Do you choose your dream job—or the guy you’ve always wanted?
Three years ago Hannah met a sexy surfer while on vacation in Westport, WA. After a whirlwind summer romance, he ghosts. She’s tried to move on, but no other guy has ever measured up. And now she comes face to face with him on the first day of her new internship. To make matters worse, he’s one of her managers, and he has no idea who she is.
Matt graduated in December after his final football season, and is now working a desk job. Having spent his whole life as an athlete, the day to day grind chafes at him. All his friends are moving on with relationships and pursuing their goals while he’s left as the third wheel. And despite his reputation as a player, he’s the only one who ever wanted a girlfriend.
And then Hannah Glover shows back up in his life—the girl who simultaneously made him want a relationship and ruined him for anyone else without him even realizing it. He wants her now more than ever, but she doesn’t trust him after the way he ended things before. Which should be fine since he’s her manager at his first job out of college, and their company has a strict no fraternization policy. But Matt just can’t seem to help himself where she’s concerned. And she won’t be an intern forever, right?
Will he be able to convince Hannah to give them another shot? Or will their past and their present conspire to keep them apart?

His hands traveled up her arms to cup her jaw and the base of her skull, tilting her head up so he could touch his lips to hers. A brief touch, so light that she almost questioned whether it actually happened. From the look in his eyes, she’d expected to be devoured, but instead he touched her lips with his again. And once more before pulling back to look down into her face. “Are you still cold?” His voice came out as a rasp.
“Yeah.” Hers was breathy and soft, too. He nodded, pulling her with him toward the couch, settling her with her back against the arm and her feet in his lap. He slipped her shoes off, then pulled the blanket over her. His hands enveloped her right foot, one hand cupping the heel, the other wrapped around her toes, hot against her chilled skin. “Holy shit, your feet are freezing.”
A snort escaped before she could stop it. “I know.”
He smiled back, kneading the balls of her feet with his thumbs.
She let out a wordless moan. His fingers felt so good, strong and sure as they coaxed warmth back to her icicle toes. His eyes met hers, dark with lust, the light blue just a rim around the black of his pupils. His smile turned wicked, and she became aware of the hardness pressing against her other ankle. Heat rose in her cheeks, and his smile only grew bigger. He shifted his attention to her other foot, picking it up so that it didn’t press against his cock anymore.
After massaging and warming her foot, he worked his way up her calf, squeezing the muscle, his thumbs stroking and caressing her skin, warming her legs too. When he reached her knee, he moved her leg to the side, pushing the blanket off her so it slid to the floor, moving between her legs into the opening he’d created. She let him, enjoying the way his hands felt on her too much to stop. She sucked in a breath as his hands continued their way up, one on each leg, slowly moving and caressing their way from her knees to her thighs, spreading them further apart, raising the hem of her skirt until it barely covered her thong, his face intent as he watched the path his hands made. He lowered himself, lining up his pelvis with hers, resting between her thighs, before raising his eyes to hers and kissing her deeply. He took his time, his tongue sliding and stroking against hers.
His hands skimmed up under the sweatshirt, and he sat back to peel it off her. She sat up as well, raising her arms to help. Out of the cold and now with his weight on her and his tongue in her mouth, she was getting too warm, feeling suffocated by the sweatshirt, its thickness an unwanted barrier. His eyes traveled over her, taking in the swell of her cleavage where it rose under the square neckline of her black dress. He traced a finger along the edge of the fabric, and her nipples hardened even more, like they were reaching out for him.

Sullivan waited until his girl got a good grip on Megan’s arms and stepped backward as fast as he could in the water. It was enough that Megan lost her balance and Chris couldn’t keep her upright with the other chick dragging Megan down by her arms.
She came up laughing, pushing her hair out of her face and wiping the water out of her eyes. She splashed water at his chest. “You let me fall off!”
He grinned down at her. “I couldn’t help it! You got taken out.”
She poked out her lower lip in a fake pout that only lasted a second before she smiled again. “We’re supposed to be a team. That means we go down together. Aren’t football players supposed to understand the importance of teamwork?”
“Are you questioning my loyalty?” She laughed at him, and he grinned back, his eyes on her mouth. Her lips were plump and red, begging to be kissed. He loved the way she looked, her hair wet and slicked back, her face lit up with a smile.
“It looks like they’re going again. Do you want to keep playing?”
Megan’s voice pulled his attention back from his wandering thoughts. Giving in to his lust with her was probably a bad idea. Unless maybe she was interested too …
“Chris?”
“Hmm?”
She gestured at the others. “Are we going to play again?”
Man, she was distracting. He nodded once and grinned. “Let’s go.”
He dropped down again and she climbed back on. He suppressed a sigh as he realized this was the closest he was going to get to feeling her thighs around his head, and it wasn’t from the direction he wanted. But she was his roommate. He needed to remember that.
They played two more rounds of chicken fight. They lost the next round early but won the one after that. Megan sat on his shoulders with her arms raised. “Whoo! We won!”
He laughed, then maneuvered her so she turned and slid down his front. They were pressed together for a moment, her breasts squished against his torso, the bare skin of her belly against his lower abdomen. Megan looked up into his face, and he saw her brown eyes get darker. He dropped his eyes to her lips. They were parted on an indrawn breath and he wanted to kiss them so bad.
She broke the spell of the moment, stepping back, breaking the contact between them, and he immediately missed the feel of her body pressed against his. “Thanks. I had fun.” She glanced over her shoulder toward the shallow end, then looked back at him. “I’m, um. I’m going to go get a drink.”

Abby nodded, and Lance moved in to kiss her again. His tongue swept past her lips, sliding against hers, teasing and tasting. His hands, like earlier, roamed down her back and gripped her ass once again. He pulled her tightly against him, grinding their hips together.
Her hands were trapped between them. She ran them over his chest, feeling the planes of his muscles, gripping the fabric of his t-shirt to pull herself closer.
One of Lance’s hands traveled up to her back, sliding under the hem of her tank top, teasing the skin just under the waistband of her shorts. His fingers slid lower, sliding along the top of her ass, while his other hand kneaded her flesh through her clothes.
With a small sound of frustration in the back of his throat, Lance broke off the kiss. He led her the few steps to his bed, sitting down on the edge and positioning her between his legs.
Abby wasn’t sure what he was doing. She stopped caring when he raised her shirt and began kissing her stomach, his tongue teasing along the edge of her belly button. Her hands went to his head, threading her fingers through his hair, enjoying the feeling of his mouth against her skin. She felt his hands slide up the backs of her thighs. He gripped her ass briefly before sliding around to the front. He made short work of unbuttoning and unzipping her shorts, pulling back so he could look at her face and watch her reaction.
He didn’t immediately push her shorts off her hips like Abby had expected. He left them hanging there, running his hands back around, caressing her waist and hips before finally sliding his hands under the fabric.
He groaned when he encountered bare skin. “Abby, are you wearing underwear?”
She licked her lips and nodded. “A thong.” Her husky whisper matched his.
“Can I see?”

Hannah held Matt’s gaze for what felt like an eternity, or maybe just a second. He stepped back from the table. She looked down at the empty glass in her hands, then out over the moving crowd, anywhere but at the space he’d occupied. A pang of disappointment reverberated below her ribs, fighting with the music for space in her body.
She took a deep breath, lifting her head. It shouldn’t matter. She came here with Elena and now wanted to hang out with Evan. He was funny, attractive, and interested. She shouldn’t feel disappointed that Matt was leaving and not looking at her anymore.
“I wouldn’t have expected to bump into you in a place like this.” Hannah drew in a deep breath at the low voice in her ear before she turned, her nose almost bumping into the center of Matt’s chest.
She raised her eyes, looking into his face. His expression gave nothing away. He’d gotten better at that face since she’d known him last. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
He tilted his head, examining her face. “From the way you dress in the office you look all prim and proper.” A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. “Or do you have an inner naughty librarian thing going on?”
Hannah’s nostrils flared, and she didn’t know how to respond. She narrowed her eyes. “Maybe I do. And I’m not sure seeing me at work a few times gives you enough information to judge my character.”
He opened his mouth and closed it again, shaking his head a little, the playful smirk now gone. “You’re right. Seeing you a few times wouldn’t give me that kind of information.” He leaned in closer. “But my window overlooks the front doors. I’ve seen you every day.”
The low rumble of his voice sent shivers down Hannah’s spine, but she didn’t want to let him know that he affected her. Still. After all this time his presence and his voice in her ear had arousal zinging down her spine and wetness soaking her thong. Instead she gave him a cheeky grin. “Stalking me now? That seems inappropriate for an HR manager.”
He sucked in a breath in response, his eyes going wide. “No. What? I’m not—“
Hannah laughed, both at his stammering response and that her flippant comment had reduced him to this. When she’d known him before, he’d been smooth and unflappable. The only time she’d been able to get him flustered or losing control was in the bedroom. Or the back of the car, or covered by a blanket under the stars on the beach, or … Yeah, she needed to stop thinking about that. She laid a hand on his arm, the memories making her feel closer to him than she should. “I’m kidding, Matt.”
His eyes zeroed in on where she touched him. She realized what she was doing and jerked her hand away. A look passed over his face, almost like disappointment, but then he put his neutral mask back in place.

What I’ve Been Reading, 10-23-16
Can’t Touch This by Tess Hunter aka Pepper Winters was a fun and funny read about a veterinarian and a guy who rescues lots of dogs. It’s endearing and sweet but funny too. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re in the mood for a feel good read. Because, really, what’s sweeter than a hot guy who rescues puppies? I mean, come on.
For a couple of sweet reads in the spirit of Halloween, check out Bewitched and Spellbound by Daisy Prescott. This, again, was Facebook advertising working on me. They’re both short, but they flow one into the other. Set in Salem, MA, it’s the story of two college students, one of whom is a real-life witch, and they’re both descended from women executed in the infamous Salem Witch Trials. They’re cute and have a very mild heat rating.
Next up was Plunge by Violet Paige. It was good, a typical bad boy athlete meets the girl who never has a one night stand. He’s a swimmer and it’s set with the Rio Olympics as the backdrop. I enjoyed it, but I felt like the resolution came a little too easily. But, well-written steamy scenes and enjoyable characters, so check it out if that sounds up your alley and you don’t mind it being light on the angst for the climax and resolution.
The one of this bunch that I was most looking forward to was Our Options Have Changed by Julia Kent and Elisa Reed. I’m a big fan of Julia Kent, so I preordered this when I saw it. And after reading it, I’ve preordered book 2. I loved it. It’s an unlikely pairing of a woman who’s about to adopt a baby on her own and a single dad who’s youngest kid just went off to college. The tension between what they each want for themselves and from each other is deliciously well done. The writing blends together really well. It’s a little more serious than what I’m most used to reading by Julia Kent. Her Shopping for a Billionaire series gets downright slapstick at times, and the Random series is a thing all its own. But this book is sincere and beautiful in the best way. I highly recommend it.
I recently started At Any Turn by Brenna Aubrey. I’d read At Any Price quite a while ago and bought the first three books in the series when the trio went on sale a while back, but just haven’t gotten back to them. So I reread the last chunk of At Any Price and am getting stuck into At Any Turn.
Driving to Bellevue for the Emerald City Writer’s Conference last week and all the crazy that surrounds traveling cut into my reading time quite a bit the last couple weeks. But I’m getting settled back into my usual routine, which means more time for writing and more time for reading.

What I’ve Been Reading, 10/4/16
I feel like I haven’t been getting as much reading done lately. Probably because I’ve been working on the final edits on Managed Hearts. But now that that’s done, I can spend that time reading again.
So, without further ado
Here’s what I’ve been reading lately.
I’m currently reading Hard Luck by Liv Morris. It’s billed as a romantic comedy, and while there are some amusing situations, it’s not quite the laugh-out-loud funny that I usually associate with romantic comedy. That said, it’s still an engaging story. I’m only about a third of the way into it, so I can give an unqualified opinion, but so far so good.
I recently finished a couple of books by Sabrina Paige. This was another situation where I got hooked by a Facebook ad (I think Hard Luck might’ve been, too. I don’t remember.) I saw an ad for Double Team: A MFM Menage Romance, and the tiny excerpt sounded entertaining. It’s funny and dirty, and I enjoyed it. Rolled in with it was Prince Albert, which is a royal (almost) steps trope, so that was a new spin. It’s another dirty, fun read. And the dedication made me laugh.
Before that I read Man Candy by Melanie Harlow. This was the first book of hers I’ve read, and I definitely plan on finding some more. I always enjoy books that turn gender norms around. In this case, it was the female character that didn’t want a real relationship. More often than not, it’s the guy. So having the guy wanting a relationship, and working hard to get her to come around, was nice. I’ve read a few like this lately, so it seems to be getting more common, but still less common than the other way around IME.
And lastly, I read the Alpha boxed set by Jasinda Wilder, which is three books—Alpha, Beta, and Omega. This was a bit more of a romantic suspense trilogy than I originally realized. It was good, though, and kept me hooked through all three books. The boxed set is still on sale for $2.99 as of this writing, which is what I got it for. Again, this was me clicking on a FB ad. Ha. I’m a sucker for those things.
What have you been reading?

His smile grew bigger. “You seem a little nervous.”
She chuckled. “Yeah, a little.” She waved a hand around. “I’m just not sure what to expect here. What this is. What you want, exactly.”
His fingers flexed on her hips again. “Just you. Just this. Us. Another chance.” His voice dropped lower. “I missed you.”
Hannah’s breath stopped in her throat at that declaration. At least Matt didn’t mince words. That hadn’t changed. He’d always been direct with her, especially about the fact that he wanted her, from the very beginning. But she pulled away and turned toward the couch, shaking her head. “You missed me, huh? Really?”
She turned back to him, arms crossed over her chest and eyes narrowed. The coffee table stood between them now, providing a needed barrier. His hands on her body and his lips on her skin short-circuited her brain. And that statement from the guy who’d just left her hanging was ridiculous.
He stuffed his hands into his pockets, his face serious. “Yeah. I did.”
She tilted her head, one eyebrow creeping up her forehead. “Since when? Yesterday? Friday? Or before?”
At least he had the grace to look sheepish at the last question. One hand came up to rub the back of his neck, and he dropped his gaze for a moment before looking her in the eyes again. “Look, I’m sorry about what happened before. About the way things ended.”
Hannah snorted. “Ended? You mean the way you left me hanging?”
He nodded. “Yeah, it was a dick move. I’m sorry. Really, I am. I was young and stupid, and I didn’t realize what I was giving up when I let you go like that.”
“You didn’t let me go, Matt. You ghosted me. At least if you’d had the balls to end things I would’ve had some closure.”
He nodded again, his mouth twisted in a grimace, his blue eyes pained. “I know. Believe me, I’ve regretted it since I realized you’d stopped emailing me me, and I didn’t know what to do about it or how to make it up to you, especially with you still in high school three hours away and planning on going to college on the other side of the state. I figured it was better for both of us to just let it go. It was shitty of me to treat you that way and not have the balls to have a hard conversation, and for that I’m so sorry.” He took a step around the coffee table so he could get close to her, but she moved away and held up a hand. “Please, Hannah. I am sorry. Do you want me to beg?”

My question dies before it finishes when I realize Max is right there. He pulls the drinks out of my hands and sets them on the counter at my back without a word. His hands return to my hips where he pulls me against him, his mouth coming down on mine once more.
This. This is what I expected in the hallway. His mouth is firm and demanding, and he nips at my lower lip with his teeth. With a gasp at the unexpected sting my mouth opens, and his tongue sweeps in. He tastes like strawberries.
His hands run up my back under my shirt, kneading and caressing my skin. I’m swept away by him, by his kiss, by his commanding presence, and it seems like all I can do to hold on, my fists clutching his shirt my only anchor.
He breaks away from my mouth and runs his lips down my jaw to my neck, biting and sucking at the place where my neck meets my shoulder. I shrug my shoulder to discourage that. It feels good, but I don’t want a hickey. I’m twenty-two for God’s sake, not a teenager in the first throes of lust. I didn’t even let boys give me hickeys then, especially not with two older brothers watching all the guys who were interested in me.
Max raises his head, a wicked grin on his lips and mischief dancing in his eyes. Before I can react he lifts my tank top, and my arms raise to help him strip it off me. He tosses it to the side, his eyes on my breasts. I look down and realize I’m wearing the most boring bra imaginable—beige cotton with zero decoration. It’s not like I expected to show off my lingerie for anyone today.
I open my mouth to explain away the bra choice, nerves getting the better of me. Before I can say anything he traces one finger along the edge of the cup. “You’re beautiful, Cate.”
I guess boring lingerie doesn’t faze Max. Both hands come up and cup my breasts. His large hands engulf them, the upper curve just spilling over his grip. He circles my nipples with his thumbs, bringing them to attention, absorbed by what he’s doing to me.
He tugs one cup aside to expose my now-hard nipple. Bending down, he takes it in his mouth and sucks deep, a groan rumbling in his chest. I can’t stifle the gasp that escapes from my mouth, and I clutch at the counter behind me so I don’t fall from the sensation.
His hands reach behind me to unhook my bra, and he stands up so he can pull the straps down my arms, letting it fall to the floor at our feet. His eyes flick up to my face for a moment to check in with me, and he leads me by the hand to the bed. Sitting on the edge, he brings me to stand between his legs. “So beautiful.” His hands run up my torso and caress my breasts, teasing the nipples, sliding to my back to bring me closer so his mouth can play with them some more. In this position his head is at the perfect height to reach my breasts. The longer he plays, the weaker my legs get, and I clutch at his shoulders so I don’t fall, his hands on my ass holding me up.

A throat clearing draws my thoughts back to the present and my attention away from the window. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome stands at the end of my table. He inclines his head toward the chair across from me, his eyes still studying me intently. “Is this seat taken?”
I shake my head, mute, goosebumps skittering over my skin at the sound of his voice, and my diaphragm paralyzed again. His lips curve even more, more of a smirk than a smile. He folds himself so that he sits across from me, his glass of red wine on the table in front of him.
I take a drink of my own wine, needing something to do and a way to clear the blockage that has formed in my throat. After a couple of swallows I think maybe I can get some words out. “I didn’t invite you to take it.” I lift an eyebrow, hoping to come across as coy and flirty, and take another sip from my glass. My voice rasps the words out, an indication of his effect on me, but I don’t sound like I’m choking, so that’s good. God, what is wrong with me? Why am I reacting like this? I’d chalk it up to being tired from the drive, but I stayed with Brian and Jenna for a couple of days before coming down here, and it’s only a few hours from their house to Walla Walla.
He laughs, throwing back his head like I just told a great joke. My other eyebrow raises to join the first. What the hell?
He calms down and leans his forearms on the the table, his fingers spinning his glass by the stem. “No, I suppose you didn’t. Usually when a woman doesn’t want a man to join her, she says the seat is taken even if it isn’t. At least in my experience.”
“You get rejected a lot?”
He laughs again, though not as much as before. “Not especially, no.”
I nod. Not surprising. With his smooth confidence, it’s hard to deny him what he wants. “You could’ve wanted the chair for another table, though. In which case it would be rude of me to say it’s taken when it clearly isn’t and deprive you of a needed chair.”
He gives a pointed glance around the nearly empty space. When his gaze returns to me, he raises an eyebrow and takes a drink of his wine.
“Fine. Point taken.”
“Would you like me to leave you alone?” The smile has fallen from his face, his gaze still intent, but sincere.
I drop my eyes to consider that for a moment, toying with my glass. Do I want him to leave me alone? The way he flusters me with just his presence alone makes me think I should send him packing, my sense of self-preservation strong. The same smooth confidence that makes him hard to deny has my senses on high alert. Pierce was smooth and confident at first, too. After his betrayal, I haven’t been interested in guys or relationships. But something about this man makes me want to see where tonight could go. There’s no harm in sharing a table with an attractive man while we each drink some wine, is there? What’s the worst that could happen?

Chris held the restaurant door open for Megan. It was after two on a Sunday and the usual lunch crowd had cleared, so they got a table right away. He’d opted for Fire, the fancy pizza place. He didn’t know what was expected for a date on a Sunday afternoon. Megan was in jeans and he wore shorts, so a really upscale place didn’t seem like a good choice. He’d been here a couple of times and the food was good.
Once they’d ordered their pizza and the waitress had gone, Chris fidgeted a little, tapping his fingers on the table.
Megan studied him over the top of her glass. “Nervous?”
He stopped his hands through sheer force of will. “Nope. Why?” He managed to keep his voice casual. Good.
A grin spread across Megan’s face. “You’re bouncing your leg like crazy.”
Shit. He stopped that too. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” That casual tone he’d managed before? Nope, gone now. He was such a bad liar sometimes. Megan just laughed at him and he smiled. “Fine. I don’t take girls out very often.”
“How often is not very often?” Megan’s tone was dry, and her lips twitched with suppressed laughter. He appreciated that she was trying not to laugh in his face, even though part of him was kind of annoyed that she found it so amusing that he was flustered. He didn’t get flustered with girls, dammit. But he didn’t date girls either.
He screwed up his face like he was deep in thought. “Hmm. About never.”
Megan lost her fight with her laughter and let it out. She didn’t hold back when she laughed—no simpering giggles like so many girls used when they flirted with him.
Her laughter died down and she studied him again, the humor now gone from her face. “So, this is a date.”
He nodded and took a drink of his soda, wondering where she was going with this. Hadn’t they established this morning that this was a date?
“Does that mean we’re dating?”
He shrugged. “What would that mean, exactly?”
“Don’t worry, you don’t have to take me out to eat all the time or anything.” She flashed him a big grin and he smiled back. “But no fucking anyone else while we’re together. If you want to end it, have the balls to end it with me before you hook up with another chick.”
It was his turn to study her face. The waitress showed up then with their food. What impeccable timing. He waited for her to leave before he returned his attention to Megan. “Sounds fair. And it goes both ways.”
“Of course.” She maintained eye contact, her brown eyes holding his like she was trying to see inside him without giving anything away. Finally she flashed her smile again and got a slice of pizza.
Their conversation relaxed after that. She seemed satisfied with his answers about their relationship, such as it was. Relationship. That was a loaded word. Their … shit. He couldn’t come up with anything better than relationship. In any case, he was happy she didn’t push for more than he was able to give. Exclusivity didn’t seem like too big of a deal. Especially since he hadn’t wanted anyone else since he’d met her.
