My VERY Hungry Caterpillars

Check out my VERY hungry monarch caterpillars!

Do you remember the children’s picture book by Eric Carle titled The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Well, I have my own very hungry caterpillars, and they are so much fun to watch. Yes, I know they aren’t really “mine”, but I’ve been cultivating a butterfly garden since we moved here, and now that they’re here, I feel the need to observe and protectthem.

A couple of days ago, I spiedthe first chrysalis of the season. It’s attached to the rock wall beside the back gate only a yard or so from one o...

Wearing white after Labor Day. Is this still a thing???

White after Labor Day. Is it still a thing?

I’m no fashionista. This truth is self evident. Most of myjeans are ripped. My favorite shoes are Converse, preferably the ones that don’t require tying. So knowing this about me, why did I nearly panic this morning thinking that after today, Labor Day, I wouldn’t be able to wear my favorite white jeans for months?

Call me old school.

Or simply call me old. I realize I’m showing every single one of my southern-fried fifty-four years.

Labor Day, which became a federal holiday in 1894, marked...

September Eve and all it brings.

September Eve

Happy September Eve, everyone! I’m always happyto see August come to an end. Are you? Even though we’ll no doubthave more hot, humid days, there’s just something about flipping the calendar to September that makes me wanna dance. I also feel a little melancholy about the things I never got around to doing. That summer bucket list I wrote? Yeah, I didn’t tick off everything, but I suppose technically I still have time to do a few more things.

Do I dare do a fall bucket list?
Of course.
But no...

If Fall was a place…

yellow leaf

Fall hangsjust around the corner. I senseit in the breeze and especially in the shade when we walk Lucy and Annabelle. The leaves are beginning to change on the trees in Northwest Arkansas, and this makes me so-so-SOhappy.

If fall was a place, I’dlook forward to returning each year, excited to see familiar sights and inhalefamiliar smells. I’d sit on the back porch and drinkit in slowly with crushed ice and fresh lemon and mint from the garden.

If fall was adream, I’ll tumble into it every n...

my favorite things about baking…

my favorite things about baking

For most folks the end result of baking—the cake or pie or cookies—is the ultimateprize, but my favorite things about baking involve the details. Silly basic things youmay never have given a second thought.

You: What sort of things?

Me: Thanks for asking.

Things like…

reading old recipes ~ Old recipes come with smudged fingerprints and fuzzy memories and smells of past gone days withpeople who spent far greater time in the kitchen than I do.

three days in New York City

Sisters in NY

We just returned from a whirlwind three days in New York City, and by “we”I mean my sister, Staci, my niece, Taylor, and me. It was Taylor’s Sweet 16 birthday trip, and I’ve declaredfrom here on out, this is destined tobe an annual girls’ trip. Not necessarily to New York, but to somewhere.

Because travel is important. And family is important. And life is over in a New York minute. For real.

We hash-tagged it up with #TaylorisSweet16 and #SistersinNY which looked a little like “sister sin” ev...

Olympic Memories. Then and Now.

Olympic Memories

Our entirefamily waited for the Olympics to start, and we watched every night. Momma poppeda huge skillet ofpopcorn, slightly burned because that’s how Daddy liked it, and we ate in front of the television. Anothernight we had chocolate pudding in individual bowls because that was Daddy’sfavorite dessert.

A Romanian girlnamed Nadia Comanecidominated. We were the same age…

Oh, to be a perfect 10.

At anything.

“Why can’t y’all do that?” Daddy chuckled half teasing, half not. Nadia flipped and...

garden music all around

Garden Music!Yesterday an hour before sunset, Lucy, Annabelle and I went for anafternoon walk. The dreamy light provideda natural picture-taking filter, like garden music I could almost hear and definitely see. The Headquarters House is only one blockfrom our house. Filled with old-fashioned flowers and green space, we pretend it’s our own park and ignorethe thick, humid air this time of year.

It’s hard to believe aplacefilled with suchpeace and beauty was the site of the Battle of Fayetteville. The Headqu...

You know what’s fun? New mascara, book clubs, deodorant, Peyton Manning… I could go on.

Know what's fun?

You know what’s fun? Being invited to attend a book club when your own book is the book of the month.Know what’s even funner (besides saying funner)? Arriving the night before only to discover you left all your makeup at home. Cue sarcasm. First world problem, I know, I know, but still…

Here’s the thing. Once you start wearing makeup in the ninth grade, it becomes a slight addiction, a minorvice. There’s always that next pot of magical cream that will make you look a wee bit more youthful/tal...
