L.D. Beyer is a reformed corporate drone who, after twenty-five years of missed family events, one day rose up and reclaimed his soul. Before he escaped, his career primarily involved relocating his family every few years—so much so that his children began to secretly suspect that he was really in the Witness Protection Program. He has yet to set the record straight.

L.D. Beyer is the author of three novels, two of which are part of the Matthew Richter Thriller Series. The first in the series, In Sheep’s Clothing, won a silver medal for best mystery/thriller eBook in the 2017 IPPY Book Awards. His third novel, The Devil’s Due, a standalone novel, is an historical thriller set in Ireland during the 1920’s.

When I wrote an Eye For An Eye, I had been researching my own ancestry both for personal reasons and for another book I was also working on. From a family history standpoint, I was able to verify family legend that my grandfather was indeed in the IRA, from about 1919 to the truce and treaty in 1922. I read everything I could on the IRA, and “The Troubles,” both history and fiction, covering not only the time my grandfather was a “volunteer” but also the decades that followed, up until the 1990s. Several years ago, I spent time in Limerick and in Dublin, researching my family tree and the IRA. I met with historians, folks at the military archives and two men and a woman at a “Republican” bookstore who still felt bitter about the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland twenty years earlier.

I began to wonder what happened to all those IRA soldiers after the Peace Accords. Certainly some went back to their families and their former lives and tried to pick up the pieces. And some, like I had found during my visit, wished to continue fighting if they could. But some I suspected, offered themselves up as Soldiers of Fortune, serving as mercenaries to the highest bidder.

What I like about Fogel is his personality. He is a terrorist certainly but he’s not driven by ideology, religion, money or the things that drive most radicals. He looks at life as a game and so long as he has the money in his pocket to buy a good Irish whiskey at the end of the day, he is content.
Terry Fogel is definitely a character I would like to see return in a later book.

That other book I was working on, by the way, is an historic thriller set in Ireland during the War for Independence (1919-1921) and is titled The Devil’s Due. I hope to release this over the summer.

But the reasons for reaching what appears to be a dead end vary and, for me at least, the solution does to. Often taking a break and doing something completely different—like going a walk, running an errand or even “sleeping on it”—will clear my mind and allow it to generate that creative spark and the words soon begin to flow again. It’s strange but the answer to what happens next will often pop into my mind at the oddest times—when I’m at the gym, when I’m in my car or even in the middle of the night—especially when I’m not actively thinking about my predicament. The second thing I would recommend is to take a break from writing and do some research. Often times, the block comes from not knowing the technical aspects of the scene, or the character’s profession, or the physical attributes of a particular location. The research often sparks a number of ideas. I jot them down one by one and in the process, something will click and I’ve found a path forward. It also helps, I think if you know where your story is going—not that it won’t take many twists and turns along the way. But having the big picture in mind allows you to put a problem scene to the side and to focus on a different scene or on a different character for a while. You can always come back to the road block later. Finally, when all else fails, take a deep breath, pour a glass of wine, sit back, take a sip relax and remember the medieval proverb that this too shall pass. Most importantly, save a glass for me!(less)
