Whats on My TBR Shelf

Whats on My TBR Shelf

Plus a Giveaway

My to-be-read pile, of course, ever evolving. It could change by the time I get this entry back from my editor, so if you follow my Instagram page, Bookbub, or Goodreads where I share what Im reading, dont get mad if the list changes somewhat.

Lifes like that sometimes. And if I read a book when Im not in the mood for it, I probably wont like it. So, its really better for everyone this way.

Rescue on the Run, by Jaycee Bullard

This one caught my attention. Im reading it to see if its a comparable title for an idea I have. Might not, but either way it looks good.

Plus, we’ve got a baby in this one (not in my idea, but a child always keeps a suspense interesting).

Mountain Fugitive, by Lynette Eason

Again, when I was hunting for interesting material, this looked good and is for a possible comparable title (and now youre wondering what in the world Im up to, and I laugh because usually I dont even know).

Sweet and Swoony Romance

Sweet and Swoony Romance

A year in the making

A long time ago in a galaxy known as my office, I was sitting here minding my own business when… I got an instant message ping.

Now, I’m tempted to ignore it. (We’re honest here, right?) Because I was wicked behind in my schedule, pushing for a USA Today Bestseller list run, and frankly, burned out. But this message was from Jessie Gussman, whom I adore. So, I can’t just pretend I don’t see it until I have time later.

Who am I kidding, I never have time later.

So, I open the message and it’s a really long invite to join a group promotion.

Now, you don’t know this, but I’ve kind of sworn off of most group deals (multi-author collections and series). Unless I’m really into it or you catch me at just the right moment, I probably won’t do it. Group projects take a LOT out of this introvert. Even online.

But… Jessie!

Like I said, I adore her. She invited me into this group of 100 authors. Seriously, that’s a lot of authors. We all had to write novellas.

Friday Fiction – What am I reading?

Friday Fiction – What am I reading?

Bookers on the Rocks by Chautona Havig

I just finished Bookers on the Rocks by Chautona Havig. It’s part of the Independence Island series. So, first things first, I love Chautona and her writing, so I knew going in that I was going to like the book.

But get this… I didn’t love the heroine. I did, however, love the book.

A writer has to be pretty amazing if you can dislike a main character and still read the whole book. Part of it was that I love Ross (the hero). He was an absolute gem, and I was cheering for him the whole time. He quietly did things, and yeah he didn’t see things right in front of his face… but that is literally every guy (and child) I’ve ever known. Every last one of them.

I’m just going to say that I think Tessa was super harsh with him and like the grace we receive from above, she was given grace ABUNDANTLY. More than she (or we) deserved. And…she was a little too much like me.

Let’s face it, I read books to get away from my own head.

A Day in the Life – Belle Fourche Style

A Day in the Life – Belle Fourche Style

Gideon Johlman’s day

Mornin’ to you. I’d tip my hat if you could see it. Kari asked me to stop by and tell you a little bit about my day. I’m Gideon Johlman, sheep Rancher. Second born son to Bodey and Margaret Johlman.

I rise pretty early, with the sun usually. Don’t take me long to get ready for the day. My clothes hang from a peg near my bed. They get washed once a week.

I go down to the dining room for my morning coffee and eat whatever Mrs. Eliza puts in front of me. I’m usually too concerned with getting out to the barn before Pa to care much about what food is on my plate, but I don’t recall ever being disappointed. The coffee is always hot, and that’s the most important part.

Out in the barn, the first thing I do in the spring is check for lambs. The ewes need special feed after they’ve lambed and it’s important they get it. Sometimes they don’t accept the lamb and I have to take it into the house. Ma pretends like she doesn’t like bottle feeding lambs, but I know better.

Victorian words that have fallen out of use – ticker

Since I am a romance author, you would probably assume the meaning for “ticker” to be heart. You’ve probably even used that word to mean heart before.

However, in the Victorian era, a ticker wasn’t a heart… it was a watch. Specifically, a pocket watch.

Since most people, even lower-class people, had some type of timekeeping device by the conclusion of the Victorian era (coinciding with the Industrial Revolution here in the US), this word was probably used fairly often. Now we have to specify analog vs. digital, but back then all watches, no matter the size would’ve given off a ticking sound.

Do you wear a watch? I have a watch that keeps track of all sorts of health data for me and though I lived without one for years, I find I can’t now. I don’t take my phone out to look at the time, I look at my ticker (even if it doesn’t tick).

Reblog – Inspirational Tuesday Quotable

Find my original post at Petticoats and Pistols blog.

“Does it bother you when I say her name? She was a part of my life for six months. A big part.”

“It isn’t so much that it bothers me, only that she seems to have left perfect shoes to fill, and I have… imperfect feet.”

I wrote this book back in 2017, An Ivy Tangles. It published April 28, 2017, just 5 days after my mother died and just two days after her funeral.

To say I was a mess for the release of that book was an understatement. However, in a lot of ways it was the biggest single release I’ve ever had. Many of my friends supported me by sharing the release in their newsletters. Not only that, but the book itself was one my readers had been waiting on for a long time. I’d hinted at Ivy and her sordid story for a few books before I wrote it.

While I was writing the story, my mother was going downhill. She was in a nursing home and had lung cancer. She hadn’t wanted surgery to remove the mass attacking her lung, so we knew the cancer would come back, but not when.
