Dear Friends,It was terrific to have Ron McCallum as my guest on Thursday Book Club last week and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation about his memoir Born at the Right Time. Congratulations to Minoti H who was the winner of the evening's giveaway, courtesy of Allen & Unwin. This week, Thursday Book Club is back as usual before we break for the school holidays, returning on 22 April. Thanks to everyone who entered the draw for tickets to my online interview with Debra Oswald on Wednesday event. The lucky winners were Noela A and Libby G. To anyone who missed out, you can still register for the event here. Courtesy of BAD Sydney Crimes Writers Festival, I'll be talking to Debra about her captivating new novel The Family Doctor.
There are lots of online events coming up over the next couple of weeks. Below you'll find links to a couple of sessions that particularly caught my eye. I've also provided details for a couple of writing competitions. Meanwhile, there's been continuing interest in starting a Thursday Book Club Writers group. Email me if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with each other.
Enjoy the holidays and see you back again on 22 April.

The extraordinary Ron McCallum is my guest this week
View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,What a drenched, wild week! My thoughts are with all those who have been caught in the flooding and hit by the storms and rising rivers. I'm delighted to welcome Professor Ron McCallum as my guest on Thursday Book Club this week. Senior Australian of the Year and the former Dean of Sydney University Law School, Ron has been blind from birth. Carrying with him a sense of wonder and excitement at the world, he's the sort of person that makes you smile even when, well, there's an unrelenting tempest outside. I hope you can zoom in at 8pm on Thursday to meet him and hear about his memoir Born at the Right Time. Here's the link to join us at Thursday Book Club: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343.
In the meantime, a clarification. As earlier revealed, on 31 March I will, indeed, be interviewing the wonderful Debra Oswald about her new novel, The Family Doctor , a gripping read about a doctor grappling with a moral dilemma: is it ever permissible to take a life in order to save another? The tickets for our online event, presented by BAD Sydney Crimes Writers Festival, are not free - as I promised last week - but are, instead, a bargain at $10. In exciting news, I have two free tickets to give away. To be in the draw, simply reply to this email with your book recommendation.

On stage and within reach
View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,It's hard to believe that this time last year, I was busily ordering up champagne for the launch of my novel, The Deceptions, and preparing for the many live events and festivals to which I'd been invited. Covid was something that belonged overseas - not here in Australia - until it suddenly hurtled its way into all our lives, wreaking havoc everywhere, perhaps most particularly on stage. Like a long winter that appears to be passing, live events are returning, theatres are reporting full houses and music is creeping back again. Last week, Sydney Writers' Festival launched its 2021 program: Within Reach. And what a program it is! So many great Australian writers will be appearing in person with international stars including Kazuo Ishiguro, Rachel Cusk and Judy Blume coming to us on screen. I'm delighted to be in conversation with Danielle Celermajer, author of Summertime: Reflections on a Vanishing Future and Jonica Newby, author of Beyond Climate Grief. You can find the full festival program here.

Save the date: Thursday Book Club guest author Prof Ron McCallum on 25 March
Dear Friends,At Thursday Book Club, we're all readers. There are writers amongst us as well - new writers and more established ones, too. A few members of Thursday Book Club have suggested starting an online writing group to talk about writing and to gain feedback from one another. If you'd like to be a member of the Thursday Book Club writing group (or know someone who would be keen) please let me know so I can link you up with other writers keen to be part of the group.
Over the past couple of weeks, I've been beset by deadlines that have left little time for my own writing and I've started to get twitchy with the need to get back to it. This week marks the return to my fictional world and already I can feel that buzz of relief and excitement (mixed with a little apprehension) that writing can bring.
I hope your week is going well and that, within it, you're able to find time for the creative work that most sustains you.

A long swim and a great book
View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,I spent the weekend reading the memoir of Professor Ron McCallum, Born at the Right Time (Allen & Unwin). What an inspiring, uplifting work it is! In essence, it's the story of how a man who lost his sight shortly after his birth became the first in his family to attend university and went on to become the Dean of Sydney University Law School and Senior Australian of the Year. It's also a love story: the story of his marriage to Professor Mary Crock, a leading expert in human rights and refugee law. It's a terrific read and I'm delighted to announce that on 25 March, Ron will be my guest on Thursday Book Club.
In our interview last week, Deborah Rodriguez (author of The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul) radiated energy and enthusiasm and curiosity and thoughtfulness as she spoke of a life spent in America, Afghanistan and Mexico. You can watch our interview here.
On Sunday, I competed in the Murray Rose Malabar Magic Ocean Swim and, for the first time ever, swam two and a half kilometres. This, I discovered, was a very long way - so long I wondered whether I might have misread the instructions and joined the five kilometre swim instead (I hadn't). I find ocean swimming in goggles a bit of an ordeal so decided to swim with a snorkel and mask instead, an unusual choice in such a competition. Such is my sometimes unreasonable confidence, I had a moment's pause when I discovered that, whilst permitted, the snorkel and mask would disqualify me from being awarded a prize. Readers, I won no prize - indeed, few were the swimmers who finished behind me - but, as I made my way towards those distant markers, it was the unfolding of the underwater world beneath me that kept me going.
I hope yours was a happy and restful weekend and that the week is unfolding well for you all.

Last last week, they left Sydney to visit them for a week, arriving just in time to spend a couple of hours together before the impending lockdown. That afternoon, they were on the road again, headed back for Sydney. They are robust, practical people and, as usual, will manage this latest disappointment with stoicism and equanimity – qualities so many of us have also had to find within us over the past year.My thoughts are with Melburnians in the wake of this latest lockdown. May books and films and music and the world of online culture sustain you during this time. I’d like to give a particular shout out to libraries and bookshops around the country who have kept us culturally and spiritually nourished during these buffeting times, allowing us, through books and online events, to travel in time and across closed borders to find adventure and comfort and sustenance.
Thanks to Geelong Regional Libraries, this Wednesday the internationally bestselling author, Deborah Rodriguez, will be joining me online from her home in Mexico to talk about intrigue in Morocco and her former life in Afghanistan. She has lots of stories to tell and I’d love it if you could join us for this free event.

"The Moroccan Daughter feels different for me. It could be because Morocco is one of my favorite places on earth, and I adore all the characters, especially Bea. I love stories about friendship and love and, in this case, forbidden love. My hope is when you read this book, you will fall in love with Morocco just as I have." - Deborah Rodriguez

Dear Friends,It was terrific to have Kirsty Everett as our guest on Thursday Book Club last week to celebrate the publication of her memoir, Honey Blood. She’s a debut author and was buzzing with excitement about having Honey Blood out in the world. Thursday Book Club was her very first book club appearance as an author and we all enjoyed her company immensely.
This summer I’ve been snorkelling in a gentle bay not far from where I live. The secret underwater world never ceases to amaze me and as I focus on the marine life that surrounds me - the stripeys and the stingrays and the blue gropers and sometimes even one of the resident turtles - my too busy mind finally stills.
That's when writing problems that have beset my week somehow seem to edge towards a solution and when I return to land once more, it’s often with a renewed sense of confidence in the work I have ahead of me. As the year bounds forward, I hope there is both stillness and energy in your own underwater - or above water - worlds and that the week ahead is a good one.NEWS Suzanne Leal in conversation with Deborah Rodriguez on 17 February presented online by Geelong Regional Libraries

Kirsty Everett author of Honey Blood is my guest on Thursday Book Club this week

Dear Friends,We had a terrific catch up at Thursday Book Club last week. It was great to see so many of our regulars and to get to know those of you who joined us for the first time. Thanks for all your book recommendations - it’s clear that this really was a summer for reading!Thursday Book Club is on as usual this week, but with an added surprise. Author Kirsty Everett will be joining us to talk about her new release, Honey Blood. Just zoom in as usual to Thursday Book Club to say hi to Kirsty and hear about her captivating book.
A memoir about surviving childhood cancer, Honey Blood is a book that dances with life and hope and wit and Kirsty’s fabulous observations of the world around her. I loved this passage about a visit to her aunt just after the then nine-year-old Kirsty had started chemotherapy:
I sat at the dining table, among the adults and cups of tea on saucers and Scotch Finger biscuits. Aunty Pat got me a whole can of Kirks lemonade, just for me, and poured it into a glass. Mum, having carefully wrapped my thirty or so tablets in plastic wrap before we left home, placed the pile of poison before me.Honey Blood is filled with wry, bittersweet moments like this. It’s a book that grabbed me and once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. I even had it open beside me while making fish cakes for dinner.
I stared out longingly at [my brothers] Brett and Matt, who were outside jumping on the trampoline. I was too weak to jump and I knew I’d soon be out of breath if I tried. Brett saw me watching and stuck his middle finger up at me while he leapt into the air. None of the grown ups saw.

Welcome back to Thursday Book Club
View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,And all of a sudden, it’s almost February! Hope you’ve managed to have a break over the summer and are feeling recharged. I’m so looking to seeing you at Thursday Book Club this week, our first for 2021.
For me, it’s been a quiet start to the new year. I raced to the end of 2020 then suddenly hit a wall. When 2021 arrived, I found, for the first time in a long time, that I couldn’t write. I simply felt empty. What if that’s it? I wondered. What if I have no more to write?
Ironically, my crisis of confidence coincided with a residency at Varuna -The National Writers’ House which I took as part of the Varuna Fellowship awarded to me for my new manuscript.
For those of you who don’t know it, Varuna is the most magical place. Hidden away in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, it’s the former house of writers Eleanor and Eric Dark whose son gifted it in 1989 to be used as a retreat for writers. Each week, five or six writers come to Varuna to write and meet and rejuvenate.
This time when I arrived at Varuna, I felt depleted by the year and panicked that, with all this time set aside to write, nothing would come. I turned up anyway. For the first couple of days, I didn’t push myself too hard. I got to know the other writers there with me, I swam, I walked. This was all very foreign to me. On other occasions when I’ve been to Varuna, I’ve written in a frenzy for 10 hours at a time. This time I simply couldn’t. So I didn’t.
After two or three days, the fog lifted and, to my great relief, I found I could write again. So I got to work, at first gently then with more vigour as I felt myself replenish. I hope you’ve managed to replenish in recent weeks, too.
I stayed at Varuna with two poets, Jo Lyons and Sassi Nuyum, both fascinating women who made my time there memorable. Sassi Nuyum is a performance poet whose work you can watch here. I’m delighted that Jo Lyons has allowed me to share with you one of her prose pieces, Sketch of a Man.
Jo read the piece to us on our third night at Varuna and it has stayed with me ever since.

Rather than zooming into Thursday Book Club as usual on 4 February, I’d like to invite you to register for my conversation with Kirsty, where we’ll be discussing her remarkable memoir, Honey Blood. For anyone in Sydney and Melbourne, please note that because Brisbane is one hour behind, the session will begin at 730pm.You can regist er here. Her new novel, The Moroccan Daughter, is a modern story of forbidden love set in North Africa. I’m delighted to be in conversation with Deborah Rodriguez in this free event presented by Geelong Regional Libraries. You can register here. Writing Corner Sketch of a Man by Jo Lyons Tellingly, there are few photos including both Dad and me. My baptism. A group shot at the beach where I’m a rudie-nudie sitting on the sand and Dad’s in budgie smugglers – not our finest hour. The picnic where we both rock our best seventies hair. A couple form a series: Baby Drinks Dad’s Beer.
He exists in outline. In photos. In objects, symbols of a life – his architectural plans, pencils, his books, his drawings, ties, dressing gown. In stories told to keep his memory – or my memories of him – alive. My scant memories, which may only stem from other people’s: half-remembered dream fragments. From this distance it’s hard to discern their truth.
I remember Mum taking me upstairs to the den to say goodnight. Dad lifted me to touch the ceiling – that giddy feeling of being raised by big hands while my little ones reach high. Sometimes he spun me around on his stool at his drafting table, or maybe drew pictures on my hand. There is the faint wisp of smoke, rough whiskers as he nuzzles my cheek or blows raspberries on my belly.
I remember sitting at the dining table, most siblings present, air heavy with tension. Someone wouldn’t eat their dinner or was naughty and got in trouble off Dad, and it was scary. But there are special baked dinner memories, and birthdays with cake that had a ballerina on top. Picnics at Cordeaux dam, going to Dad’s work Christmas parties, long car rides to family gatherings, running around parks. Pretending to be a princess and living in a castle with my family, happily ever after.
Our last shared photos are at my eldest sister’s wedding, group shots of our big family - the happy couple, my sisters a row of real-life princesses in Laura Ashley lace. Mum smiling, Dad gaunt but proud, his suit too big. A few people look down at me, the grumpy four-year-old flower girl chewing her fingernails.
In my mind the house quickly got quieter. Dad was in bed a lot and sometimes we were allowed to see him. Standing in the doorway to Mum and Dad’s bedroom, not sure what to do; you have to be quiet. Visitors came and I was shy.
Then I have a glimpse of me at home, sitting on the brown carpet in our dining room, my white-stockinged legs tucked under me, and I smooth my good black and white checked dress over my knees. I’m in a patch of warm sun; light streams through the window and catches on dust motes floating through the air. Sitting primly, basking in the feeling of a nice dress and polished shoes, being a big girl…though kind of uncomfortable. There’s a buzz of activity around me and I’m trying not to be in the way, not to be noticed by these strangers. I sit there waiting for my family to come home from church. I’m told it was overflowing with people wanting to say goodbye. ⌘ ⌘ ⌘
