Savoring November + Thanksgiving Decor

savoring november

This year, I’m savoring November. On November 1, I began placing a few Thanksgiving decorations around so I can enjoy them all month. And I’ve been using my turkey dishes rather than pulling them down the day before Thanksgiving which is how it usually works.

There’s no rule against serving scrambled eggs on turkey dishes. Right?

This year, for whatever reason, I feel better organized, at least with my decor. And I cannot wait to have the whole family together. It’s been MONTHS since I’ve se...

the amazing grace of AUTUMN

the amazing grace of autumn

Oh my stars. The amazing grace of autumn is truly astounding. Here we are ankle deep in autumn, and I can’t get over the trees. I’m a new mother showing off pictures of her baby. I’m me showing off pictures of Lucy and Annabelle. Nothing whatsoever wrong with either scenario. Just a disclosure of what’s to come.

Pictures of trees.

And so here I go with a few of the pictures I took yesterday.

Filtered only by the grace of God.

Amazing grace for sure.

This is the block behind our house. The on...

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety Jig.

The view from our sleeping porch

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety Jig. I’m back home after spending five days with Momma and my sister, Staci, at home-home in Mississippi County, Arkansas. (I’ve said this before, but home-home is where I’m from, and home [singular] is where I live now.)

When we were kids, Momma always said, “Home again, home again, jiggety jig,” every time we pulling into the carport. After a trip to the lake. After a trip to Big Star. After a trip anywhere.

You remember that nursery rhyme, don’t you? There...

October Book Reviews

October Book Reviews

Happy Halloween! Today marks the end of another month. Are you ready for my October Book Reviews?

Three of the books I read in October (Mariette in Ecstasy, The Namesake, and The Virgin Suicides) were part of a five-week Survey of Fiction class I attended through OLLI at University of ArkansasOkiehomeland was my book club’s official October selection. I listened to Young Jane Young via Hoopla and chose it mainly because of the cover. (Sometimes my choices are as simple as that.)

These book...

Our House at Halloween

I realized something this week. Decorating for Halloween is rather easy when I typically surround myself with antique, tattered, old things. Our house at Halloween is, well, not a far stretch from normal.

I’m not sure what that says about John and me.

Yes, we’re having a party on Saturday. I thought I’d give you a sneak peek inside our house at Halloween. I like to mix specific decorations I’ve picked up through the years with my usual decor. This plays right along into the spooky theme when...

Book Two and a World of Distractions

Book Two & distractions

I thought I should let y’all know I haven’t died. It’s been a week since I blogged which is a long time for me. Here’s the thing. I’ve been working on Book Two. And doing other things. Other things in the life of a writer are also known as writing distractions.

Distractions come is all sorts of packaging with a variety of labels. Like wasting time on Facebook. Watching The Voice. Enjoying a long lunch at a restaurant instead of eating a quick sandwich at home. I’m not knocking distractions....

the Halloween Garden

The Halloween Garden

Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. I love the nostalgia of it and dressing in a costume. Halloween provides the perfect excuse to eat a handful of sugary candy I don’t otherwise eat. My silver service on the sideboard looks appropriately dark and moody in its currently tarnished state. Even the yard gets in on the spirit of the season, which brings me to the Halloween garden. Maybe it’s simply my perspective come October, but flowers and plants take on a heavy, sleepy, Halloween-...

My Ode to the Hot Dog Roast

hot dog roast

Today I’m honoring the hot dog roast, a simple slice of americana that reminds me of lake days and baseball and a summer already behind us. I know, I know, hot dogs are the opposite of healthy, and vegetarians probably gag at the thought of them. I only eat two or three (okay five or six) a year, so no doubt I have worse habits I could / should / do fret over from time to time. But this is me trying to keep things light over here in my Grace Grits and Gardening world.

Personally, I think we...

Books I Read in September.

The books I read in September

Happy October, friends! The books I read in September represented a variety of genres, settings, and themes. I lapped them up for completely different reasons. Grab a cup of coffee and journey with me to the plains of Nebraska, down south to Louisiana, and across Texas when it was wilder than it is today (joke). We’ll delve into the mastermind behind of Nancy Drew, visit with the quirky Glass family, and meet a dying man in England. And, if you dare, we’ll step foot inside North Korea, a pla...
