Dear Christian Girls: Don’t Wait!

All over the internet, there are articles and articles about being patient during “a season of waiting.” Waiting … waiting for what?

Not all of the articles are necessary geared this way, but they all have the same undertone – waiting for a husband.

And I take issue with that! I’ll get into the “why” in this post.

It’s not that I have a thing against marriage. I mean, gosh, a lot of the people I respect most were/are married.

A Most Noble Heir by Susan Anne Mason {Review}

Hello ladies and gents! It’s been ages since I posted a review, but now I’ve decided it’s time for me to catch up.

For the next two weeks, I’ll be posting a review (or mini review post) fairly often. I’m also working on updating my Goodreads shelves, getting reviews updated, etc. It won’t be every posting day, but if you see a lot of reviews, that’s why!

Today’s review is of A Most Noble Heir by Susan Anne Mason! Hope you enjoy it.

A Most Noble Heir by Susan Anne Mason

35138329

Will gaining the world cost him everything he holds most dear?

When stable hand Nolan Price learns from his dying mother that he is actually the son of the Earl of Stainsby, his plans for a future with kitchen maid Hannah Burnham are shattered. Once he is officially acknowledged as the earl’s heir, Nolan will be forbidden to marry beneath his station.

Unwilling to give up the girl he loves, he devises a plan to elope–believing that once their marriage is sanctioned by God, Lord Stainsby will be forced to accept their union. However, as Nolan struggles to learn the ways of the aristocracy, he finds himself caught between his dreams for tomorrow and his father’s demanding expectations.

Forces work to keep the couple apart at every turn, and a solution to remain together seems further and further away. With Nolan’s new life pulling him irrevocably away from Hannah, it seems only a miracle will bring them back together.

First thoughts on seeing the cover: HORSES! But what is that creepy little man doing on the cover?

The Grinch and the Ghost of Christmas Past

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch

You really are a heel

You’re as cuddly as a cactus, you’re as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch

You’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

I grew up on “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”* Every Christmas, I’d stare at the TV screen, giggling and grinning – and of course we’d read the book, too!

I’ve gotten to the point where I can recite the movie/book start to finish – which is why I was hesitant to go watch the version that released this year (2018), simply titled “The Grinch.”

But I was surprised by how much I liked the new version – as a movie completely separate from the original, of course.

Seek by Angela R. Watts {Blog Tour}

Hello ladies and gents! Time for a review of a lovely book (which I was both the cover designer and formatter for!) by my co-manager of Reveries Co. and darling sister in Christ, Angela R. Watts!

This book is close to my heart partially due to my involvement in the final stages and partially because of the author, but it’s also a dynamite story of faith, adventure, good, and evil!

So settle in for a review of Seek by Angela R. Watts! Hope you enjoy it. (Stay tuned for the giveaway, too!)

FTC Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

Seek by Angela R. Watts

SEEK COVER GOOD

Angel Cutler’s routine life is overturned when local ganglord Viktor Marino tries to kidnap her. When she finds out her adopted sister is back in town and working with Viktor, Angel has to run away with the protection of two total strangers. Can Angel have faith in God to protect her family when she can’t?

Elijah Davis has seen Viktor bleed once, and to save his family, he’ll make it happen again. But who is the One Eli can turn to when he realizes he can’t protect his loved ones alone?

Hiding from gangsters and gunfire, the trio struggle to seek God above all else and trust that His plan is greater than their own. Or Viktor Marino’s.

AMAZON (KINDLE!) | GOODREADS

Seek by Angela R. Watts is an adventure story, but it has a lot of elements of a psychological thriller.

The characters were amazing! They were all quite well-developed and defined. It was easy to tell them apart, and they felt like real people.

I’m not sure if I liked Asher or Eli better. They both have their pros and cons.

Asher is funny and amusing and sweet. He’s sort of the comedy relief of the group, but he’s also the BEST BROTHER to Eli, and their relationship is fantastic.

(Asher/Angel’s relationship is great, ’cause he’s got to be her brother now, but yeah, that doesn’t get to show up as much ’cause they just met.)

And, of course, Eli is the “romantic interest,” while Asher is a friend, which gives him a bit of an edge later on.

I’m Back {A Bunch of Updates}

Well. I’m back! And now it’s time for me to tell you about all the stuff I’ve been doing in the last month, etc. So if you’re not a fan of rambly updates, be gone.

(I’m just kidding; stick around, anyway. I’ll try to make this not-rambly. Though it’s painful, you know. Like ripping apart my soul …)

So, here’s the thing. I … actually was productive? Oh, don’t act so surprised. I can be productive when I want to be productive! (which is rarely, but you know, that’s besides the point!)

Now, let’s start with the most important … well, I don’t know that it’s the most important, but it’s certainly very important to me, which should be enough for you.

And Then Life Changed

Last Sunday the 28th, my grandpa James Clark McCall died. So of course I didn’t do a post Monday … or the rest of the week. I’ve been dropping commitments left and right over this, actually!

This is basically going to be a short post in memory of my grandpa, who played an important central roll in my life, and a way for me to talk about the future.

So, let’s just get on with it!

A bit about him:

James “Jim” Clark McCall, 72, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home on Sunday, October 28th, 2018. Jim was born December 12th, 1945 in The Dalles, Oregon, the youngest of three children to Clayton and Marie (Olson) McCall. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1963 and Oregon State University in 1968. He married Nancy Lyn Roth on September 26th, 1964. Jim worked in the banking industry, first for Wells Fargo Bank then Columbia River Bank. He finished his career with Columbia State Bank, retiring in 2013. He enjoyed spending time with his family, a good joke, camping with Nancy, family, and friends, bird watching, and taking care of his cows and dogs, but his delight was in the Lord, and he meditated on Him day and night.

His survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of fifty-four years, Nancy Roth McCall; three children and their spouses, Tawny and Rob Garrett, Jeff and Cheri McCall, and Matt and Tammy McCall; eleven grandchildren and spouses, Heidi (Garrett) and Matt Burke, Benjamin Garrett, Robin (Garrett) and Josh Ott, Nikki (McCall) and Shay Ellison, Nolan McCall, Kyle McCall, Alex McCall, Brooke McCall, Kelly Garrett, James Garrett, and Thaddeus Garrett; six great-grandchildren: Coryn, Holly, Mercy, Claire, Lincoln, and Elijah; his brother and sister, Robert and Toni McCall of Portland, Oregon; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his adopted sons, Darrell Sharp and Dan Marsh.

So yep, there are still a lot of us left now that Grandpa is gone, and it’s kinda scary!

(All but one of his grandkids are pictured above.)

I’m so grateful to my grandpa for his caring nature, his wisdom, his jokes, our camping trips, our special nicknames, and all the fantastic memories.

He was probably the most important man in my life. We were closer than close. My grandparents and I were inseparable; we were a dynamic trio!

I don’t think a lot of people understand just how close I was to my grandparents. I can literally see their house from where I’m sitting typing this blog post in my living room.

They were a second set of parents and my best friends for many years. I loved them both very much – and I continue to love my grandma (who, by the way, has been incredibly strong in the face of this trial).

From the time I was two years old, I was going on two-week camping trips with them. When other grandkids were scared to spend the night or be away from their parents for long periods of time, I wanted to go with them more than anything in the world.

I’d sob when my mother came to get me or hide in the back of their pickup in hopes that they wouldn’t make me leave.

They have loved me, amused me, cheered me up, kept me from going insane, helped me go crazy (in the best way), made me endlessly faithful to my family, given me a love for so many different things (music, movies, animals).

My grandpa especially taught me that quiet is sometimes better, that you can be strong and silent, that sometimes it’s better to pull than to push, and that gentleness wins over brute strength.

But – thankfully – Grandpa and I (as well as most of the rest of my family) are Christians – so we will meet again.

For that reason, I’m on hiatus for a time. I don’t know when I’ll be back. Could be sooner, could be later.

But I will be back. You’d better believe it! I wouldn’t give up blogging for the world. Y’all just gotta be patient.

A few quick updates:

As of today (Friday), I’ve reached 35,000 words in Souls Astray.

Yes, 35K in nine days! I’m going to 100K for the month.

Reveries Co. is officially launched.

Be sure to check it out!

I’ll probably be posting more on social media.

So yep, if you want to talk or whatever, that’s where to reach me.
I’ll also answer comments here.

Beyond Her Calling, Blog Tour: Day 5

Hello. If you must, welcome to the fourth day of the Beyond Her Calling blog tour. I’m Violet Angel. I don’t want to be here.

I’m trying to get this over as quickly as possible, but it’s not coming to me. However, I don’t much care if it’s a terrible post. So there.

Let’s just get on with it. I’m not in the mood for long introductions.

Guest Post // Germaine Han @ The Writing Mafia

Coming soon. I suppose.

Review // Jana T. @ Reviews from the Stacks

I actually enjoyed the latter part of this post, despite being forced to read it upon threat of being rewritten as a clown. A quote:

The one minor aspect I did have trouble with is that it can seem that Ivy finds her “calling” in a romance, which concerns me.

That concerns me, too. What is this obsession with romance? I love it in stories, but it’s no earthly good in the real world – in fact, it only seems to lead to heartbreak.

Furthermore, if you find your worth in another person – well, goodness. I’ve been told not to do that more time than I can count. God comes before people, always. (Look, I can say it even if I don’t live it.)

Further quote:

My concern is that some readers, especially younger girls, might read this and think that in order to find a reason for their life they need to find a husband, which is not true.

Just because other people might want to read that not because I care about little girls. *shrugs*

Anyway, I think Miss Roth would have more to say about this … BUT IT ISN’T HER BLOG POST, SO SHE CAN’T, NOW, CAN SHE? Haha! For once I have the last laugh …

Violet Angel Day!

Let’s just start with some about me things. I’ll just say what Miss Roth said as that is easier.

Bio:

Violet Angel is a young lady from London, but she’s been cared for at McCale House, a boarding school for “simpletons” in Scotland, since she was three years old. Violet loves being sarcastic, music, reading, subtly teasing Ivy, pondering deep philosophical topics, and pouting in her bedroom. She’s a minor character in Ivy Introspective and Beyond Her Calling.

Fun Info About Violet:

Full Name: Violet Millicent Angel

Birthdate: February 13th, 1860 (age 20 during Beyond Her Calling)

Personality Type: INTP

Personality Info:

It can be difficult to say exactly what is Violet and what is her problems, but it is safe to say that she’s sarcastic, slightly pessimistic, and generally rational unless she’s having one of her nightmares or episodes when she becomes overly emotional and paranoid. Violet loves thinking about theoretical problems and delving into theology of all types.

Appearance:

Violet has long dark hair, almost translucent pale skin, and big blue eyes.

Background:

Violet was born in London. When she was three years old, her nightmares and anxiety issues led her parents to place her at McCale House. Being abandoned by her parents only made her worse, of course. #goodjobAngels

Violet struggles with suicidal thoughts, and Ivy has led her away from a literal cliff as well as several mental ones in the past. For this reason, and because Ivy is so innocent and friendly, they have been fast friends since they were twelve and fourteen respectably.

Family:

Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Angel, Dorothea “Dorry” (younger sister by two years), and presumably some other little siblings

Random Facts:

Violet has bipolar syndrome (mild), nightmares inspired by her past, and is just generally scarred by her parents abandoning her as a three-year-old.
The author believes Violet would do a lot better in the modern-day world, and would probably be deemed a normal (though still quite sarcastic) person, but unfortunately that is not to be.
EXCLUSIVE INFO: Violet is actually an heiress to quite a large sum of money. Can’t wait to see that unfold in book 6.
