a world gone Lord of the Flies

It's a world gone Lord of the Flies

It’s a world gone Lord of the Flies. All I have to do is look outside my kitchen window to see it. In my garden (which has basically been unattended since my accident), the bully plants run amok. There’s been no one to reign them in, cut them back, pull them out by the roots, keep them in their place.

Bullies need stewards. They tend to be very Machiavellian.

The bullies in my backyard.

Mint, oh mint.

Mint is a big ole’ backyard bully. It has silenced my coreopsis, strangled my gaura. It wan...

Suffering from Nostalgia.

suffering from nostalgia
I’ve been suffering from nostalgia as of late.

And I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the end of summer—a summer I barely knew. Maybe it’s because back to school pics make me sentimental about my own kids and those crammed packed days that nearly choked the living daylights out of me, yet drifted by in the puff of a dream. Maybe the pain meds I’m taking make me all mushy, inside and out. Really and truly, I think it started with Glen Campbell. When I heard he died, I felt such loss. Glen Campbell...

Ten Ways to Celebrate Book Lovers Day!

10 Ways to Celebrate Book Lovers Day
Today is Book Lovers Day. There’s no way I can let such a day pass without proper celebration. If I think back over my life so far, books have been a constant source of entertainment and comfort. Reduce me down to my own common denominator, and you’d find I’m made of Delta soil, iced tea, and books. Probably.

I’m not sure how August 9 officially became Book Lovers Day, but here it is tightly wedged between Zucchini Day (yesterday) and Presidential Joke Day (tomorrow.) Not kidding. How best t...

The Art of Slowing Down

THE ART OF SLOWING DOWN

If there’s anything I’ve learned during the past two weeks, it’s that slowing down is an art form. I know everyone is tired of hearing about my broken bones. I get it. I’m tired of it, too. But this is my reality. And in the here and now, I’ve learned a few things about the art of slowing down.

For starters, it’s not natural. It goes against everything we know. Let’s face it, we are a list-making, multiple hat-wearing, get ‘er done people. BUT. There is NO multi-tasking with a broken wrist....

July Reads!!!

July Reads!!!

Hey everyone! With the turn of the calendar page, I’ve wrapped up my July reading. Say it with me: “So little time, so many books.” Right? I thought I might read waaayyy more in July because broken bones kept me rather house bound, but pain meds kept me rather conked me out. So I managed 7 books which seems to be my max during any given month. (I also made it most of the way through a chunk of a biography, but scanned the last third (dry as a bone!) and won’t include it here as that’s agains...

in the early garden

early morning in the garden / things the night owls miss

There’s a transparency in the early garden as fresh sunlight begins to filter down from Mount Sequoyah. Sweet air, clear thoughts, the dogs walk instead of sniff. O, the night-owls miss so much. I thank Daddy for my early-bird nature. And, Papa Creecy before him. Growing up in the Delta, I was surrounded by hard-working farmers who saw the sunrise every morning. It’s in my DNA. I bet if I do one of those ancestry tests, the early-bird farm girl slice of pie would be one of the largest pieces...

a rambling post about books and black knees

A rambling post…

THIS. This is something that will never get old as long as I live. Seeing my book on the shelf at Barnes & Noble. And I would never want that feeling to get old either. Know what I mean?

I feel the same way when I look out at the Ozark Mountains and think, I cannot believe I really, finally, truly, get to live here. I never want to forget how incredible the mountains look no matter the time of day, season, or weather. I don’t want to take this place I live for granted or see...

The Accidental Rotation of Talya Lea

The Accidental Rotation go Talya Lea

Have you heard about my new story? The Accidental Rotation of Talya Lea? Unfortunately it’s true. A memoir…

Tuesday night I fell while watering plants on the porch. Wet flip flops, rushing around. It was ugly. See the little picket fence in the next pic? That’s to keep Lucy and Annabelle on the porch. But instead of moving it out of my way, I stepped over, snagged my slippery flip flop, and dove five steps down to the bottom.

my porch

The coneflowers I’ve been bragging on and religiously nurturing?...

Amen to the Lusty Tomato

the lusty tomatoOne of my favorite things about summer? TOMATOES! There’s nothing like a fresh from the garden, sun-warmed, salt-sprinkled, juice-dripping-down-your-chin tomato. Can I get an Amen? When you grow your own or make a beeline for the farmers market and/or roadside fruit stand each week, you’ll soon learn the mealy, flavorless, faded-to-pink tomatoes at the grocery store are a pathetic substitute for the lusty heirloom.

A “real deal” tomato stirs up all the memories for me: eating them straight of...
