Monday Movie Madness: Rio Lobo

Hey Posse!

Sorry this is coming out late today. I have been so preoccupied with Christmas shopping today and trying to get the menu set and items ordered for Thanksgiving that I completely forgot it was even Monday. This one is going to be short and sweet today because I still have so much to do today. So let's get right to it.

Today's movie is another John Wayne classic, Rio Lobo. This was the third in a series directed by Howard Hawks. It was preceded by Rio Bravo (1959) and El Dorado (1966). Wayne starred in all three movies. Rio Lobo was released by National General Pictures in 1970. The movie was filmed at Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico and in Tucson, Arizona.

Cord McNally (Wayne) is a Union leader who is charged with protecting a shipment of gold. His troops are attacked by Confederate forces, taking the gold and killing one of his best men in the raid. After the war, McNally finds out the Confederates were tipped off by someone from inside his own troops. McNally sets out to uncover the turncoats. A chance encounter leads him to the town of Rio Lobo where he finds the information he needs.

I had to search a bit for a good recipe to pair with this movie but I think Taste of Home's Cowboy Beef Dip (

Don't forget you can find all my past movie snack recipe links on the movie snack recipes page. (

So now, you know what time it is, posse. Get your snacks and settle in for another great John Wayne western.

Enjoy!

Friday Funnies: Happiness

Hello Posse!

This is going to be short and sweet today. With all of the stress of the elections, I thought it would be good to do a few jokes on happiness, something we can all use a bit more of no matter what day it is. Don't miss the last video with cute animals. If that doesn't make you giggle at least once, you may need something stronger . . . like a Robin William's video.

I hope this blog puts a smile on your face and make your soul a bit lighter!

Enjoy!

Stephen

I asked my wife what she wanted for her birthday.

She said, "Nothing would make her happier than a diamond necklace."

So I bought her nothing.

My wife loves for me to blow on her when she's having a hot flash, but to be honest . . . I'm not a fan.

My boss told me to have a good day. So I went home.

If a drug warning label reads, 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from abdominal cramps... does that mean that one person enjoys them?

Never ask a woman who is eating ice cream straight from the carton how her day went.

There's nothing like seeing the joy on my children's faces when they first see the Xbox package that actually contains the new underwear I got them for Christmas.

As my grandpa opened his 100th birthday card, he stared to tear up and said, "You know, one would have been enough."

People say money cannot buy you happiness, but I believe I would feel a lot better crying in a new BMW than walking.

Q: How do we know that soccer referees are happy?

A: They always whistle while they work.

Did you ever notice that -4° looks like a depressed guy sitting on a toilet?

And last but not least . . .

Q: Why are frogs so happy?

A: They always eat whatever is bugging them!

Wednesday Whatever: Election Stress!

Hello Posse!

I hope this blog finds you all safe, healthy, and not too stressed as we wait for this nail-biter of an election to come to the conclusion. I hope everyone who is eligible was able to get out and exercise your right to vote. There are a few great things about having come from Kansas and being able to vote early and online are two of them.

This election has been extremely heated for months and it does not look as if it will calm down anytime soon even after we get a final decision. No matter what the outcome, there will be millions of unhappy Americans who will be morning the defeat of their candidate. However, it would serve us all well to remember that this is the democratic process. If your candidate does not win this year, make a plan for the next election. Work locally to support your causes and never ever sacrifice your morals or personal beliefs for popular opinion. Stay strong!

In the mean time, it is good to do some things for self-care. turn off the TV and social media for a while. Once your vote has been cast, your part is done. Take a break from the rhetoric and spend some time with your family, watch a movie (check Monday's blogs for suggestions), go for a walk, play a board game, read a good book (see the Books tab for my suggestions for those), just have fun.

No matter who wins their elections today, America goes on. Elections will come around again in a few years for mid-terms. There will always be more ways to bring about the changes you want to see in the government. Do not lose faith.

Take care of yourselves and your families.

Dianne

P.S. This is my 300th blog on www.StephenBurckhardt.com. Considering how often I forgot to do them when I was first starting out, this is pretty amazing to me. Let us know what is your favorite thing about the blogs or a suggestion for something to make them better.

Monday Movie Madness: Remembering Connery

Hello Posse,

I had planned to talk about a different movie today but after the recent passing of Sean Connery, I decided to say a bit about the man and his movies.

Connery was known for being a great talent on the screen and had a reputation for being a somewhat of a misogynist in life. In an interview for Playboy magazine in 1965, and again later in an interview with Barbara Walters in 1987, Connery stated his belief that, at times, it is needed and justifiable to slap a woman. He specified, he would never strike a woman with a closed fist but an open hand, was acceptable.

This interview would be referenced again and again throughout his career. Though Connery seemed to have changed his stance on this in 2006, stating it is wrong to hit a woman. However, he had already set his imagine in the hearts and minds of many fans.

Controversies aside, Connery had a long cinematic history but was best known as Bond . . . James Bond. Playing 007 was Connery's breakthrough role and solidified his career as an A-list actor. He originally did not want to commit to playing the same character for a long series, but he also understood how important the role could be for his career if it was financially successful. Connery appeared as Bond is seven Bond films. The first five Bond films: Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), and You Only Live Twice (1967). After this last film, the role of Bond was passed to Australian actor, George Lazenby for On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). Connery appeared again as Bond in Diamonds Are Forever (1971). After this film, Roger Moore took over as Bond for the next six films until Never Say Never Again (1983) when Connery would take up the mantle of Bond for one final film.

All seven films of Connery's Bond films were commercially successful. His portrayal of Bond has been so well received, the American Film Institute selected Connery's James Bond, as the third-greatest hero in cinema history only behind Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. He was also later honored with knighthood by The Queen at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh in 2000.

Though Connery is best known as 007, he had a long and varied career as an actor, appearing in everything from dramas to sci-fi. One of my personal favorite films was one of his sci-fi movies, Outland. Connery had just one western, Shalako, in his filmography. I am willing to admit, I have never even heard of it even but I will have to be sure to give it a view sometime soon.

Shalako was released in 1968 and was a British-German western. It starred Sean Connery as Shalako. The film also featured Brigitte Bardot, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins, and Honor Blackman. Shalako was directed by Edward Dmytryk and was filmed in London and Spain. The story was based on a novel by Louis L'Amour and was the first in a trilogy of book to film adaptations for L'Amour.

The film takes place in New Mexico in 1880. A group of European aristocrats come to the area to experience the Wild West. A French countess, Irina Lazaar (Bardot), is separated from her group and attacked by Apache warriors. Shalako (Connery) rescues her and is confronted by Apaches as he tries to get her back to her group. Lazaar and Shalako promise the Apache chief that they will get the group to leave Apache land if they let them go. The chief agrees, but his son tells Shalako he will kill one day.

When they get back to the group, Shalako tries to keep his word and get the group to leave, but the leader of the group refuses to go. Shalako decides to go the nearby army fort to get reinforcements to come and remove the group from the Apache land before they incite a conflict with the tribe. As he leaves for the fort, Apaches attack the group.

Shalako returns and finds their local guides have taken their stage coach and left the group stranded. He tries to lead the group out of the area on foot. With Apaches on their trail, the group will have to fight for their survival. In the end, Shalako saves as many lives as possible and rides off into the sunset with the countess by his side.

Movie Snack

Since this film was a German collaboration, I think a typical German movie snack is fitting. This takes us to Sally's Baking Addiction for her Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels (

I love these big soft pretzels with melted cheese and a bit of mustard.

So now you know what time it is, posse! Grab your snacks and settle in for another great movie!

Enjoy,

Stephen

Wednesday Whatever: Cover Reveal Coming

Hello Posse!

If you follow me on social media, I am sure you have seen my posts that the cover reveal for part 5 of the Into the West Saga Serial is finally coming. I have the cover art finished and we have finally decided on the title. Originally the plan was to have Into the West: Family Ties as book 5 and end the serial here. We already had the cover art ready to go and the story set. However, the characters in the story did not agree. They decided there was more to share with you all so we had to change things up.

If I haven't mentioned it before, when I write these stories it does not even seem to me that I am the one coming up with the story. For me, it is just like a movie playing in my head that I do not control, I am just watching and writing down what happens. I write everything stream of consciousness. There are no outlines, no plot notes, I just watch the movie and write it down so I can tell you what I am seeing. That might seem odd, but that is how it works for me. Sometimes I feel like a total bystander in my own work.

Regardless of how we got here, I have finally finished the cover art for part 5 and this one is very different from all the others. It is much more dramatic to go with the more dramatic storyline that is coming. I can't wait to share it with you all and hear from you what you think.

Keep watching my social media, especially my Stephen Burckhardt Facebook page (Facebook.com/Stephen.Burckhardt.Westerns/

Monday Movie Madness: Halloween Classics

Hello Posse!

I decided to do one last double feature because I just couldn't chose between these two movies. Both are among my "must watch" movies every October. One is a great family film and at the opposite end of the spectrum, a movie that helped shape the slasher movie genre. I am referring to Hocus Pocus and the original 1978 Halloween.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

This movie was released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1993. It is considered a dark comedy/horror (sort of). This movie stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, with a supporting cast that includes Omri Katz, Thora Birch, and Vinessa Shaw. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts and follows the lives of three sister witches who were put to death only to be accidentally resurrected on Halloween night by an unsuspecting teenage boy.

This movie was actually not well received when it was first released but has since become a cult classic and enjoys a bump in video sales every Halloween. A sequel to this holiday classic is currently in development for Disney+. This is a great film the entire family can enjoy together which is not the case for the second movie if you have young children.

Halloween (1978)

This movie was released in 1978 and is a clear American horror film classic. It was directed and scored by John Carpenter and co-written with Debra Hill, producer. The film stars Donald Pleasence and was the film debut of Jamie Lee Curtis.

The story follows the tragic lives of the Myers family. On Halloween night, a six-year-old Michael Myers decides to kill his older sister. He is placed in a mental hospital where he lives quietly for 15 years. For reasons unknown at the time, Michael breaks out of the mental hospital in 1978 and returns to his hometown and stalks Laurie Strode (Curtis). Michael kills several of her friends as Michael's psychiatrist (Pleasence) tries to stop him.

This film grossed $70 million at the box office making it one of the most profitable independent films. Its success spawned the Halloween franchise which includes 11 movies, with two more slated for release in 2021 and 2022, comic books, video games, toys, costumes, and novels.

It has been suggested that this film was a social statement on the teenagers of the 1970s. In the film, the victims of Michael Myers are portrayed as sexually promiscuous, drug users while the heroine who is able to survive Michael's attacks is held as a virginal icon of innocence and purity. This theme would be played out in other slasher films of the time period, eventually leading to the "rules" to survive a horror movie as mentioned in the movie Scream.

Halloween is a fascinating look at the cultural views of the 1970s in American. It was even honored in 2006 by the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. It was selected for preservation as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." That is pretty impressive for an independent, slasher film.

Now, how can these two films be tied in any way with westerns? It is actually surprisingly easy thanks to two supporting actresses, Kathleen Freeman (Hocus Pocus) and Kyle Richards (Halloween).

Freeman plays Miss Olin in Hocus Pocus, a teacher at Jacob Bailey High School. Freeman has a long career that includes numerous credits in films and TV shows. She acted in some of my favorite western movies including North to Alaska, Support Your Local Sheriff, and Support Your Local Gunfighter. On the small screen, viewers might recognize her from roles on Wagon Train, Rawhide, and Bonanza.

Kyle Richards plays Lindsey Wallace in Halloween, one of the children Strode (Curtis) ends up babysitting and saving from Michael Myers. Richards started her acting career as a child star. One of her early credits was as Alicia, the adopted daughter of Mr. Edwards on Little House on the Prairie. Richards appeared in 19 episodes.

So now it's time for some movie snacks. How about a super simple brownie treat from The Farm Girl Gabs website. Check out her ingenious Hocus Pocus Brownies (slasher sliders.

So now it's time to get your snacks and settle in for another great Halloween double feature! Be sure to share your favorite Halloween movies with us in the comments. We would love to hear from you!

Enjoy,

Friday Funnies: In the Pumpkin Patch!

Hello Posse!

I'm keeping the autumn/Halloween fun going with a bit of pumpkin humor! Pumpkins are such a great and versatile squash. Fun fact, pumpkins are also classified as gourds and fruit. They come in various colors, shapes, and sizes. Some pumpkins have a smooth skin and others look like they have barnacles. No matter which variety you prefer, they can all be great fun to carve for Halloween.

If you do carve a pumpkin, why not try roasting the pumpkin seeds for a tasty snack. YOu need to wash and dry the seeds first. Then toss them in a little olive oil. Add salt and pepper to taste. If you want to jazz them up a bit more, you can add garlic powder or Old Bay Seasoning. Spread them out on a cookie sheet lined with baking paper. Cook at 350° F (177° C) until golden brown, about 15 minutes depending on your oven. It is a good idea to stir them once or twice during cooking to get them evenly brown. When they are brown and crunchy, they are ready to eat!

Need another treat? Why not check out these cute kid friendly pumpkin jokes that are perfect to lift your spirits this Halloween season. If you can read them while sipping a pumpkin spice latte and enjoying some warm roasted pumpkin seeds, even better!

After the blog, be sure to check out the rest of my webpage and see what else I am working on. (Hint: Part five of the Into the West Saga Serial!)

Enjoy!

Stephen

Whatever Wednesday: Halloween Treats

Hello Posse!

I just love this time of year, the decorations, the costumes, the parties, and of course, the treats. I have been craving Rice Krispie Treats for a while now and I actually have the ingredients to make some. I get Marshmallow Fluff because, and most people don't know this, it is vegan where marshmallows are not.

Since we are so close to Halloween, I do not want to make just any Rice Krispie Treats, I want to make some Halloween inspired ones. A quick search found these cute Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats by Classy Cooking. (

These cute little sweet treats should start to put anyone in the Halloween Spirit. These would be a great snack to munch on while watching the old classic horror flick Halloween staring Jamie Lee Curtis. I know it's not Monday Movie Madness day but I love that movie and will find any excuse to plug it. A pumpkin is a key prop in many of the scenes so this seems fitting.

One more little treat you might be interested in if you read my Into the West Saga Serial, I have just finished the cover for Part Five in the Serial and will be revealing it very soon. I have created a fun reveal overlay in a design program. We will see how well it works. So keep watching my social media for updates. It will be coming soon!

In keeping with the pumpkin theme, how about a blast from the past with another treat from DailyMotion.com, It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown CBS Special (Oct.23,1986) (Into the West Saga Serial are on sale now on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

If you have read my books, please think about leaving a review somewhere. You have no idea how important reviews are to an indie author. Even if the entire review is just "I liked it" it will help a great deal. Many platforms only count the number of reviews not what they say. When you get past a certain number they start adding your books to their promotions automatically. It is advertising few indie authors, including myself, could afford to buy.

Thanks for following along with my journey and drop me a line sometime. I love to hear what people think of my work, the website, the blogs, anything really.

Have a great Wednesday!

Dianne

Monday Movie Madness: Universal Monster Movies

Hello Posse,

I'm going to try to keep this blog short because I want to get back to working on part five of my Into the West Saga Serial but todays movies are some of my favorite of the black and white movie era, Universal Studio's The Wolfman and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. I have long been a fan of the entire Universal Studio's Monster Movie Collection and even own them all. When I found out a few years ago that my mother had a tie to someone in one of the movies, I was shocked she never mentioned it before knowing what a huge fan I am. I'll explain that a bit later.

How can these monster movies be tied to westerns? I know of two very easy connections to make for these films. With the The Wolfman, Lon Chaney Jr. stars as the "wolfman". When he first started earning staring rolls in films, he was cast in a few westerns including RKO's 12 episode serial The Last Frontier. As for The Creature from the Black Lagoon, one of the uncredited underwater stuntmen was a staple in many Hollywood westerns. I am talking about Jack "Blackjack" Young. To read more about Blackjack's work in Hollywood, The Creature from the Black Lagoon starts on page 54.

I knew about Blackjack because my mother once went out with him when she was about 18 or 19 and he was in his 30s. A few years ago they reconnected on social media and renewed their friendship before he passed. Blackjack had quite an amazing career in westerns over the years and he is the inspiration for my own Marshal Blackjack James character name. I did not personally know the man so I had no way to model the character after him, but I thought the name was a nice tribute to his western film legacy.

Unfortunately, I do not have time to go into depth right now on these movies so I'm just going to give you a brief synopsis and a link to more information.

The Wolfman (1941)

See Universal Monsters Fandom for more information (

This American horror classic stars Lon Chaney Jr. as the wolfman and co-stars Claude Rains, Warren William, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Bela Lugosi, Evelyn Ankers, and Maria Ouspenskaya.

After the death of his brother, Larry Talbot (Chaney) returns home to reconnect with his estranged father, Sir John Talbot (Rains). It is not long after his arrival that Larry becomes infatuated with Gwen Conliffe (Ankers), who runs a local shop. Talbot buys a silver-headed walking stick decorated with a wolf as an excuse to talk to her. Gwen tells him the wolf's head actually represents a werewolf.

Later that night, Larry tries to rescue Gwen's friend from a wolf attack. He kills the animal with the walking stick, but is bitten on the chest in the altercation. A fortuneteller named Maleva (Ouspenskaya) tells Larry the wolf was actually her son Bela (Lugosi) who was a werewolf. She goes on to tell Larry that he will now become a werewolf himself.

Talbot does in fact become a werewolf and begins to stalk the people in the village, killing a local gravedigger. Talbot has some memories of becoming a werewolf and wanting to kill. He tries to fight the need but eventually is overcome again. When he attacks Gwen, the woman he loves, he is killed with his own walking stick by his father.

This is easily my favorite of all the Universal Studio's Monster Movies.

The Creature fro the Black Lagoon ( 1954 )

See Universal Monsters Fandom for more information (

This American horror movie was shot in 3D and stars Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, Richard Denning, Antonio Moreno, Nestor Paiva, and Whit Bissell. The creature was played by Ben Chapman on land and by Ricou Browning under water. Jack James was uncredited for his underwater gill-man work in the second unit pick up shots for the film.

Fossilized remains of a webbed hand are found on a geology expedition in the Amazon. Dr, Carl Maia (Moreno), the expedition leader, orders his assistants to stay in camp while he leaves to visits the marine biology institute. Soon after Dr. Maia leaves camp, a gill-man which resembles the fossil they found, becomes curious about explorers and starts to check out the camp. When he is discovered, the assistants become freighted and are killed in the ensuing confrontation.

In the mean time, Dr. Maia returns to came with more help. The group takes a tramp steamer, the Rita, back to camp. It is captained by a rather crusty captain named Lucas (Paiva). The return passengers include Dr. Maia, and his associates Dr. Edwin Thompson (Bissell), Dr. Mark Williams (Denning), and Dr. David Reed (Carlson), as well as David's girlfriend and colleague, Kay Lawrence (Adams).

When the group makes it back to camp, they find that Dr. Maia's assistants have been killed. The group search the area trying to find more creature remains but the search turns up nothing. Dr. Reed suggests that part of the embankment, that might have contained the rest of the skeleton, could have broken off and washed downriver at some point. Dr. Maia says the tributary empties into a lagoon down river.

Captain Lucas calls the lagoon the "Black Lagoon" and warns the group that it is a place from which no one returns. The scientists ignore the captains warnings and head for the lagoon. The group is unaware that the gill-man has been watching them the whole time and has become fascinated with Kay. The creature follows the expedition to the Black Lagoon.

Once there, the scientists begin diving to collect rock samples from the bottom of the lagoon. During a break in the work, Kay goes swimming and is followed underwater by the gill-man. When the creature is briefly tangled in one of the ship's drag lines, it loses a claw in the net, revealing its presence.

The gill-man is finally captured and locked in a cage but not after killing several crew members from the Rita. In an escape, the creature attacks Dr. Thompson, who is saved when Kay smashes the creature with a lantern. After the attack, Dr. Reed wants to leave before anyone else is killed but Dr. Williams wants to stay and capture the gill-man.

When they try to sail back out of the lagoon, they find the creature has blocked the passage with logs. As the others try to clear the path, Dr. Williams tries to capture the creature alone and is killed. After, Kay is abducted and taken to the creatures lair. The group mounts a rescue and are able to save Kay. In the confrontation, the gill-man is shot numerous times and goes back into the lagoon were the body is seen sinking into the murky depths.

So now it's time to get your movie snacks (recipe at the bottom of the blog) and settle in for another great, classic, double feature!

Enjoy!

For today's double feature, I thought a recipe from Ready Set Eat's site would be a great complement to the films.

Try their howling good Fish Sticks Under Wraps (

You can pair these with a nice, spicy, dipping sauce to really put a little hair on your chest.

Try this simple dipping sauce recipe to kick it up a notch:

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup mayonnaise
