Monday Movie Madness: Treasure of Ruby Hills

Hello Posse!
I hope you all had a wonderful, safe, happy, and health weekend! We had a quiet time at home, as usual. I have been moderating my two groups on Facebook and now I'm helping to moderate another four. I'm still tutoring a few ESL students each week and I am about to start work on part five of my serial, Into the West: Family Ties. Nothing like keeping yourself overextended to keep your mind off of current events, am I right?
Another great distraction is good movies! Today we have another movie based on a story by Louis L'Amour, Treasure of Ruby Hills. The original story The Rider of the Ruby Hills was released under the pen-name, Jim Mayo. In 1976, the story was added to and rereleased as Where the Long Grass Blows.
This movie is a little bit different from the other movies I have shared with you. This is the first movie I have not personally seen at some point in my life. This movie was suggest by my good friend Pete Wellenstein. If you read my books I am going to bet you recognize that name. He is the friend I named Doc Pete after. Pete gave me a huge list from his own personal movie library to keep me in western movie blogs for a few years. Thanks Pete!
The Treasure of Ruby Hills was released in black and white in 1955 by Allied Artists. It starred
,This film takes place in 1877. Wealthy men, Chalk Reynolds and Walt Payne, come into Ruby Hills Valley and begin to take over all the small landowners and ranchers. Reynolds and Payne, have their henchmen kill anyone who challenges their supremacy in the area. Thing become more complicated with the arrival of Ross Hayne. Hayne just happened to acquire a section of land that has the only source of water in the valley. Reynolds sends a henchmen to take care of the situation. The henchman makes a big mistake when he kills Hayne's partner.
,Hayne's goes to Ruby Hills seeking revenge and learns there is another player looking to make a land grab in the area, Alan Doran. Hayne has to takes them all on in an all out fight for control over the land and water.

Friday Funnies: National Tattoo Day (Mistakes)

(Photo is not me. Just a great tattoo of the Burckhardt family crest)
Hello Posse!
Today is national tattoo day! I do not know about how you all feel about tattoos but I will admit that I have two. One is on the back of my skull next to my brain surgery scars. I had the Cherokee word for healthy tattooed there sort of as a talisman to help keep me from needing more brain surgeries (6 is more than enough). The other one I call my life/death tattoo. It is a watercolor design because watercolors are messy and so is life. It holds a lot of symbolism for me about how I view human existence.
Today, I thought since I always do funnies for Friday, I thought it would be fun to check out some tattoo mistakes. Actually, the first tattoo I got of the Cherokee word ended up being spelled wrong the first time. My cousin had just opened a tattoo parlor and offered to give me and my mother free tattoos if she could practice on us. She had been doing tattoos for a while and she had done some great work so we weren't worried about her skills.
I told her what I wanted but that I would need to look up how to spell it because my Cherokee language skills were not that good as I had just started learning the language. So she booted up her computer and we searched online. We found the word and she made the stencil and gave me the tattoo. However, we had read the wrong column and copied the phonetic spelling instead of the actual spelling, they were different by one letter. She easily fixed it for me and I joke about it all the time.
Luckily, I had chosen the Cherokee word that just had two letters. There is another word that means something similar but has, I think, 8 or 9 letters. Fixing one wrong letter was much easier.
Anyway, lets get on with the tattoo mishaps!
Enjoy,
Stephenhttps://youtu.be/-PMk_gQEPWIQ: Did you hear about the guy with the misspelled tattoo?
A: He says he has "No regerts".
Q: What kind of ink do politicians get?
A: Aristotats.
Q: What kind of tattoo tells you the temperature?
A: A Thermos-tat.
Q: Do people in Japan get tattoos of English words?
,Yesterday I went to a "temporary" tattoo parlour and got a tattoo.
,This morning it wouldn’t wash off, so I went back to complain but the tattoo parlour wasn’t there.
Men with neck tattoos used to make me nervous.
Now they make me lattes.
I was going bald and starting to lose confidence so I had a rabbit tattooed on my scalp.
People tell me, from a distance it looks like hare.

Whatever Wednesday: National Pet Fire Safety Day

Hello Posse!
I am sure most of you who follow my social media know my dog, Shaggy, is my baby! He goes to his regular check ups at the vet, gets good, healthy food, and gets plenty of exercise and, of course, love. ,Shaggy is my furbaby and I spoil him rotten. Part of spoiling him is making sure he is always safe.
,With today being National Pet Fire Safety Day, I thought I would share some tips from
,Check out a few of the tips from
Ways to keep dogs safe in the event of a fire:
Leave your dog’s collar on them all the time and put their leash near the door so first responders find them to lead pets to safety.
Consider confining your pets in rooms or areas near an entry door while you are away from home. this makes it easier for firefighters to find them. Pets are often injured or die in a fire when they are locked in their kennel or in room away from an exit.
Consider installing monitored smoke detectors. This way firefighters will be alerted and can respond to a fire even when you're away from home.
Make note of where your pets nap or hide in case you need to evacuate your home in an emergency.

I would like to add, it would be help to place stickers like the one here on or near the main doors of your home. This gives firefighters vital information that could help save your pets life.

Monday Movie Madness: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Hello Posse!
This has been a rough week. I am actually writing his on Saturday evening. I know this next week will be crazy and I do not want to have the blogs get lost in the mix again. I have really been doing better about writing the blogs since I went to the three times a week set up so I do not want to back track now.
This weeks movie is a true classic. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This movie was released in 1969 by 20th Century Fox. It is a classic American Western that was directed by Roy Hill. The script was written by William Goldman and was loosely based on the lives of Wild West outlaws Robert Parker and Harry Longabaugh, better known as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
This movie was selected in 2003 for ,United States
This movie stars screen legends, Paul Newman as Cassidy and Robert Redford as Sundance. The story follows the outlaws as the go on the run from a US posse seeking to bring them to justice after a string of train robberies. The pair escape to Bolivia with
,For a while, the bandits discuss going straight but when their first attempt at an honest job is foiled by robbers, they decide to return to thieving. Place is sure that if the pair start robbing again, they will end up dead and she leaves to return to the United States before that happens. Butch and Sundance decide to steal mules carrying a payroll and head to a local town with the animals in tow. The mules are recognized and the local authorities are alerted. The final shoot out is the thing of which legends are made.

Friday Funnies: Cat-tastrophies!

Hello Posse,
I know this is a little late today. I won't lie, it's been a rough day to end a rough week. The day started out great. While I was stressing a bit, because I had an eye doctors appointment today and I have not been out in "public" since the whole pandemic started in March. But I got a video call from a friend before I had to leave for the appointment. He really had me laughing and made my day so much better.
When I did leave to go to the doctor's appointment, I felt a little anxiety but it wasn't enough really bother me. I haven't been avoiding going out into public, I just haven't needed to go out for anything until now. I was thrilled to see everyone was wearing masks wherever we had to be inside with other people. Even groups of pre-teens and teens running around on their own were being responsible, wearing masks and social distancing. It was reassuring to know that I live in such a considerate neighborhood.
When we got home, I was reminded what is going on with my friends back in Kansas. Today, is the funeral for the mother of one of my best friends who I have known for 40 years. It is also the candlelight prayer vigil for the 18 year old son of another friend. I have known the boy since he was about 4 or 5. He was out with his friends and was struck by a drunk driver. His family and friends are praying for his recovery. If you are the praying sort, it would be wonderful if you could add these two families to your prayer lists. A lot of people are hurting right now.
It is at times like these that I often try to find things to bring a little joy to people. I know things like this silly blog do not make a dent in the problems going on in the world today, but if it gives anyone even a moments break from the stresses of their day, it's completely worth it.
So it's good that today's blog is the Friday funnies and I am kind of forced to look for anything humorous at the moment. I had planned for a while to share cat jokes today and thought the Cat-tastrophies title seemed really appropriate at the moment.
So here are a few jokes and a cute cat video to help you get into your weekend with at least a smile. I hope you and your loved ones are all safe, happy, and healthy.
Enjoy!

Whatever Wednesday: Updates
Hello Posse,
I know you are probably wondering what happened to this weeks Monday Movie Madness blog. Well, I got completely side tracked with other work and even forgot it was Monday. Where we live, we have actually been on work from home orders since March so the days really started to blend together about day 100 in this apartment. We do go out of course, but just for exercise and to pick up things that cannot be delivered.
Plus, two separate families we are very close to had devastating news this Sunday and I know I am still personally processing it all. Then Monday, there was a major collapse and rebuild of some online groups to which I belong. It was quite the drama and I was doing a lot of the rebuilding. In short, it's been a crazy few day but I'm getting things sorted out.
Given the stressful few day I have had, I thought it would be great to so something about de-stressing again today. I know I have hit on this subject before, but with the way the world is right now, I think it wouldn't hurt to throw this out once in a while. Virtua Health has some great simple tips on this with their online article
8. Immerse yourself in a creative outlet
I cannot tell you how much baking has helped me through some of these long boring days at home. I have taught myself how to make different breads including butter croissants, which were not as hard as I thought they would be, homemade Cheez It cracker knockoffs that are surprisingly addictive, and more. I have also been working on the craft of writing. These things have really helped my stress level.
9. Express your feelings
This ties into number eight for me. I have been writing a lot more and getting some of my stress out this way. Additionally, my husband and I have had a lot of in depth discussions about what is going on in the world right now. Having someone in your life who allows you to be open and honest is invaluable. It can be a friend, family member, or even a pet. Shaggy is a great listener!
10. Be in the moment with one of your senses
In my neighborhood, there are a lot of flower gardens along the street and so many birds it literally sounds like we live in an aviary. Whenever Shaggy and I go for a walk, I will often take a moment to just sit and listen to the birds. It is incredible. I also make a point to actually stop and smell the roses along the way. It really can make a huge difference in my sense of calm.
Another good thing is to laugh! Which is why I like sharing funnies on Fridays. I hope they make you laugh (at least a little) and drop some of the stress from your week so you can start your weekend off on a good foot.
With this in mind, I want to share a little "funny" with you now to help you get to Friday. Check out Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Guys Favorite Jokes on YouTube!
https://youtu.be/pmG0ZNEPYEYI promise the movie blog will be up next Monday with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and a recipe from Paul Newman for Cheesy Potato Skins for the movie snack suggestion. So, keep watching the blogs and have a great week!
Enjoy,

Friday Funnies: Summer Edition!

Hello Posse!
I hope everyone has had a great week and has had a chance to check out my new book release, ,Into the West: Most Wanted,. I just got my first review on Amazon and it was five stars! Now if I can get about 50 more of those I might actually get some attention for my books. In case you didn't know, it is available in paperback on
I don't know about you, but I miss going out to outdoor markets in the summer. My better half, P.R., and I would go every time one was in our neighborhood. Sadly, with the pandemic and so many people refusing to follow safer health precautions, I just can't take the chance going. For now, we are just enjoying each others company and BBQing when the weather allows. I hope you are all finding a way to still have fun and joy in your lives.
I think we could all use a moment or two of levity so . . . ON WITH THE JOKES (some of these are serious "Dad" Jokes! Actually most. To be honest, all of them are!)
Enjoy!

Whatever Wednesday: Short Stories

Hello Posse!
I know this is coming out late today (but at least it is still Wednesday) but in truth, I was having a difficult time finding anything I wanted to write about. I spent the day trying to find inspiration online and only found stress and aggravation. It seems like almost every social media platform is a mine field of bad news, conspiracy theorists, and just folks who are angry about everything under the sun.
I called my mom looking for ideas and she suggested giving you all part of one of the side stories that is available for a free download on the Members Only page on this site. I had never thought about that as I figured people already knew from the newsletters that there are free side stories available but apparently that is not well known. So that is what we are going to do.
For those who have read the books, you know some of the key characters have left the main storyline, Margret MacBride and Sonya Busby to be specific. Have you wondered what happen to them after the left the main story? Well, I actually wrote them their own short stories to explain more.
I'm going to share part of Sonya's side story with you here today. It is too long to put the whole thing in this blog but I will post a link to the rest of the story. You may have to join the Members Only page to read the rest, I am not sure yet how this will work as I haven't tried to link to that page before. But it is free to join and you can quit at any time, no strings attached. You control your membership.
I hope you enjoy Sonya's Home.

Ms. Walters woke early. It was the day before they were to leave for Sharon Springs and she was been feeling uneasy. She had been watching Sonya closely since she took over the girl’s care from Mrs. Kelly.
While she had not seen the girl doing anything truly disturbing, it was obvious something was just not right. In the past few days, Ms. Walters had noticed a change in her other charge, Barbara Master. She had always been a shy girl because of her pronounced limp, but she had always been cheerful until Sonya came to stay with them.
Barbara’s demeanor began to change after the girls’ first night together. Since then, Barbara had become more and more withdrawn and sullen. Whenever Sonya was near, Barbara seemed to try to become invisible. Ms. Walters had asked Barbara several times if there was anything going on between the girls she should know about but Barbara would not open up to her. She was obviously afraid of something . . . or more likely, someone.
Since she was up so early, Ms. Walters decided to go to the sitting room and check on the girls before finding her way to the outhouse. When the group had left St. Mark’s Foundling Hospital in New York City, there had been 57 children in their group who needed homes, now there were just the two girls left in her charge.
Ms. Walters lit the candle on her bedside table then bundled up in her heavy wool shawl; it was a very chilly morning. As she walked down the hall from her room, she decided to head to the kitchen first, a cup of tea would help her warm up before she braved the chilly morning air. She stoked the fire in the cast-iron stove and put a pot of water on to heat.
Ms. Walters looked out the window but it was still before dawn and she couldn’t see much of anything. If she was going to find the outhouse she would need an oil lamp, there was no way her candle would stay lit in the wind outside.
Ms. Walters had seen an oil lamp in the kitchen last night; looking around the room she did not see it here now. Maybe Mrs. Hewitt had taken it to bed with her. Ms. Walters remembered there was another one on the mantle over the fireplace in the sitting room where the girls were bedded down. She would go check on the girls and retrieve the other lamp.
Sonya’s Home, a companion short to the Into the West Saga Serial 2017 Members Only Free PDF Short Story - Property of StephenBurckhardt.com 3 Ms. Walters walked down the hall toward the sitting room. The door was slightly ajar and Ms. Walters could see a little light flickering from the fireplace inside. As she pushed the door open she was startled to see Sonya standing in the middle of the room.
As she took in the scene before her, Ms. Walters was shocked and felt the fear begin to rise in her chest. Sonya was standing in the center of the room staring down at Barbara while she slept. She was wearing her white night dress and was standing perfectly still just staring down at the other girl. In her hand, Sonya was holding a small log from the woodpile by the fireplace.
Ms. Walters was frozen in , she was afraid if she startled Sonya, she might do something unpredictable. Sonya began to swing slightly back and forth. She never looked up from Barbara as she spoke to Ms. Walters.
Sonya’s voice was calm as she said, “Have you ever wondered if how someone looks when they are asleep is how they will look when they are dead?”
Ms. Walters jumped. She wasn’t sure what startled her more, Sonya speaking so calmly as she asked such a disturbing question or the fact that it was coming from a young girl and asked in such a sweet sing-song voice. Both were chilling.
“I have never thought about that,” replied Ms. Walters. As she took a few more steps into the room, Sonya stopped swinging and gripped the log a little tighter. Ms. Walters stopped moving. She was afraid Sonya might do something to harm Barbara if she didn’t handle this situation correctly.
“Have you ever seen someone die?” asked Sonya. She didn’t wait for an answer before she continued. “I have. I watched my parents die. It took quite a long time. When they finally stopped moving, they didn’t look like they were sleeping. Their eyes were open and so red. Their mouths were open too and their tongues looked funny. There was blood all over their faces and coming out of their ears. They looked frozen …,” Sonya paused for a moment while she was lost in the memory. After a while, she seemed to stir from her thoughts and continued. “. . . and frightened. The way their mouths were open it was like they died trying to scream.”
Ms. Walters stood silently as Sonya painted a horrific picture of her last memories with her parents. It was no wonder this child was so disturbed.
I hope to have more companion shorts in the future.
Take care,

Monday Movie Madness: The Over The Hill Gang Rides Again!

Hello Posse!
I hope you all had a safe and wonderful weekend. We had a lovely cookout here at home yesterday. P.R. got a new toy for the grill and hung a whole chicken over the fire and slow roasted it all afternoon. Being a vegetarian, I rarely miss eating meat but once a while P.R. cooks something like that does tempt me. Besides, I think it makes P.R sad to have to cook my veggie hot dogs next to a meal prep like that. But that does just leave more for P.R. and Shaggy to enjoy.
I have been working on lots of little IT projects for the book serial that I had kept putting off while I was trying to get the last book finished. One of my projects is I am trying to make my websites multilingual as I am starting to get visitors to my site from other countries. I am also trying to break into the German market as American westerns are still somewhat popular there. The translation app does just use Google translation so it will not be perfect, but it will still make things better for my foreign visitors.
My page will also be available in Chilean Spanish. I chose this version of Spanish because so many of my friends and relatives speak it and I want them to be able to check out what I am doing. I have been trying to decide if I should add more languages. If you think I should offer something else, please let me know! I want my site to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible.
But for now, on with the show!
Today's flick is anther sequel, The Over the Hill Gang Rides Again! Last week, I introduced you to the made for TV movie The Over this Hill Gang and now I want to share the rest of the story with you.
This sequel is another made for TV movie that was featured as the movie of the week on ABC in 1970. This movie brought back several of the original cast members including
,As in the original movie, this film follows a band of older Texas Rangers who come together to right some wrongs and save the day. Once again, the story centers around retired Sergeant Nash Crawford (Brennan). He meets up with his friend Gentleman George Asque (Wills) just as he is about to get into a brawl with a man who was sore about losing too many hands of cards to the man. Crawford saves the day by calling Asque "Wyatt" and letting the stranger think he is in fact Wyatt Earp.
,Once they are safe, Crawford shows Asque a telegram he received signed "Friend," that states another friend of theirs, the Baltimore Kid (Astaire), is in danger and to please come quick. The pair and head out for Waco, TX to help. On their way, the pair seek out another former Ranger, Jason Fitch (Buchanan), who they find about to marry Louise Murphy (,Lillian Bronson). Crawford and Asque convince Fitch to leave his bride and go with them on their mission.
In Waco, they are told ,the Baltimore Kid had been accused of robbing a Wells Fargo office and was lynched be the towns people. The Rangers go to the local saloon to drink to their fallen friend only to find that the mystery is deeper and more complex than they thought. With fast draws and even quicker thinking the ,Over the Hill Gang, solves the mysteries and finally get to ride off into the sunset together.

Grab your snacks and settle in, it's time for another great western!

Friday (on Saturday) Funnies: Marriage Edition!

(P.R. and Stephen, 2013)
Hello Posse!
I hope you are all safe, happy, and healthy on this fine Saturday.
So, I got up today and about halfway through my day I realized I forgot to do the Friday Funnies blog. I was scheduled to do a video interview about my books serial yesterday and had spent all day getting ready for it. Since it was a video interview, I moved my office furniture around to get a good background, set up my books so they could be seen behind me, and put up a white board with all of my contact information on it to hang in the beside the books, and I even did a poll online to help me decide what to wear for it. Then it got rescheduled, of course. Murphy's Law!
It was also a day of IT issues, my dinner didn't get ordered when we ordered delivery, and the gas bottle I ordered weeks ago for our Soda Stream machine finally came but they sent the wrong kind of bottle. With all the hustle and prep and so much going wrong, the Friday blog just got lost in my fog. On the bright side, I am still doing WAY better than I used to before I set up the three day a week blog schedule, so yay me!
I have been updating my websites to include Chilean Spanish and German. So many of P.R.'s relatives speak Chilean Spanish, I would love for them to be able to check out my work. I am also picking up a few followers in Germany so I thought that would be a good addition. It is just a google translate app I added to the site so the translations might be off to a native speaker but at least they will have a better idea of what my work is about now.
But now, on with the blog! For today, I thought it would be good to do marriage jokes. Right now so many people seem to be struggling with their spouses during all the stress of the pandemic, civil rights unrest, and economic hardships. Maybe laughing about married life will help ease a bit of the stress.
I hope you like these, enjoy!
StephenQ: What happened when your wife found out you replaced your bed with a trampoline
A: She hit the roof.
Q: I heard you got divorced, what happened?
A: My doctor told me I couldn't touch anything alcoholic anymore.
Q: Did you know that statistics show that 4,153,237 people got married just last year.
A: Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't that be an even number?
Nurse: "Mr. Jones we are going to run a few tests. First, we need to get stool and urine samples."
Man to wife: "What did the nurse just say?"
Wife to husband: "She wants your underwear."
I accidentally handed my wife a glue stick instead of a chapstick. She still isn't talking to me.
,Scaring men is easy,,, just asked your husband if he remembers what today is.
,I asked my wife if she ever fantasizes about me, she said yes, me taking out the trash, me doing laundry, me mowing the lawn, me doing the dishes . . .
,A retired husband is often a full-time job for his wife.
And because I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, last but not least . . .
,Our therapist asked my wife why she wanted to end our marriage.
,My wife said she hated living with the constant Star Wars puns.
,I just look at the therapist and said, "Anger is strong with this one, divorce me she will!"
