A book slapped into his chest, and he grabbed it reflexively.
Layla stood in front of him, brown eyes flashing. “Here. There’s only one copy. I’ll see if I can get it from the public library or buy it somewhere.”
“Uh, okay.” He pulled the book away from his chest and glanced down at it. “Is this a good translation? Wouldn’t it be easier if we got the same one? If you’re going to buy it, I can buy it too.”
She rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest, which pushed her breasts up more, framing her cleavage above her shirt and between the sides of her open jacket. “Eyes up here, jackass.”
His eyes snapped to her face, and he had to fight the urge to turn sheepish. He hadn’t meant to check her out like that, but much better to make it seem deliberate since he was trying to push her buttons.
“What difference does it make if we get the same edition. Are you even going to read the book?”
He took a sharp turn toward anger again, but fought back toward amusement. If she wanted to assume he was a dumb jock and a horny asshole, then let her. Letting his eyes wander over her again, his eyelids heavy, he leaned against the bookshelves, rubbing his thumb along his lower lip. “I’d be open to private tutoring.”
Another eye roll from her, this one so hard that he almost worried she’d get stuck like that. He worked hard to suppress his smile, keeping it to the level of flirty and sexy that worked like a charm on most women, but he knew would infuriate this one more.
“Puh-lease.”
Yup.
“I have better things to do than teach you to read while you ogle my chest for the millionth time.”
His jaw clenched at her insult. Normally he didn’t give a shit if people assumed he wasn’t smart, but from her it pissed him off for some reason. He forced himself to relax, raking his eyes over her once more.
“You misunderstand my meaning. I was offering the private tutoring to you. Help you learn to loosen up.”
She gasped, taking a tiny step back, her mouth open in shock. That sound, the way her lips parted, had a thousand dirty thoughts flooding his mind and his blood rushing south. But in an instant she recovered, her eyes narrowing. He could tell she was trying to think of a suitable comeback. When nothing came, she let out a low growl and pushed past him, her pointy elbow making contact with the tender spot below his ribcage on her way past.
He waited until she got to the end of the row of shelves before calling after her, “So I’ll see you tomorrow to plan out our project?”

With a quick squeeze of his ass, she let him go, hopping up on the counter to watch him make the cookies, reaching across to stick her finger in the bowl to sneak a taste once he’d gotten all the ingredients mixed.
Narrowing his eyes, he pointed at her with the spoon. “Watch it. I might have to punish you for that.”
“Oh, are you going to spank me?”
He chuckled, low and growly, shaking his head. “Uh-uh. I was thinking more like a thorough tongue-lashing.”
She shivered, rubbing her thighs together. Then she leaned forward deliberately, her shirt gaping to tease him with a glimpse of her breasts, and she scooped up as much dough as she could on her index finger before bringing it to her mouth, licking it from palm to tip before sticking it in her mouth and sucking.
And the semi he’d been sporting since she got there turned into a raging hard-on.
He let out a groan, and she smiled around her finger, sucking on it and drawing it out from between her lips with a pop.
“I think I can get behind a tongue-lashing.”
“Coming right up.” Reaching down, he adjusted himself, her eyes zeroing in on his actions, her tongue darting out to lick her lips. “But you’ll have to wait until I get the first batch of cookies in the oven.”
“So mean. Making me wait like this.”
He laughed, enjoying the verbal foreplay as much as the physical kind. The cookies were irregular in size, but he couldn’t care less right now, his normal desire for precision swamped by his desire for her. All he cared about was feeling her thighs around his head, her lips around his cock, her pussy gripping him as she came. Fuck the damn cookies. The only reason he went through with it was because he knew she was suffering as much as he was, maybe more, and the anticipation only heightened the release when it came.

Excerpt
Soon, they were both involved in the game, throwing their whole bodies into turns, elbowing each other on accident, then on purpose, laughing and dueling for position. Since he was bigger and heavier, he won more often than not, but Elena knew how to use her sharp little elbows to her advantage, probably the result of growing up with a younger brother. He didn’t have a sister, but he had friends who did, and some of their older sisters were just as rough as he was on his little brother. Clearly, Elena fell into that category of older sister.
After one elbow contest where Elena was losing, both with her elbow, and her narrow lead on screen, she hopped up and sat down on his lap, knocking the controller out of his hands, making his character veer off course and crash. She braced her feet on the coffee table, pushing back to smash him as far into the couch as she could, pushing the coffee table away as she did so.
Wrapping his arms around her, he caught her before she could fall off his lap, trapping her against his chest, pulling her back, and rolling sideways so he pinned her on the couch. She laughed, squirming under him, and tossed aside the controller, blowing out a breath to try to dislodge the ends of her ponytail caught in her mouth.
She slapped his tricep lightly. “Move your arm! I can’t believe you made me crash!”
He laughed, moving his arm, but brushing the hair off her face before she could. Her laughter died, and she stilled under him, as though she suddenly realized how she was laying, pinned under him.
His breath caught at the look on her face, equal parts memory and desire as her eyes flitted over his features and settled on his lips. “You made me crash first.”
Her eyes went back to his, and her smile was dazzling, finally reaching her eyes and driving out the perpetual sadness. “I was just trying to win.”
Now his gaze settled on her lips, lush and red, still smiling, though less widely now. He remembered the taste of those lips. Had been wanting to taste them again ever since.
Slowly, he lowered his head to hers, giving her plenty of time to turn away if she wanted. But she didn’t. Instead, she closed the distance, fastening her mouth to his, her tongue plunging into his mouth.

I’m 22,000 words into Book 6 of the Players of Marycliff University series, and things aren’t going that well with it right now. I’d’ve usually gotten about 4000 words into my weekly 10,000 word goal by now, but I haven’t even managed 1000 words this week.
But it’s not the book’s fault.
No, I know what should happen next, but the words aren’t coming. Because every time I dip into my brain, into the place where I think about these things, other thoughts keep coming up.
My life—my real life, my non-bookworld life—has been, shall we say, complicated for a while now. In reality, I’ve spent most of the last two years in survival mode. Writing and publishing has been my escape from the difficulties and complications I experience on a daily basis. And so, I don’t often discuss my real life, though it has come up a time or two in my Facebook reader group, I’ve left out a lot of the details.
But part of this whole author gig, especially as an indie, is making yourself available for your readers. Now, I don’t believe that means an author needs to spill out all the intimate details of their life all the time. But it adds dimension to the author as a person when they allow glimpses into their day-to-day existence.
I’m married and have two little kids, a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son. My husband, for convenience let’s call him Mr. M, is disabled. He has been unable to work since July, 2015. We were fortunate that he got approved for Social Security Disability last spring, though we are still fighting with the long term disability insurance that was offered as part of his benefits package at his last job.
He’s been steadily getting worse since then. He has Mollaret’s Meningitis, which began as a recurrent thing, but now never goes away entirely. He suffers headaches and neck pain daily, and every so often it gets worse. He now also has Functional Neurological Disorder and experiences seizures and loss of consciousness multiple times a day, as well as muscle weakness and difficulty walking. His memory and speech grow steadily worse, he falls daily, and I spend a lot of my time juggling taking care of the kids and helping him off the floor and to the couch.
In addition to all of this, he also has a long history of multiple head traumas. Enough to make him a candidate for CTE. There’s no way to diagnose it until a postmortem neuropathology report is done, but his symptoms and the progression fits with what’s known. Maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s only the chronic meningitis responsible for his decline. But I can’t ignore the progressions described here and here.
Usually I make jokes and move on. Or I get mad about the situation and yell at him for falling down again. (It’s a coping mechanism. I know he can’t help it, and he knows I’m just reacting and that I’m not actually mad at him. We joke about that and laugh it off.) He’s been largely homebound for several months. It’s been over a year since the last time he drove. I won’t take him many places because the risk of him falling at the park or in the grocery store is too great.
So today we ordered him a wheelchair.
Intellectually, I know this is a good thing. It will allow him to participate in life more. Get out of the house. If he loses consciousness or has a seizure in the wheelchair, he has a seatbelt and won’t fall. He also won’t exhaust himself walking around, which makes him less likely to have an episode out of the house.
But this feels like a no going back kind of turning point. It’s a false turning point, since this is just the next step in the progression, but it feels like one all the same. And I can’t joke about it or armor myself with anger. No, instead I’m just sad.
And sadness doesn’t lend itself to writing lighthearted romances.
I will get back to writing. I’ll muscle through. But for now I’m accepting that sometimes I need to just be sad. And that’s okay.

Last year I took part in an anthology called Because Beards. Twenty-one authors, including myself, collaborated to put this out with all proceeds being donated to the Movember Foundation. It was a fun opportunity, and it afforded me the chance to write a little prequel for Matt and Hannah, who you get to know in Managed Hearts. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective, short stories and I don’t get along very well. What was supposed to be between 5000 and 12000 words ended up being 23000 by the time I was done. So, I chopped the story off at the 8000 word mark and put that in the anthology.
The three month duration of the anthology has now expired, and I can release the story on my own in full.
And so, now you can read how Matt and Hannah originally met. It’s only $.99 for a limited time, so grab it while it’s on sale!
Summer vacation, a hot surfer, and sexy times—what more could you ask for?

Hannah Glover spends the summer before her senior year of high school with her best friend’s family in Westport, Washington. One fateful day on the beach, she meets Matt Schwartz, a sexy surf instructor who catches her eye and sends electricity zinging through her body.
The prequel to Matt and Hannah’s story in Managed Hearts, this sweet and sexy story of firsts originally appeared in the anthology Because Beards. Now available as a standalone novella, read the full story of Matt and Hannah’s first summer together.

He greeted her with a smile and a kiss, his fingers sliding under her tank top. She wrapped her arms around his neck, losing herself in the pressure of his lips on hers and his tongue sweeping into her mouth to slide against her own. It was amazing how quickly she’d gotten used to this level of physical intimacy, but she had no complaints.
A growl rumbled in Matt’s chest.
Nope. No complaints whatsoever.
He pulled back, his hands still on her hips. “Mmm. It’s good to see you too. But we shouldn’t do much more of that in the parking lot. Otherwise, I might not be able to stop.”
Hannah’s cheeks heated, but she smiled at him. “Oh, really? Well, then, we better get somewhere else.”
He raised an eyebrow at her, but she just laughed and stepped away from him, reaching for the handle of the passenger door.
His hand covered hers on the handle. “Hey. That’s my job.”
She pulled her hand back, giving him another smile, and he pulled the door open for her. Stuffing her bag behind the seat like usual, she climbed in. They’d given up the pretense of surf lessons after the second day, but she still brought along a towel and a bathing suit in case they decided to go play in the water at some point.
Matt climbed in on his side and started the truck. “So, what do you want to do today?”
Hannah shrugged. “I don’t care. I just want to spend time with you.”
Matt’s nostrils flared as he sucked in a breath and his eyes grew heated. “That sounds perfect to me.” He pulled out of the parking spot and maneuvered his way onto the main road, taking them toward town.
When he turned onto a back highway surrounded by dense trees going away from town and the beaches they’d been to the last few days, Hannah turned to look at him. “Where are we going?”
He glanced at her, flipping on his turn signal and slowing to make a right turn onto a smaller road. “My house. Is that okay?”
Hannah looked around some more. The trees gave way to driveways here and there. “Sure. That’s fine.” She swallowed, pausing. “Um, will anyone else be home?”
He shook his head and pulled into a driveway. “No. My dad’s working the swing shift at the harbor, and my mom has book club tonight. She’ll be gone for hours.” He pulled into a graveled area with weeds poking up through the rocks off to one side of the driveway in front of a slate blue one-story house. The yard was bordered by a variety of trees, all varying shades of green. This whole area was so green and lush, much different from the arid Columbia River Valley area where Hannah lived. She couldn’t get enough of the green.
Matt killed the engine. “I thought we could watch a movie and hang out. Sound okay?”
“Sounds great.”
Matt smiled, his neutral face dissolving into happiness at her answer. “Great.”
He pushed his door open and Hannah did the same, hopping down and retrieving her bag. Matt met her at the front of the pickup, leading her by the hand up the two steps onto the little wooden porch that covered the front door. After unlocking the door, he pushed it open, dragging her in behind him. She barely had time to register the contents of the living room before he’d spun her around and pushed her against the door, his hands cradling her cheeks to hold her steady for his onslaught. She clung to his shoulders, her hands gripping his shirt as he devoured her mouth, pressing her back into the door with the full length of his body against hers.

Jamie and Claire from Outlander
You’ve done it.
You know you have.
You get sucked into a book and fall in love with the world, with the characters, with the hero. You’re sad when the book is over because you feel like you’ve lost your friends.
And then you meet someone who’s read the same book (or harass your friends until they read it too), and you discuss these people like they’re real. Just like you talk about your mom or your brother or your best friend from college (unless you’re talking to your best friend from college, but, you know, when you’re talking to someone else).
For a writer it’s even more intense. When writers talk about our characters, we talk about getting to know them, learning about them, letting the characters lead the way through the story. We talk about characters being uncooperative and not doing what we planned for them. They come to us fully formed and we have to figure out who they are, how they act, and what makes them tick. (At least that’s how my characters are, especially the main characters. For example, Lance from my book Summer Fling was originally going to be named Connor. But then he was like, “Hey! My name is Lance, not Connor.” And that was that.)
A few months ago my friend Leslie MacAdam and I were chatting about one of her books (and her books are awesome, so you totally need to check them out after you’ve gotten your fill of mine), specifically the characters. She commented that she loved it that I acted like her characters were real too.
I told her that it’s because they are real.
I know, that sounds like the men in white coats need to come take me to the pretty white room with squishy walls where they give me a special jacket that lets me hug myself.
I know that they’re not real in the sense that we could take a road trip and go visit them, stay in their guest rooms, and eat their food. Of course fictional characters aren’t real like that.
But they exist in our collective consciousness. We all know and love Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Or Jamie and Claire. Or Christian and Anastasia. Or fill in your favorite characters. We, as readers, give them life.
It’s sort of like the Velveteen Rabbit. A toy becomes real when it’s loved enough.
And so does a fictional character.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

Genital Euphemisms
Any time I read silly euphemisms for genitals in a novel, I always think of Ms. Perky in 10 Things I Hate About You and Reginald’s quivering member. (Side note, randomly looking for different words is a real thing for writers, though I don’t usually shout to a secretary like Ms. Perky. I look at thesaurus.com. And the word thesaurus still sounds like a type of dinosaur to me after all these years. But I digress.)
As you might guess, I’m not a fan of the term member. Or manhood. Or many others that I’ve seen, even in recently published books. I just don’t get it. Why use rod or manhood or (I saw this one today) man flesh? Snort. I mean, I get that anatomical terms are not sexy (they’re really not). They’re useful for professional-type discussions of anatomy, but they have no place in dirty talk or trying to capture feelings of arousal, either in yourself, your partner, or a fictional character. No one feels sexy talking about vaginas and penises.
But some of these euphemisms are decidedly unsexy too. (Man flesh? I mean, c’mon.) Not only that, but no one thinks about anyone’s genitals in these terms. There are four approaches people in general (at least in my experience) use with genitals:
Proper anatomical terms
Common slang (i.e. dick, pussy, cock, etc)
Silly or juvenile slang (hooha, willy, peepee)
Avoid using any term at all
I’ve seen the silly slang in books, usually used for comedic effect. Julia Kent does this in her Random Acts of Crazy series, and Helena Hunting has a running beaver joke in Pucked. And I’ve seen avoidance used to great effect, usually in the more sensual, less graphic types of books.
The euphemisms specific to romance novels kill me, though. Here are some of my favorites. I’ve organized them by gender for ease of reference (because you know you’ll need to later, right? Right. Ha.) This is by no means comprehensive.
Boy parts (see what I did there?):
I saw this used in all seriousness in a book I read recently (no, I will not tell you which one). Like, a guy referred to his dick as his manhood. In dialogue. With the girl. For reals? I’ve never heard a guy use the term manhood without laughing immediately after.
Not terrible, but not great. I mean, it can work if you’re using it as a dirty joke, but again, never heard a guy call it this.
Man flesh. Seriously.
I saw this one used in a book and the guy, in his POV, narrated putting on a condom, and called it his “fully-sheathed member” or something like that. OMG, no. Just no. Who says that? No one! No one would ever say that!
Ugh. Yes, I guess it is an organ. A pipe organ, perhaps?
Girl parts (both internal and external):
Love button. This one kills me every time. It’s called a clitoris, or clit for short. It’s okay, you can say it. Does anyone think of it as their love button? Have you ever had to help an inexperienced guy find your love button (“Here’s my love button, babe.”)? I don’t think so. Funny story—I was talking about silly romance euphemisms with my husband one time in the car, and I mentioned this one. He laughed, and then our three-year-old daughter (who we didn’t realize was listening as closely as she was) piped up and said, “When you push the love button the love stick gets bigger!” I about died from laughing so hard. She had no idea what we were really talking about, but wanted to contribute to the conversation. (Note to self: little kids listen to everything that you ever say. Except the things you want them to listen to.)
See above.
I have never, ever, not once thought of my vagina as a sheath. I don’t even like to use the term “sheathed” for a condom covered cock (yay for alliteration), much less a vagina.
See above.
This one’s at least kind of poetic, and there is justification for it with flowers being used in art and literature as a yonic symbol (Georgia O’Keefe, I’m looking at you). Again, I think my main problem with it is that I don’t think anyone ever thinks about their vulva this way.
What about you? Do euphemisms for genitals in romance novels bother you? Which ones make you laugh the most?

Excerpt
He finished scraping the windows with a smile on his face, and when he got in he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her across the bench seat and into his kiss. It was a strange juxtaposition of hot and cold—his skin chilled from being outside, his mouth hot against hers, his fingers freezing as they teased under her sweater inside her unbuttoned coat, heat pooling between her thighs.
She broke away gasping. “Let’s go home.”
Lance smiled, a devilish glint in his eye, like he knew exactly why she wanted to go home. He probably did. They knew each other so well, even though they’d only met six months ago. No one knew her better than him, not even Megan.
Instead of scooting back to her side of the bench seat, she fished the lap belt for the middle out of the crack where it met the back, wanting to stay close to Lance. He glanced down at her before putting the car in reverse and maneuvering them out of the parking lot. “I love you.”
She lay her head on his shoulder, enjoying the feel of his muscles working as he turned the steering wheel hand over hand. “I love you, too.”
They didn’t speak on the twenty minute drive home. Abby wanted to ask about his family’s reactions to her leaving yesterday and now him leaving today, but fear of what they might’ve said kept her silent. She didn’t want any negativity to ruin their reunion, even if they hadn’t been apart long. It felt like it had been ages since they’d been together. So talk of families, both families, could wait until they were home and fully reunited.
She could tell Lance had the same idea when he parked his suitcase just inside their door, dropping his backpack next to it, and immediately went to her, his hands going to her hips, his mouth melding with hers. She hadn’t even gotten her coat off yet, and his hands slid inside it, moving over her back, down to her ass and up her back again, this time under her sweater, his hands still chilly against her bare skin.
Her hands made a similar path over him, first up his chest, then down, pulling his sweatshirt up at his sides until her hands encountered bare skin. He broke away first, pushing back from her, his eyes glinting. “Bedroom. Naked. Now.”

“Lance.” His name came out a gasp, and she felt him smile against her skin, but he didn’t let up. Instead, his hands moved to the button of her jeans, which he undid before she registered what he was doing. He tugged her pants down along with her panties, his hands now going to her ass, his fingers reaching between her thighs, teasing and stroking, but not where she wanted. She tried to widen her stance, but her jeans around her knees wouldn’t let her, and she whimpered her distress.
The low chuckle that came from Lance’s throat told her he knew exactly what he was doing. But he didn’t torture her for much longer. Wrapping his arms around her, he lay back, taking her with him onto the bed, rolling them so he was propped over her, kissing her mouth again, his hands caressing every inch of naked skin he could reach.
Abby kicked off her jeans, spreading her legs for him, sighing in relief when he rubbed her there at last, dipping inside her and spreading her wetness around her clit in lazy circles. Sometimes things started out slow and languid, but by the time they got naked, it turned into fierce, driving hunger. Not tonight. This was about connection and love, reassurance that they were still okay in spite of all the outside forces currently conspiring against them. One shining moment that Abby knew she would hold inside her to keep her grounded when things with her family got overwhelming. And they would. Soon.
