Theme Day!

The themes of Beyond Her Calling include (but are not limited to):

Self-worth in God
Striving to be the best you can be/being the best version of yourself
Our purpose
Forgiveness (mildly)
Putting others before yourself

Let’s break each of those down, shall we?

Self-worth in God

God created each of us to be beautiful, wonderful, intelligent, AWESOME people … and there’s no shame in recognizing that!

Pride comes from saying, “I’m awesome because of myself.” However, there’s nothing wrong with saying, “I’m awesome because of God.”

That’s exactly what He wants us to say, in fact. He wants us to claim that we are His beautiful creations. After all, He’s the one who looked at us and said we are “Good.”

That probably sounds like some new-agey “love yourself” crap. And it could be … unless you understand that it’s only through God, when He removes you (the bad) from you (the good) that the Awesome Person He Made shines!

Being the best version of yourself

It’s hard to be the best version of yourself. I admit that freely. However, it’s something to ever strive for.

When people think about becoming like Christ, it may be difficult for them to understand that they’re not losing your identity in Him.

They’re gaining a new identity as a child of God, yes … but that identity is just the best version of YOU.

God didn’t make us as mindless, identical robots. This is cliche, yes, but it’s true that we’re as individual as a snowflake – because God made us that way!

You can be as individual and different as you want. However, without God, you are not the best version of you – nor are you any different from the struggling masses seeking to be “special” and “unique.”

You are unique. God made you that way. However, without God, you can never hope to be the best “unique” you can be.

So lean on God for your individuality and to be the best version of yourself.

Our Purpose

God put us here for a reason – we all know that.

We discovered in At Her Fingertips that God’s plan isn’t always ours and that we need to follow His goals for our life about our own.

I tackle a different side of that in Beyond Her Calling. As you can probably guess, the story is about going beyond Ivy’s, well, calling.

Since Ivy is mentally disabled, it’s difficult for her to believe she has a purpose in this world. Or, rather, that’s the excuse she gives herself.

We all have excuses – reasons why God doesn’t have a glorious plan for us like He does for everyone else.

And I know you’ve (probably) heard this before, but it bears restating:

God DOES have a purpose for each and every one of us … and that purpose (e.g. calling) is more incredible that anything our human brains can imagine!

Forgiveness

This is a topic that is overdone in Christian fiction – forgiving others, forgiving yourself, forgiving God, etc.

It’s been hashed and rehashed. There’s not really much more to say.

However, for Jordy’s sake, I ended up including a couple nods to what I call the Most Popular Topic in Christian Fiction.

Jordy’s need to stop viewing himself as a clown incapable of being committed or serious about anything and forgive himself for all his past tomfoolery was a fun plotline to explore. (Though anything with Jordy is fun to explore, to be honest!)

Putting Others Before Yourself

This is one of the more subtle themes that I played with in Violet Angel as well as Calvin Blakely (although that plotline will have to be resolved another time).

Violet learns in the course of the story that she needs to give up herself and focus on others – or she will never truly be happy.

This is a theme close to my heart as I see it on the rise in contemporary society. (I especially see it in young parents and their children. Ugh.)

We live in a self-pleasing world. We always have, of course, but it bears restating. It probably always will. After all, loving others is the second greatest commandment, and Satan can’t like that!

And I’m not guiltless; I would call myself a very selfish person. But, you know, one can strive for better!

What the Readers Are Sayin’

We’ve only had a few readers so far, but here were there thoughts on theme:

Lisa @ Inkwell:

They both deal with problems self-worth … and the meaning of their lives and what God has planned for them and how much they matter to him – and the struggles were so real and touching and I love how, even though the clear and easy answer was provided, it wasn’t easy to TAP INTO IT, so to speak. It’s hard to explain. They KNEW what was true, but it was so difficult for them to FEEL and BELIEVE it anyway.

Grace Morris:

Ivy…. She was wonderful! I love her journey of finding God’s calling for her.

Amie @ Crazy A:

It is one of those books that you read, and you just know that the Lord must have put the words to write in the author’s mind. It was a super sweet story, full of the right amount of laughter, confusion, lessons we all need to learn, and faith.

Yes, I did just want to share those and had no other excuse!

What Does It Take to Assemble a Blog Tour?

I’ve been complimented a lot on how much work I’ve been doing lately what with the multiple blog tours running – one being my own!

And though I appreciate the encouragement – it is encouraging, indeed! – it doesn’t feel … merited to me? A lot of the things I do are automatic.

But for you up-and-coming authors to whom blog tour hosting looks like an impossible chore, let me give you a quick run-down of an author’s duties while setting up and running a blog tour!

Okay, let me answer a few FAQ:

What is a blog tour?

A blog tour is like an online book tour. A group of bloggers agree to post about your book on set dates.

It’s a great way to get word about your new book out into the world! Also, it’s fun.

What sorts of things do bloggers post during a blog tour?

Author interviews, reviews, book spotlights … I also do guest posts, guest posts written by my characters, and interviews with my characters!

How long should my blog tour be?

I’ve seen everything from three days to a month! My favorite length is a week. However, it’s up to you!

Now, without further ado, here’s what I do to put together a blog tour. (I’m using Beyond Her Calling‘s tour as an example in this case).

#1: Put together a sign up form and advertise it.

Here‘s an example of a basic signup form.

Mine for Beyond Her Calling was a bit more complicated, but the link above should give you a basic idea.

Timeline: I got the signup form for Beyond Her Calling up on September 28th. I left them open until the 8th myself.

#2: Put together a media kit.

I’m not going to share a media kit here, but here’s what it should include (at least):

In a document (preferably Google Docs), you should have:

The blog tour schedule.
The book blurb.
Book links (Amazon, Goodreads).
The author bio.
Author links (blog, website, social media).
Giveaway info (what the giveaway is for, link, and HTML).

Attached to the email or in a Google Docs folder, you should have:

The book cover.
Author image.
Promotional graphics (you should have at least one blog tour graphic).
Book quotes (optional but cool).

Timeline: I got the media kit put together and sent out by the 13th (yesterday). At least a week before the blog tour begins in preferable.

For reviewers, get the ARC sent out as soon as you can. Mine didn’t get out until the 11th because I was running behind schedule. I would have liked to send it out the weekend before, though.

#3: Lots and lots of interview questions.

This is honestly what I spend 99% of my time doing these days? That and writing guest posts, of course, since I offer that.

Be sure to proofread, don’t feel a need to be wise, and you’ll be fine.

Their mocha-skinned love child, Lilly, is banished to Savannah, longing to know her birth story. Soon Lilly falls prey to Baroness Genevieve, wearer of the mysterious Bloodstone Ring.

A Note from Kell: Ooh, End Times! Am I the only one who enjoys learning about Revelation and what all it could mean, etc.?

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Throughout history, blood moons have always been surrounded by persecution and provision, great trials and triumphs. The first set of blood moons in 1493-1494 provided a new world for the Jewish people. The second gave them Israel in 1949-1950, and the third presented them Jerusalem in 1967-1968. Now a fourth set of blood moons is on the horizon, and young Jewish lawyer Tassie’s mother is certain they will bring about great change.

Tassie, named for a lost religious relic, has her sights set on her career and love, and she doesn’t believe in silly children’s stories. Dismissing the blood moons as just circumstance, her unbelief threatens to keep her from her destiny. When Tassie finds herself in the center of worldwide turmoil and a terrorist plot, can she accept her family history and fulfill her place in the future of Israel? Or will the country of her heritage finally fall to its many enemies?

Beyond Her Calling, a Christian historical romance, is launching October 20th with a blog tour! The tour will run October 20th through October 27th, and we’d love to have you participate!

Though this novel is a part of a series, it can function as a standalone.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

At twenty, Ivy Knight feels as if she hasn’t accomplished anything of worth. Her life stretches on before her, empty and pointless. Though her faith in God and her mental abilities have been strengthened, she still doubts herself. Does God have a purpose for a socially awkward, often confused and frightened young woman?

Jordy McAllen has just returned to Scotland after his education in London. Though he has accomplished a lot for a farm lad such as himself, he fears that what everyone has always said about him may be true: he won’t really make a good doctor. Determined to prove himself, Jordy snatches up the opportunity to become the doctor in the village of Keefmore near his parents’ farm.

Helping Jordy with his work at Keefmore seems like the perfect opportunity for Ivy. Still, she doubts herself. Is there a purpose to Ivy’s life?
