a little writing, a little painting
A couple of people asked me yesterday, “What have you been doing?” Okay, really, no one has asked me that, but maybe someone has been wonderingbecause I haven’t blogged for several days. Several days is a long time for me. So here’s what I’ve been doing—I’ve been writing plenty. I’m workingon something new. And, not to jinx myself, I like the way it’s going so far.
In keeping with my “do something creative everyday” motto, last night I went with my creative friend, Laurie (See Laurie Write &...

I’m writing in the woods
Five years ago if someone asked me where I’d be today, I don’t know what I would have said. But I wouldn’t have saidwriting in the woods. TheWriters’ Colony atDairy Hollowmight have been my answer ifI played a game ofeenie-meenie-miney-moe with multiple choice answers. In my mind, any place with “colony” attached to it was highly sketchy. Acolony involved hippie living, potgrowing, andKum Ba Yah singing.
Or lepers.
Lepers lived in colonies, didn’t they?
As a kid, I thoughtthe Mississippi County...

Fried Patty Pan Squash
I swear I don’t fry very often, but it may seem like I do since I recently reposted myfried green tomato recipe on Facebook, and now THIS… Fried Patty Pan Squash.
I made fried patty pan squash for lunch yesterday because a) well, I had some, and b) who doesn’t love fried squash?
If you don’t, don’t tell me…
Momma always fried squash, okra, and eggplant (not together), but her squashwas of the yellow crookneck variety. Gracie Lee planted patty pan squash seeds because she thought the spaceshi...

It’s a Tarzan thing.
It’s true. I have a thing for Tarzan. We go way back. As a kid I never missed a Saturday afternoon Tarzan movie, especially when Johnny Weissmuller played the part. He was legit . A hero. A survivor. He was one withthe jungle and rode an elephant like nobody’s business.
I wanted to be Jane. I wanted to live in a treehouse and do the yell and fill out a loincloth dress and have a chimpanzee friend and nevergo to school ever again.
But that didn’t happen.
What did happen was this… In the back of...

Shout out to plants growing in solid rock!

A tree grows in Oregon.
How about a shout out to all those plants growing in solidrock? They grow with such tenacity and flourish without effort. Seeds slipping into cracks. Tender roots squeezing through boulders, concrete, asphalt, sheer cliffs, sidewalks.
A miracle, really.

Lake Norfork, Ar.
Growing naturally, enthusiastically.

Lake Norfork, Ar.
And I can breathe better because of it. Can’t you?

Thank you Mother Nature.

Things I Found in Florida
Yes, I’m still blogging about my recent road trip, and today I’m thinking about the things I found in Florida. Cool things. Abstract ideas. Simple stuff.
Like what?
Like after all these years, I discovered exactly where she sells seashells bythe seashore. the S. S. Minnow. that I don’t care forboiled peanuts.I know, I know, they’re a southern thing, but it was my first time to eat them, andthey aren’t for me… Messy and soggy and oh well. It takes way more than this torevoke my southern...July 11, 2016
Fifty-four things I know so far.
I’m grateful to be celebrating another birthday at the lake with family. After fifty-four trips around the sun, I should knowa few things. Maybe? So while sitting on the porchdrinking coffee, I jotted down a quick list of fifty-four things I’ve learned so far.
Less is more. Be yourself. Celebrate tradition. Wear sunscreen. Laughter really is the best medicine. Simple is good. Eat your veggies. Negativity breeds negativity. It’s true, time flies. Not everyone will like you. Plant flowers. Sm...July 8, 2016
A different shade of dark.
Do you remember how you felton September 11? I do.Afraid. Panicked. Sad. Worried for my children. I literally expected the sky to fall around me. BUT, the Dallas sniper attack on Thursday night represents a different shade of dark. It feels like theworst sort of bad.
To me, when Americans attack Americans on American soil, we’ve reached bottom.
And the attack was on our protectors.
During the events of September 11, wepulled together as a country. We were proud and united and One. Today, as...

Summer Reads in our Little Free Library!
Hey Northwest Arkansas! Our Little Free Library is stocked with great summer reads. Yesterday, John and I spent some time browsing (and buying) at TrolleyLine Bookshopin Rogers, Arkansas. Trolley Line is a great little bookstore filled with so many treasures. And, since we were on a roll, we hit Dickson Street Books in Fayetteville on the way home.
So what makes a great summer read?
Brevity bordering on frivolity? Or something you can sink your heels into while you soak up the sun at the bea...

Happy Independence Day to you!
Happy Independence Day, America!
Did you know…?
Thirty-three-year-old Katherine Bates wrote America the Beautifulafter hikingto Pike’s Peak. “It was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, that the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind.” (biography.comvia Library of Congress)
Bates received $5 for the initial publication of her poem and released all future royalties.
After a visit to Coney Isla...
