Freedom from the Pressure to Be Every Woman
Women are indeed strong and capable—able to meet needs, please others, overcome obstacles, raise children, run businesses, and look good doing it.
However, on the road to prove ourselves, I am afraid we’ve adopted an unhealthy mindset along the way.
When I act like I must be all things to all people, I overextend myself as a human being, and set myself up for failure and others for disappointment.
When we take on more than is reasonable, we exchange my strength for stress, and peace of mind...

Is Perfectionism Choking Your Creativity?
I used to wear perfection like an honor cord at graduation (with a glossy golden sheen) until I realized it was choking my creativity.
There is not enough time in the day or fuel in the tank to demand perfection from myself or those around me. It’s perfectly impractical. A relentless motor and inner drive push me to perform flawlessly at breakneck speeds, but if I keep this pace, I’ll breakdown.
Being a writer, speaker, wife, and mother of five, requires creative contortions on a regular bas...

Take a Running Leap of Faith Even If Your Hands are Shaking
My daughter and I attended a gymnastics meet at the local university. We were mesmerized as the athletes leaped over the vault, spun around the uneven bars, and soared through the air during their floor exercises.
The coach gave each gymnast a pep talk before their routine. I imagine that he reminded them to focus, breathe deep, and remember their training. They ended with a fist bump and a “You’ve got this.”
As I watched one of the athletes get ready for her event I noticed that her hands w...

Interview with Teri Lynne Underwood (Author of Praying for Girls)
The Interview Series continues with Teri Lynne Underwood, author of the book, Praying for Girls: Asking God for the Things They Need Most.
You may remember Teri Lynne from the Grounded Series that my daughter Brooke and I hosted. She wrote a beautiful reminder to tween girls.
Let’s learn more about Praying for Girls below and then let’s do just that!
If I’m honest, I feel stuck on what to pray for my daughters at times. I don’t want my prayers to be selfi...

When She Speaks, Her Words are Wise
She Speaks Conference Reflections Three years ago I attended the She Speaks Conference. I was insecure, filled with great anticipation, and felt kind of lost in a sea of well-dressed women. It was near the beginning of my writing journey and I had great hopes for how my publishing appointments would turn out. I longed to be known and to have my writing validated by experts.
My roommate Lee prayed with me before my meetings as I carried my heart on paper—in the form of a book proposal.
My tim...

One of my favorite aspects of the Speak Up Conference!
Clockwise: Meet Patty (brave and beautiful), read sweet note from my daughter, Shelly (with an amazing dream for children), Laurie (MOPS Mentor Mom in Auburn Hills), and of course the woman who started it all Carol Kent, Carissa Yoder (a smile that lights up the room), my Life Coach Darlene of heartswithapurpose.com, Cindy Bultema (gave an outstanding talk about unity) and Gretchen Fleming! This post is part of the Speak Up Blog Hop, hosted by Cindy Bultema. Checkout the posts below to learn...

Interview with Carey Scott (Author of “Uncommon”)
Welcome back to the Interview Series!
Summer is a great time to read. Now that my manuscript is turned in, I have a little time to tackle my summer reading list. Today we’re featuring a new book from my wonderful friend, Carey Scott.
1. Who is one of your favorite uncommon women from the Bible and why?
There are too many to choose from! If I had to narrow it down to one, I’d say Eve. I think she is one of the most compelling characters in the Bible. I cannot wait to sit down in heaven and h...

Hope that Doesn’t Dissolve, Trust that Doesn’t Wane
Dear Daughter of the King: It is true that hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12). When your hopes are delayed, deterred, or detoured, you are left with emptiness. Like a stomach that just heaved, you feel hollow; left with a bitter taste in your mouth.
But, when your longings are fulfilled, you are satisfied, like partaking in a delicious, savory meal with loved ones gathered ’round the table and laughter filling the air.
Dreams may come and go, morph and change, but my Hope is...
