a big thing but I’ve never been dedicated to it and yet my family is still close enough that we tell each other everything. If it’s something you love, awesome. For me, the woman who rarely cooks, it’s not important unless it’s a holiday.
Where do you want to be by this time next year? I’d like to be on my way to becoming an author people have actually heard of. I’d love to have the film rights for my books sell (I’ve had an offer… but a no go on my side). Now I’m just waiting on the right offer. (Email me!!) I just really want to excel in my writing career because it’s truly my passion.
How do you define love? I think love is subjective just like everything else in life. Everyone is so different that love will never look the same for two different people. For me, love is when you know you can count on someone to have your back in both good and bad situations. Someone who sees me for who I am and doesn’t waiver. Someone who can deal with my filthy mouth and not judge me.
How do you spend most of the day: sitting or standing? I’m a writer, I’m pretty much sitting most of my days. Unless I’m cleaning. Or shopping.
How do you deal with compliments? My husband says not well. I can’t say I’m complimented a lot but when I am it’s weird. I’m thankful but it’s definitely weird. I don’t like the attention on me. I don’t love to talk about myself. It’s something I probably need to work on.
What used to make you happy when you were a kid? Summers, the sun, and music. My grandparents had a pool so I spent most of my time with headphones in lying in the sun. I was the kid with headphones on constantly. I didn’t grow up to be any different either.
What makes you sad? The state of America. For real. We need a change.
Is there anything that causes you to stress on a regular basis? Money! I might have a book published but I’m far from rich. We live in a rough world and money doesn’t always come easily. We run our own seasonal business so winters (LONG Montana winters) are rough for us.
If you had more free time, what would you do? If I had more time and money I’d definitely travel.
What was the last TV program you watched? CNN. I’m a news junkie. Facts matter.
Pizza or popcorn? I’m on a diet so right now I’d choose popcorn because it’s low in calories (unless it’s movie theater popcorn, mmmm so good.). Down 22 pounds!
What are your plans for your next vacation? Vacation? I don’t know this word.

How I’m feeling on release day!
It’s here! It’s here! After writing this book twice (basically) The Lucky Dress has been released today!
Finally!
I adore this book, these characters are my best friends, but that’s honestly my thought on this release. Finally.
I’m going to be really honest with you guys in this post which is really hard for me to do sometimes. I have a hard time opening up to people, especially with my feelings and despite my mostly upbeat attitude, I don’t always feel that way, because you know, I’m human.
As most of you know, The Lucky Dress was first published at this time last year as Little Gray Dress. I even topped some Amazon genre charts at #1 (WOW!). I was an Amazon bestselling author, it was a dream come true. But, drama struck, I had some publisher problems and in February I left my previous publisher and signed with the fabulous Aria Fiction (Head of Zeus). They wanted to sign me for four books, the first to publish would be a rebranded, new title, new cover, rewrite with 20k words added, Little Gray Dress, now known as The Lucky Dress. I was beyond thrilled. The book had done so well that I wanted it to be improved. I was reading reviews and saw some things I wanted to change with the new publication. Not many authors get the chance to rewrite a previously released book and I was getting just that. Before I started the rewrite I reread through all the reader reviews (over 300, all still there with the Little Gray Dress audiobook, which will stay as the first edition version) to get ideas on what might need to be changed. I took some of your advice and I think changed the book for the better. That’s what a well-written book review will do, it will help the author become a better writer. And voila, six months later, on August 7th, 2018 (TODAY!) The Lucky Dress was released into the world! (purchase info below)
Having the same book republished a year after the first publication isn’t easy. Getting the word out that it’s NOT a sequel but a rebranded rerelease is hard. Explaining WHY it’s being republished when you don’t want to throw anyone under the bus, even harder. I’ve been posting about this for months but am still getting the questions if it’s a sequel? It’s not. There’s been a rewrite, scenes changed, words added, but it’s not a sequel.
I’ve been fearful that the book wouldn’t sell because it did so well the first time and essentially this is the same book rereleased. I’ve been nervous that I’d lose readers for having to basically start completely over as a debut author. I’ve worried that I’d lose readers who are patiently waiting for my next book (which is written and going through the editing process now). I’ve had SO many fears. I’ve been withdrawn and quiet because I didn’t know where I stood in the writing world? I was an author with a book that did well but once it was pulled to go to the new publisher, what was I then? I felt like I was in limbo, nervous about my future, the book’s future, my dream of being an author, and overthinking anything that popped into my head. I gave up on my street team, was at a loss of what to actually post on my author pages, and just generally lost in where my dream was headed.
So, Now I’m a brand new author for the second year in a row. I feel better about my future as an author today. I feel motivated to reconnect with readers and to make the most of my new opportunity as an author. I’m ready to jump back into the publishing world with both feet and try to contain my filthy mouth in the process.
Most authors will understand me when I say that by the time a book comes out, we’re excited… WAY freaking excited, so don’t get me wrong here but we are also completely sick of reading our own book. We’ve been through it a thousand times and we are ready for it to be in the world with the readers so we can finally stop working on it. I feel that way, times two. I’ve literally been working on this book for TWO YEARS. I’m tired. I’ve been so looking forward to this day not only because I’m excited for it to finally be in the world again but because I can’t wait to start editing my second book! And writing my third! I’m ready to move on from The Lucky Dress editing and writing phase and bring you guys something new. And it’s coming.
Book two (title not ready for release quite yet, and NOT a sequel) is about a brand new couple, Henry & Ambri, in PDX dealing with some heavy issues but still keeping their humorous side intact. It’s another romantic comedy (if you’re expecting something else from me, I’m probably not your author lol) with a bit of a heavier issue at play as well.
I’ve also started on book three, the ever requested ‘Liam’ story. Yup, if you read all the way through The Lucky Dress you will have seen that Liam is getting his own story next year. That was always the plan since the moment I wrote I wrote him. The Lucky Dress is Jack and Emi’s story, NOT Liam’s.
I also want to say thank you. Thank you to Aria and their entire team for taking me on with a previously published book and helping to turn it into something 100% better than the first run. Thank you to my readers for being so patient and understanding what’s gone on in the last year with my experience as a first time author. You live and you learn and you keep going even when things fall apart. Thank you to my agent, Sarah, who’s believed in me and taken on a side of my publishing career that I don’t always understand and thankfully don’t really have to with her around. Thank you to my beta readers who graciously read my second book and gave feedback reminding me that I’m not a terrible writer like I felt. You gave me encouragement when I needed it the most and I thank you for that. Thank you to my family, author and non-author friends who’ve stuck by me during a year that was both crushing and exciting. There has been a lot going on behind the scenes in my life both good and bad and I’m SO thankful for friends who truly care. I don’t open up easily and I’m not a big talker, I’m completely socially awkward, and I have a hard time making connections with people, so if you’ve stuck by me through my debut publishing year or two, you’re the best and I just can’t say thanks enough. And finally to all the book bloggers that have supported me, some of you twice, you are such a blessing to the publishing community. As a former book blogger myself I know you do this for free, and often without thanks. I appreciate you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for spreading the word on books you love so that others can enjoy them too!
Don’t give up on me guys, The Lucky Dress is only the beginning!! I hope you’ll read it, reread it, share it with your friends and family, review it, rereview it, and sign up for my newsletter or follow me on social media so you don’t miss upcoming announcements. I promise it’ll be fun!
***Please, if you read the book, leave a review on Amazon. It can be short and sweet and those stars matter. I know how much of a pain in the ass Amazon can be, trust me. But reviews are the only way to make sure our book is seen by new potential readers and the only way to make the bestseller lists so we can actually sell books. I SO appreciate you leaving a review and I hope if you loved the book that you’ll share it with your friends and family as well. Word of mouth from a happy reader can do SO much more for an author than us just standing around tooting our own horn.

Romance Book Ratings…
Have you ever read through the reviews of ANY romance novel? It doesn’t matter which one you choose they all have at least one reviewer who’s written something like this: ‘I wish someone would have warned me about the graphic sex! (or sex jokes).’ Or this one ‘I like books with sex scenes and this one had none. No Spice!’ There are lots of different heat levels when it comes to romance novels and not everyone likes them all. But expecting a certain level, or none, shouldn’t be happening at all.
I feel like there is something we could do to prevent people from buying a book they’re bound to not like due to its lack of or too much sex. I just wish it was easy. What could we do? Oh wait, I know! Maybe we could follow the movie/tv industry and use the PG, PG-13, R, & X rating right on the covers! Like video games and movies. They all use this very simple, very generic rating system and it’s the easiest way to tell if this book might be for you or not.
I mean come on Amazon, you use so many of your powers for bad, why not do something good that actually helps both authors AND readers?
I’ll even break it down for you.
G – Come on, this one won’t be valid because NO romance novel is gonna be rated G. It’s adult fiction. No one wants their 6-year-old reading a romance novel.
PG – This is perfect for those sweet romance books with no cursing, no sexual jokes, and zero sex. Maybe just a first kiss but nothing that’ll make ya blush.
PG-13 – This is where my books would fit in. Light cursing, closed-door sex scenes, crude jokes. Yup, this is the kind of book I write and read.
R – Like a little more sexy time in your reading material? This rating is for you. Sex scenes (nothing overly raunchy, 50 Shades won’t be in this category), cursing, crude jokes, it’s all there just for those who aren’t easily offended by this sort of thing.
X – And here’s your erotica category. (50 Shades, and the like, this is for you) If you love the moments that could make me blush with embarrassment, these books are for you.
It’s THAT easy. It would help out readers so much too because so many books are miscategorized. SO. MANY. The rating would help you see past the (possibly wrong) category and vague blurbs and see the actual content without giving away the story.
What do you think? Do you think ratings on romance books would help you out as a buyer? What about as an author?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

#MusicMonday – What I’m Listening to on a Loop This Week.
Hey, y’all!
So, I’ve been working on my third book this week, (yes, the Liam book) and I’ve been building a playlist as I write. These songs are from that list. Maybe it’s a little insight into what I’m writing? Who knows. (I’ll never tell… well, OK I will eventually but…ya know.) These songs are on repeat in my head just about eight hours a day. I love how music can influence your moods or even scenes your writing. It works for me and now I can’t write in silence! This week you get six songs instead of my usual five because I couldn’t decide between the last two!
Kamikaze, Walk The Moon
I don’t know this band. Not even a little bit but I stumbled across this song and fell in love with it. Now I just need to check out the rest of their work.
Bad Girls Don’t Cry, The Night Game
Another band I’ve never heard of but this song! It’s like the 80’s meet the 90’s meet something I love. Adore this one and have danced around the house cleaning more than once to it.
You Deserve Better, James Arthur
I LOVE James Arthur. In fact, some of his songs have made my previous book playlists. One even made a scene in The Lucky Dress! I have a feeling I’ll love anything this guy puts out there.
I Hate Love Songs, Kelsea Ballerini
Now I’m not a huge country fan but I’ll make an exception for this song (and maybe a few others, what can I say? I’m a complicated woman.). This song is exactly what I’ve based the leading lady of this book on. I just love everything this song is about (or not about?).
Ride or Die, The Knocks (featuring Foster The People)
I don’t know The Knocks, but I generally love anything by Foster The People and this song is no exception. So fun.
Set to Attack, Albert Hammond Jr
I don’t know Albert Hammond Jr and this is the first song by him that I’ve heard but I really love it. It’s very new age Beatles, and I don’t even like The Beatles. It just works for me somehow. He reminds me of James Bay.
Hope you love these ones! Have a song or band in mind you think I’d love? Tell me in the comments below. I just love finding new favorite songs!

#CoverReveal – The Lucky Dress by Aimee Brown
Oh. Em. Gee. You’ve no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this.
When my publisher decided to give the option to part ways I was excited but nervous. I knew Little Gray Dress deserved a real chance to make it in the world after a semi-rough start in the publishing industry. When I contact Aria Fiction I was nervous but my editor (Melanie) was (IS) so awesome! I can’t tell you what it means to an author who didn’t have the best first publishing experience to finally find a publisher that is as excited about my debut novel as I was. Aria gave me faith in publishing again. Thank you guys for that.
So… here it is, The Lucky Dress. Yes, this is a rebranded 2nd edition version of Little Gray Dress with a brand new title, gorgeous new cover, and a 20k word addition. If you loved Little Gray Dress, I really think you’ll love this version of the book even more! When I got ready to do the addition, I read through all my reviews and I’ll be honest, an author doesn’t get the chance to improve a book that’s been previously published very often, there was some great advice in some of those reviews that I did take. So, I thank you reviewers (some of you anyway) for giving me some great advice that I think might have just helped me improve my writing and definitely helped improve this story.
Thank you for checking out my new gorgeous cover (and sharing it!) and I hope you’ll pre-order the book and tell your friends, leave a review, and chat with me over on social media! And before you ask, YES… I’ve got more books coming. My next release is on its way in April 2018 and my third release in the winter of 2018/early 2019 is the Liam story. So, stay tuned for lots of exciting things coming from me. (I’ve got so many secrets I’ve been holding onto it’s not even funny anymore!)

A Finalist in the 2018 RONE Awards?
Holy Moses, you guys.
Yesterday I was notified that Little Gray Dress had been chosen as a finalist in the Sweet Romance category for the 2018 RONE Awards through InD’Scribe Magazine. You can find their website here – http://www.indscribe.com
I’ve never had my work submitted for any kind of award. I’m a little in shock. And of course, I’m honored beyond belief. I have no idea how any of this works but I’m really excited to find out! Of course, I love the book, and while it was available in print & ebook format it sold really well. The book will always be available in its original version in Audiobook (on Audible & Amazon). But to know it’s up for an actual award?! WOW! Do I feel like a real author or what?! It’s just absolutely mind-boggling that my first book has done this well.
Even though the print and ebook of the first edition of Little Gray Dress (the audiobook is, that will stay) is not available on Amazon right now (see below for info on this), they will still keep the original version of the book in the running. WHEW! I was kind of worried after my publishing nightmare over the last year.
I can’t wait for you guys to read the new version of it, The Lucky Dress, that is releasing on August 7th, 2018 through Aria Fiction. YOU WILL LOVE IT. (cover release & preorder coming VERY soon)
My fingers are crossed that I actually win (as are everyone else’s I’m sure! Which might be totally far-fetched, but that’s OK. Just being nominated is more than I ever expected. I’m absolutely thrilled. As of now (and this could change), we do plan to make the trek down to California to participate in the RONE Awards Ceremony & Gala event so if you’re going, hit me up! I’d love to meet some of you!
Well, that’s my news for the week. But… check back in because I’ve got a HUGE (I’m serious… H.U.G.E.) secret I’m keeping that will come out eventually. And trust me, it’s a good one…
Happy Thursday! (yes I did have to actually double check and make sure today is really Thursday)

My Writing Process…
I haven’t been a published author very long, about a year. I don’t consider myself to know everything about writing or publishing. I don’t think anyone does because it seems publishing changes every day and writing, well the more you write the more you yourself progress in talent and routine. I’m sure someone on the outside would tell me I’m doing it all wrong (there’s always at least one asshole). I’ve completed two novels in the last couple years. One was published last August as Little Gray Dress, it’s now republishing with a new publisher and rebranding as The Lucky Dress. Essentially I’ve written this book twice, as well as an additional book that will be released in Jan/Feb 2019.
When I wrote the original Little Gray Dress I was participating in NaNoWriMo the winter of 2017. I wrote that book in about 10 days, then went on to do a complete rewrite by the end of the month. When it went to my new publisher I added 20k words in a week. Considering I had time to think of what I’d like to change during the six months it was published, it wasn’t hard to add those words. My second book came to me one day in January 2018 and I had it written in two weeks. THIS was the book I wanted to write as my debut, but I just couldn’t find the right characters at the time.
To say I write the first draft quickly is an understatement. I never intend on writing them so fast but my personality is one where once I’m in the groove of something, I will obsessively work on it until it’s finished before being able to move onto anything else (like cleaning the house or cooking for my family lol). So when I sit to write a book, chances are if things flow, I’ll be sitting at the computer for twelve hours a day until it’s finished. I’ll go to bed late and wake up early. I’ll drink dozens of cups of coffee a day and eat only finger foods. I’m not sure why this system works for me, but it does. The fact that I can type almost 100 words a minute means sometimes I’m typing faster than I’m thinking and rewriting what I just wrote five thousand times until I love it.
Before I find that story that has me ignoring life as I write it, I’ll sit and try to force a story out over a period of a few weeks. As happens every single time, I’ll hit about the 20k mark and delete the whole damn thing. It always ends up going nowhere when I try to write how I consider is ‘normal’. Apparently, it’s not so normal for me.
I recently signed a 4 book deal with Aria Fiction (woot!!). My first release (August 7th, 2018) will be my debut novel Little Gray Dress, rebranded as The Lucky Dress, with a new cover (cover release coming VERY soon) and 20k word addition (if you read LGD, I promise you’ll love these changes – reviewers, I listened to you, some of you that is). My second book was complete when I signed the contract and it will be released in Jan/Feb of 2019. The third book in the contract is the ever popular requested ‘Liam Story‘, which I’ve started and deleted about five hundred times in the last few months. Liam has consistently been on my mind and I’m this | | close to planting my ass in this chair and writing for a week to tell his story. I actually feel it coming soon, as in the next few weeks soon. Because it’s been brewing and making it’s way to the surface with all the right plot points and characters, I’ve been desperately trying to get other things in order in other areas of my life because when I disappear, I disappear until the first draft is written right up to those magical words The End.
Once I’ve completed my first draft I’ll let it sit for a week or so before coming back to it and hashing through it, adding on 10-20k more words. Rereading and rewriting over and over and over until I’m happy enough to send it off to beta readers for their opinions before I start in on my third rewrite. It all sounds a little nutty but it works for me, somehow.
I’ve thought about why this process works for me and I think I’ve figured it out. I always love fall when all the new TV shows come out, and finding one everyone is talking about that I can’t wait to watch. I’ll keep up with it until about episode four and then I’ll forget about it and not remember until the series is over years later and then I’ll binge watch the entire eight seasons in less than a week on Netflix or Hulu. I just can’t stay interested when something is drug out over a long period of time and I guess that also goes for me when I write. I need to ‘strike while the iron is hot’, so they say. I’m not complaining at all. In fact quite the opposite. I’ve come to love the way the story comes together, even as quickly as it does. It also helps me stay true to my characters and not lose my voice for that particular story.
So that’s it. I’ve got little patience, and I want instant gratification I guess, so I write like the wind and then take a break until editing starts. It works for me.
How about you, any weird writing routines when you write?
Tell me in the comments below!

#MusicMonday with Aimee…
What’s been playing on a loop in my head? Well, below you can find out.
Here are my top five songs of the week, that I’ll likely listen to until I’m completely sick of them.
1- Sway, by Blue October
I swear Blue October will always be on my Music Monday lists. They just have so many amazing songs and they continually put out more and more. It’s safe to say that they are my favorite band and have been for the last ten years. Plus… Justin Furstenfeld… yummy.
2- The Sky Is A Neighborhood, by Foo Fighters
Another band that could land on my list weekly. This song… I dunno what it is but I adore it.
3- No Roots, by Alice Merton
This girl… dayumn, she’s good. And that’s coming from a girl who’s not the biggest fan of female singers for reasons I don’t understand. I first found her Lash Out song and quickly realized that she’s freaking amazing. This song is no exception. Love it. I’m now a fan.
4- Girls Like You, by Maroon 5 (feat. Cardi B)
What woman on the planet doesn’t adore Adam Levine… he’s dreamy. His new song and new video (below) is an amazing tribute to strong women. I love this one, as I do all Maroon 5’s music. Well done guys.
5- Pictures of Girls, by Wallows
I stumbled upon this group a couple weeks ago only to discover that the lead singer is also Clay on 13 Things I Hate About You. Wow! He’s got a great voice and the song is truly addicting. I can’t wait to see where these guys go.
Have a song or band you think I’d love?
