Interlude with a Sleepy Little Moth

A Polyphemus Moth Came to VisitA few days ago, a sleepy little moth hitched a ride on John’s tennis shoe and came home with us after our morning walk. Actually, he wasn’t all that little. At first, he looked like a brittle brown leaf. Then, a butterfly? When I got a closer look, I knew he was a moth of some sort.

He clung there, exhausted.

We moved him onto the back of our wicker sofa on the porch. He fully spread his wings as though wanting to make sure we noticed his incredible markings.

So lethargic. I thought he was in...

Sunday Letter: 07.22.18

Sunday Letter 07.22.18

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

This past week was a mixed bag for me. A mix of moods, productivity, weather, everlittlethang. Maybe it all goes back to the rollercoaster I blogged about HERE. Or the excessive heat! I happen to believe when the temperature soars over 100 degrees, all rational bets are cancelled. No one can be held accountable for feeling wholly uninspired during extreme conditions. This morning, our temperature is only 67 degrees! Just like that, the heat spell has broken. At le...

on being an author… keeping it real today

On being an author - keeping it real.
I’m two-and-a-half years into this author gig. At times, this new journey has been fantastic, at times nerve-wracking. Always it’s surreal. Opening myself up to feedback and criticism and whatever comes next (or doesn’t come at all) can be exhilarating and scary, sometimes within ten minutes.

Nearly every day someone asks me for advice. What’s it really like? Do you make any money? I’m always willing to share the tablespoon of knowledge I’ve collected. Today, I’m keeping it real, bringing yo...

Sunday Letter: 07.15.18

Sunday Letter 07.15.18

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

Welcome to the backside of July. As we slip-slide into the dog days of summer, I find myself looking toward fall. Once 4th of July is over and my birthday comes and goes, the rest of summer feels like Side B of a record I was just dying to have.

Remember Side B?

We saved our money and begged our Mommas to drive us to town so we could hand over a few waded up paper bills. Then for the rest of the summer we played Side A over and over until we memorized all the lyri...

Sunday Letter 07.08.18

Dear Sunday Letter Peeps,

We are having the craziest summer here in Northwest Arkansas. Our temperature this morning is 69 degrees! I’m savoring every pleasant breeze and every crack of thunder. This past week we had two days of unexpected rain showers, too. All the critters and plants are standing taller and smiling brighter this morning.

4th of July: gentle on my mind

4th of July

Before we went to the lake for the 4th of July, we drove over to a fireworks stand near Luxora to buy a sackful of Roman candles, bottle rockets, stink bombs, and Black Cats. We carried them with us like luggage, as though we couldn’t buy sparklers in Mountain Home.

How the whole bag didn’t combust when we stopped for butterscotch malts in Lake City was a great mystery to me. In the time it took the Tastee Freeze waitress to whip up our orders and slide them through the window, Momma’s car m...

Sunday Letter 07.01.18

Dear Sunday Letter friends,
The way I see it, part of my responsibility is to remind you of the date. When time passes as fast as ice cream melts, it’s easy to think we’re still hanging out in April. But today is the first day of July. Hang on. As of today, we’re officially sliding down the backside of 2018. Baseball is behind us (Hogs had an amazing season!), and for the foreseeable future, there’s nothing ahead but burning pavement.

July!

Yep. July is here in all her sunny, sticky, hot as...

Book Reviews: June 2018

June 2018 Book Reviews Book Reviews June 2018:

I can’t believe June is over! I did lots of traveling in June which means a couple of these books were audio versions. Also, I went to the lake. I always read 2-3 books (sometimes 4) at the lake. Did you watch The Great American Read a few weeks ago on PBS? Because of that fantastic show, I am determined to read more of the 100 most recommended books on the PBS list  (i.e. A Confederacy of Dunces).

Sunday Postcard: 06.24.18

Sunday Postcard

Today I’m sending a Sunday Postcard instead of a letter. I just got home from a week at the lake, and I’m not organized enough to write a letter. Still, I wanted to say hi.

Postcards are a fun way to send greetings, a small slice of travel delivered to someone’s mailbox.

When I was a kid, I loved to send postcards to friends when I was away on summer vacation. Or I sent them back home to my parents and little sister from camp.

Did you?

There wasn’t much room on the card to write all my excit...
