robinha:

I finally finished David Bowie and Prince fanart today! I drew the sketch when Prince passed away and it took me almost two years to make time to complete the illustration. This was another fun exercise with coloring digitally. This print will be available for sale at MoCCA this weekend in NYC. Come check it out at table A106!

:

I made a ‘Call Me By Your Name’ fan art! It was one of my favorite movies from last year and I just loved how it reminded me of a good shonen-ai manga that I used to read when I was a teenager. I colored it digitally using Kyle T Webster watercolor brush. Lately, I’ve been struggling with coloring digitally and this was a great exercise to see what a digital watercolor brush can do.

Here’s a work in progress of this illustration. I always start with a pencil rough sketch on paper. It’s the most comfortable and fastest way to get my ideas down. Then I scan it and do the cleaned up pencil drawing in Photoshop. Then on a new layer, I start coloring the figures. I concentrate on especially the face. Getting the right skin tone and facial expression is very important so I want to spend enough time to work on it the way I like it. Then in a new layer, I color the rest of the picture roughly to see if the overall color works. Then I refine them and it’s done!

I am going to bring some copies of this print for sale for MoCCA next weekend so if you are in NYC and a fan of this gorgeous movie, stop by my table at A106!

robinha:Getting ready for the March for our lives this Saturday!...

robinha:

Getting ready for the March for our lives this Saturday! I am brimming with ideas for the posters. This one is probably too complicated to duplicate on a cardboard but oh well, it was fun to draw! I have a few more ideas that I can’t wait to draw. I will post them up soon. Hope many people participate in this march against gun violence wherever you are. Stay safe and support each other!

robinha:

Here’s one of the recipe comics I made for my Banchan in 2 Pages mini-comics #2. This is a great recipe for vegetarians who want to enjoy the Korean bbq flavor. You can use the marinade used in mushrooms for tofu, tempeh, and jackfruits too. I am doing a challenge/ experiment this year and go pescatarian when cooking at home. I wasn’t eating that much meat compared to some people but after reading books and articles about the meat in our supermarkets, I begun to think eating less meat is probably healthier and more environmentally safe and mindful way to live. I can’t go all vegetarian since I love pork belly and fried chicken so much. I might have to order that sometimes when I am eating out.  But at least when I am at home I am gonna try to use as little to no meat as possible. And it hasn’t been too hard so far- lucky for me, I love vegetables and there are so many varieties of vegetables out there to explore! Next time I am gonna experiment and try to make the vegan version of Kimchi. Wish me luck!

robinha:Found a comic book cover illustration I made back in...

robinha:

Found a comic book cover illustration I made back in 2013. It was a short comic I wrote involving a witch who turns people into cats and uses them to do her biddings. Other than that, I don’t remember much about the story, even though I spent quite a long time working on it. In the end, I couldn’t really figure out the ending and abandoned it. This is just one of the dozens of comics I started and then didn’t finish. Writing and drawing a good comic is hard but finishing them is even harder. I salute all comics creators who write and draw their own comics and have the endurance to finish them!

I’ve traveled a lot throughout my life and each time I pack for a trip, I try to perfect my matching layer skill so I don’t pack too little or too much of anything and pack as light as possible. I’m leaving for a 3 week trip to Europe this Friday and here’s what’s in my suitcase.

Tostones con queso was my favorite food when I stayed in Ometepe...

Tostones con queso was my favorite food when I stayed in Ometepe island in Nicaragua last February. Slightly melted salty queso fresco on top of a piping hot golden disc of plantains was the perfect partner to ice cold Tona beer. Since we’ve been back to the state, we make this dish often because it’s easy to make. Fried plantain is a great vessel to any kind of toppings. The possibility is endless!

Here’s a watercolor, wordless comic illustrating how to make tostones con queso. It’s been a long time I drew comics with traditional medium and I realize how much more fun it is to draw on actual paper with actual paints. I should do this more often.
