Greg Jenner is a British public historian with a particular interest in communicating history through pop culture and humour. He is the Historical Consultant and co-writer on all seven series of BBC's multi-award-winning comedy show HORRIBLE HISTORIES, being solely responsible for the factual accuracy of over 1,500 sketches and 100+ comedy songs, and is the author of A MILLION YEARS IN A DAY.

Raised in Kent, Greg studied for 4 years at the University of York but couldn't afford to pursue a PhD in Medieval Literature. Instead he spent the past decade in the UK's TV industry, working on an assortment of historical documentaries, dramas, comedies, and digital interactive projects for BBC, ITV, CHANNEL 4, CHANNEL 5, DISCOVERY USA, HISTORY USA, a

The show is a big hit with children, and it was hugely inspiring to see the impact it was having on their love of history. But I was meeting so many adults who said history was boring, or irrelevant, or they had hated it at school and it had given them a lifelong phobia of history books. I realised that, if I was serious about being a public historian, then I had to reach these people too.

My hope was to write an accessible, light-hearted book that wouldn't be off-putting to these people, but which would also surprise and delight history buffs. I thought the best way to do that was to write a book about the history of daily life - something everyone experiences - and, to ensure there's new information for everyone, I extended my remit all the way back to the Stone Age. I hope you enjoy the book! Thanks, Greg (less)

It gives me great satisfaction to meet audiences at book talks, and see what burning questions are on their mind. History is a subject that constantly inspires me; so much of modern culture and politics is influenced by what happened in the past. (less)

My favourite historical comedies!

I’ve just made a 3 hour BBC Radio 4 Extra documentary called Hilarious Histories: What’s So Funny About The Past? about how comedy writers have used history as source material. It’s a fun programme which you can hear on BBC Sounds here

But to promote the programme, I also wrote this short blog about my favourite historical comedies when I was growing up. Hope you like it!

The post My favourite...
