View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,For the first time in days and days, sunlight has filtered through the window where I work. Perhaps summer will make its appearance on time after all!
It was terrific to welcome poet and editor, Michele Seminara, as my guest on Thursday Book Club last week. You can find out more about Michele's work on her website: https://micheleseminara.net.
Thursday Book Club is taking a break this week... so I can go out partying. BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival opens on Thursday and I'm excited to catch up with fellow writers and readers I haven't seen for ages. The festival runs until Sunday 5 December and I'll be back at Thursday Book Club next week (9 December) to tell you all about it. There's still time to book tickets for the festival and you can find the full program here.
I've got free passes to my session with Lyn Yeowart and Mark Brandi, Through The Eyes Of A Child, at 10.30am on Sunday at the State Library of NSW and also to my session with Barry Maitland, Anna Downes and Wendy Hughes, What Lies Below The Surface, that afternoon at 2pm (both sessions are live-streamed if you can't make it in person). To be in the draw, just reply to this email with a book recommendation.
Hope to see you at the festival this week - please do come up and say hi. NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION

CASE STUDY Graeme Macrae Burnet https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/case-study-9781922458155.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- A young woman who has been seeing controversial psychotherapist, Dr Braithwaite, takes her own life. Her sister senses the doctor may in some way be responsible. Taking on a new identity she intends to visit the doctor as a patient in order to uncover the truth. Taking place in the mid 1960s London where rigid social and class barriers are beginning to erode, this novel is a constant tug of war, not only between therapist and patient but between the narrator and the reader. A psychological mind bender, this one both taunts and teases. SHARING
Aunty Fay Muir & Sue Lawson
Illustrated by Leanne Mulgo Watson https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/sharing-9781925768749.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This is from the same team who have brought us the beautiful books in the Our Place sequence (Respect/Family) and it emphasises that "When we share, there is plenty for all." With a colour palette predominantly in greens, browns and blues, the striking and simple illustrations by Leanne Mulgo Watson have a great depth and expressiveness well suited to the pared down text. An excellent addition to the growing and admirable list from Magabala Books, perfect for any personal or library collection. Lindy Jones NEWS

Much-loved film critic, David Stratton, has a new book out: My Favourite Movies, published by Allen & Unwin. For those of you in Sydney, David Stratton will be in conversation with arts critic, Stephen Romei, at Gleebooks tomorrow night. You can book your tickets here.

Lyn Yeowart is the author of The Silent Listener, a gripping tale of religious bigotry and crime set in rural Victoria in the 1940s, 1960s and 1980s. The Silent Listener has been longlisted for the UK People's Book Prize and voting is open to the public. If you'd like to vote for The Silent Listener (or one of the other contenders) you can do so here.

This Thursday at 6.30pm, Gleebooks is hosting an online event to celebrate the publication of the book Seeking Asylum, with a panel of contributors telling their stories. It's a free event and you can register for it here.

WALK OF THE WHALES
Nick Bland
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/walk-of-the-whales-9781760509026.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- When the whales walk out of the ocean and into the cities and towns, some people are delighted, but others are not! As the whales take over the land and create a mess and a bother and people start to protest, it takes one small girl to ask why the whales left the water in the first place? Beautifully textured illustrations with many a witty detail (whales riding on bikes, reading whilst basking in the swimming pool, emptying pirates' chests full of gold to buy fish) and a salient message about not rubbishing your environment. A good book to share with pre-schoolers, or for new readers keen to read for themselves. Lindy Jones

MORE THAN I LOVE MY LIFEDavid Grossman
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/more-than-i-love-my-life-david-grossman-9781787332942.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Grossman's latest book is a tale of three women and the choice made by one that has serious ramifications for the other two. Vera is celebrating her 90th birthday with her daughter Nina and granddaughter Gili. Relations between all three, and with Gili's father Rafael, are strained and linked to a decision Vera made years ago in the former Yugoslavia. All four decide to film and chronicle Vera's life, which involves them travelling to the island of Goli Otok, where Vera was imprisoned by the Tito regime. Based on the true-life story of Eva Panic Nahir, Grossman gets under the skin of these characters; we feel both admiration and confusion at the decisions made by Vera, and also somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer power of the human spirit. BIG LOVEMegan Jacobson, Beck Feiner
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/big-love-9781760652890.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- A bold and vibrantly-coloured picture book, with a simple but loving message - no matter what is big in the world, a parent's love is larger! The text is rhythmic rather than rhyming, so it's quite lovely to read out loud. The illustrations are geometrically blocked out but uncluttered in design, so though there are many details on the 'big' pages to look at, they never feel crowded. A reassuring book to share with the little ones in your life, this should be a modern classic! Lindy
SOLACE IN THE TIME OF COVID

I find solace in reading biographies. Evenings with Wellington’s bio,Years of the Sword, were almost like dinner dates with duke himself. Weekends with the late Eddie Jaku’s biography, The Happiest Man on Earth, gave me a heightened appreciation for my fridge and couch. And the best life stories convey universal messages for how to live more authentically. Most importantly, we can look upstream, as we float down the river of time, and see we’re not so different from those that have come before us. Toby Roberts

PUFF PIECE
JOHN SAFRAN
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/puff-piece-9781760890155.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- With his trademark humour and wordsmithery, John Safran delivers another wholly enjoyable exposé, this time into the world of Big Tobacco behemoth, Philip Morris. As compelling as a thriller, I found myself reading this well beyond my body clock's recommended 'lights out'. The thing that has caught Safran's eye is Philip Morris' new product, IQOS - or HeatStick. As he follows different threads and tries to fathom exactly what this new product is - and why he seems much more concerned about it than nearly everyone else he speaks to - he also cleverly manages to thread his core preoccupations throughout the narrative: religion, race, ethics, and Scrabble.
In pondering why this reading experience is so enjoyable, I realise that what he is doing is a Safran documentary in word form, bringing his particular frequency and personality to the fore as he fossicks for the truth. Craig Kirchner

A CLOCK OF STARS: BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS FRANCESCA GIBBONS
CHRIS RIDDELL https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/clock-of-stars-beyond-the-mountains-2-9780008355128.do ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This is the follow-up to my favourite children's fantasy book from 2020 (A Clock of Stars: The Shadow Moth) - and it does not disappoint at all! It's the best part of a year after the events in The Shadow Moth and Imogen and Marie have almost given up being believed about their adventures in the lands beyond the door in the tree.
When their mother's insufferable boyfriend takes them to a hotel on the other side of the woodlands where the tree is, Imogen decides to sneak back and take photos to prove she isn't lying. Of course, things don't go to plan! Meanwhile on the other side, Miroslav is not enjoying himself as the new king of Yaroslav, the amoral Anneshka is seething with fury at being thwarted in her plans, and the forest witch Ochi is biding her own time before she gets what she wants… A wonderfully constructed fantasy, with brilliant plotting, imaginative settings and first-rate characters and creatures - I can't wait for the next instalment! View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,Like many of you, I've been working from home more than ever since last year. Now that my kids have gone back to school, this is the first time since June that I've had the house to myself. The pleasure of writing in solitude is something I'd almost forgotten. I hope you've been managing to get the right mix of company and solitude since things have started to open up again.
I'm really looking forward to having Graeme Friedman as my guest this week at Thursday Book Club. Graeme is a psychologist and author whose novel, The Fossil Artist, was shortlisted for the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prize. We'll be talking about his new novel, What The Boy Hears When The Girl Dreams. To join us, simply click on this link on Thursday at 8pm: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343.
NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION

TREASURE AND DIRT
Chris Hammer
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/treasure-and-dirt-9781760877606.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Ivan Lucic is rather surprisingly for a Sydney detective of his seniority, sent to investigate a murder in the opal mining town of Finnigans Gap. A miner was found crucified in his underground claim, but nothing is as straightforward as it seems. The town is verging on the edge of lawlessness, the young local policewoman charged with investigating the crime is out of her depth in more ways than one, there's a rather sinister messianic sect on the outskirts, and there is a billionaire mining magnate sniffing around. Lucic is hiding a few secrets himself… Another wonderfully convoluted and satisfying rural noir novel from Hammer, with a cast of colourful characters, moral dilemmas and twisty plotting. This is a standalone (though who knows? Maybe Lucic will turn up again, he certainly has more stories in him!) I think Hammer just gets better and better with each book he writes… Lindy

MY BROTHER BEN
Peter Carnavas https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/my-brother-ben-9780702263330.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Luke adores his big brother Ben, who can do anything and isn't afraid and is his best friend. Ben is adventurous and caring, particularly now Dad has left and Mum is tired from working all the time, and whilst the boys are almost polar opposites, what they do have in common is a dream. They want a boat so they can explore their local creek; Ben wants to go fishing in the fabled Pocket, and Luke wants to see all the birds. Luke has an affinity with a rescued magpie who stays around their house, and is a talented artist who likes to sketch what he sees. When the local council announces a competition to celebrate the area, and the prize is a boat, both boys decide to win it. But Ben has just started high school, and made a friend of the new girl on the street, and it seems he doesn't have the time for Luke anymore. Worse, it looks like he's sneaking out at night and Luke feels betrayed... This is a positively beautiful story that celebrates the bonds of brothers without being unrealistic, the way change can be upsetting but also enabling - and the joys of birdwatching! Carnavas' best book yet. Ages 9-12 Lindy

Dear Friends,It's been a rollercoaster of a literary year but as the levels of vaccinations rise, I've been allowing myself the quiet hope that writers' festivals and events are not too far away - including BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, which will take place from 2 to 5 December 2021. I'm a member of the board and we're all excited about the program. I'll look forward to sharing it with you soon.
In the meantime, I'm delighted to have author and screenwriter Gabriel Bergmoser as my guest on Thursday Book Club this week. His latest novel, The Inheritance, is a cracker as we follow the engaging but very dangerous Maggie as she manages to fight her way out of situations that would thwart anyone else. It's a great read. As well as writing for the screen and stage, Gabriel Bergmoser is also a YA writer and I loved following the hapless Nelson as he negotiates his way through life and loves in The True Colour of a Little White Lie. I hope you'll be able to join us on Thursday at 8pm. Here's the link: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343

Miles Allinson
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/in-moonland-9781925322927.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This is the new book from the award winning writer of Fever of Animals. There are three different stories – one taking place in present day Melbourne, the second set in India with the Bhagwan Rajneesh and third set in the not so distant future. The stories are linked: a man searches for answers in explaining his father’s suicide; the father joins the Bhagwan ashram searching for answers; and a daughter reaches out to her father. Allinson has a wonderful way of keeping the reader engaged but also making us work. There are no easy answers here — questions posed always seem just out of reach of being reconciled by the character asking them. Both political and personal, this makes Allinson a writer to keep an eye on. Greg Waldron

Dear Friends,When the much-lauded Korean writer, Hwang Sok-yong, came to Australia in 2019, I interviewed him about his work. Hwang Sok-yong is something of a celebrity in South Korea, not only for his literary work but also for his activism and, shortly after our interview, he was shortlisted for the 2019 Man Booker International Prize for his novel, At Dusk.
Meeting (the extremely charismatic) Hwang Sok-yong piqued my interest in Korean literature and over the past couple of weeks I've been immersed in Eugenia Kim's sweeping historical novel, The Calligrapher's Daughter, which spans the momentous period of Korean history from 1910, when Japan took control of Korea, until the end of World War II. Eugenia Kim was born in America to Korean parents, whose story inspired The Calligrapher's Daughter. At 6.30pm on 23 September, I'll be interviewing Eugenia Kim for the Korean Book Club, presented by the Korean Cultural Centre. It's a free event and you don't need to have read The Calligrapher's Daughter to join us. Afterwards, stay online join us at Thursday Book Club when scriptwriter and novelist Gabriel Bergmoser will be joining us.

NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION
Mayflies by
Andrew O'Hagan
(Not strictly a new release, but newly released in paperback form - and one of Lindy Jones' favourites) https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/mayflies-9780571273713.do ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This is undoubtedly one of my favourite books of the year - it's joyous and heartrending and funny and compassionate - and it even made me appreciate lads being lads! James has little in the way of family life, and spends his time outside of school hanging around with friends, particularly the charismatic and lively Tully, who is a couple of years older. Tully is the centre of everything in his circle, but like most of the young men in their working class Scottish town, has followed his father into factory work - which in 1986 in Thatcher's Britain is increasingly threatened.
When Tully, James and a number of other friends decide to go to Manchester for a weekend music festival, it is to be the highlight of their youth; but also the moment when their friendships will change and their futures deviate from the expected paths. All of which is shown, when the later part of the novel unfolds, when decades later James gets a phone call from Tully that he has been expecting - and dreading. An intensely moving celebration of male friendship in a society which places great value on mateship but not on men's emotions, and how anything is possible if your friends are there... Lindy Jones

MANDIE AND THE FOREIGN SPIES
by Lois Gladys Leppard https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/the-mandie-collection-volume-3-9780764205934.do
Mandie has arrived in England after being on a ship for weeks and when she arrives she discovers there is an unsigned telegram at the post office. No one knows where it comes from or who wrote it. When they arrive at the Majestic Hotel there are some flowers saying: “Welcome, Amanda, to England”. There was no name on this one as well. When Jonathan, a friend of Mandie, starts talking to three young sisters that seem to follow them everywhere, Mandie starts to get suspicious. Then there is the woman who had followed them on the ship and is following them again. What was going on? Was it a mystery, adventure or danger in disguise. I love it because it is full of mystery and suspense as well as love, joy and kindness. I would rate it 10 out of 10.
Mia, 9

Archie Roach and me
View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,The NSW Premier's History Awards were announced on Friday. Singer, songwriter Archie Roach won the Young People's History Prize for his memoir Tell Me Why for Young Adults. Archie Roach first came to public attention with his haunting song, Took The Children Away, and I've been a fan for years. Imagine my delight, then, not only to be part of a (pre-Covid) writers' festival he was headlining but also to find myself on the table beside him at the hotel breakfast buffet the following morning. Leave him alone, I told myself, let him eat his breakfast in peace...but I didn't. Instead, balancing my (overladen) plate on the way back to my table I gushed out my admiration. Whatever I said must have been coherent - perhaps even memorable - for when I followed him on Twitter, he sent me a personal message asking how I was. I responded with enthusiasm telling him about my day and he told me about his and so we continued to converse. Until a few days later when I received word that Archie Roach's Twitter account had been hacked and any messages should be ignored.
All this to say, congratulations Archie Roach!

ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Ruth McIver's novel won the Richell Prize 2018 for emerging writers and the writing is of such quality and depth. The scenario is of a young journalist revisiting a traumatic part of her life for an article she's been convinced by her editor to write. The details surrounding this dark part of her life when, as a teenager, she was in the fold with wayward friends in a fug of drugs, bad sex and heavy metal that ended in a climactic murder that scandalised the nation. The media at the time spun stories of satanism and the novel is an unsettling journey towards knowing what really happened on that night. Overall, this novel masterfully manages to convey a feeling of danger, menace and unease, as if we are reading a gruesome true-life suburban tragedy. Craig

HEROES OF THE SECRET UNDERGROUND
by Susanne Gervay
Heroes of the Secret Underground is about a little girl called Louie. She lives with her grandparents and brothers in a hotel that her grandparents own. One day when Louie has finished all her work she decides to go to the top of tower in the backyard of the hotel. In there she finds a necklace with a rose gold locket. Not knowing whose it is, she decides to keep it safe. She doesn't know it at first but the locket was actually more then just a locket. It was sort of a time machine and it took her back to 1944, a time when World War Two was happening. That's when Louie discovers that her grandparents have secrets of their own. If you like thrillers filled with drama, you'll really enjoy this book. Miranda, 10 For any young readers in lockdown (or out of lockdown) with a book to recommend, please email me a short review (100 - 150 words) to be included in the For Kids By Kids part of the newsletter. All entries will go into the raffle for a prize to be drawn on 16 September.

Meredith Jaffe is my guest this week on Thursday Book Club!
View this email in your browser
Dear Friends,I'm hoping you'll be able to join me at Thursday Book Club this week when I'll be chatting to our guest Meredith Jaffé.
Meredith is the artistic director of Storyfest, a writers and readers festival held in June this year in Ulladulla on the south coast of NSW. With a terrific line up, it was a small window of opportunity, as it turned out, in this year of lockdowns. I'm so looking forward to a return to days of crowded festivals filled with writers and readers! As well as her work with Storyfest, Meredith is also the author of four novels, most recently The Dressmakers of Yarrandarrah Prison , the feel-good story of a group of male inmates who form part of a prison sewing circle. Meredith is a lot of fun and I think you'll enjoy our conversation. Meredith is happy to answer your questions and we'll be giving away a copy of The Dressmakers of Yarrandarrah Prison.
This week's new release recommendation by Abbey's bookseller, Lindy Jones, is The Shut-Ins by Katherine Brabon, a novel about connecting in times of solitude.
I'd also like to welcome Mia, a new reviewer to our weekly feature, By Kids For Kids. Mia is nine years old and, it seems, has been reading furiously during lockdown. Scroll down to read her terrific review of The Lost Twin (Book 1 in the Scarlet & Ivy series) by Sophie Cleverly.
For any young readers in lockdown (or out of lockdown) with a book to recommend, please email me a short review (100 - 150 words) to be included in our new For Kids By Kids feature. All entries will go into the raffle for a prize to be drawn on 16 September.
Hope to see you at Thursday Book Club this week. Here's the link to join us: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343

THE SHUT INS

ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Mai has recently married a salaryman and realises she will never be the perfect wife he requires, or the mother of the grandchildren her parents expect. When she meets the mother of an old schoolfriend, she learns that Hikaru has become a recluse who will not leave his room nor interact with anyone physically - a hikikomori.
At his mother's request, she writes letters to him, trying to coax him back into the world. At the same time she is feeling less visible herself... Between the narratives of Mai and Hikaru are interludes from a westerner in Japan exploring ideas of self, solitude, restlessness and loneliness. This is a mesmerising novel, carefully crafted and quite haunting, something to read slowly and thoughtfully. Lindy

THE LOST TWIN
SCARLET & IVY (Book 1)
by
Sophie Cleverly https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/scarlet-and-ivy-1-scarlet-and-ivy-the-lost-twin.do
Scarlet and Ivy are mirror twins. They are almost the same except Scarlet is bold and brave whereas Ivy is shy and quiet. When Scarlet goes to Rookwood School she mysteriously dies of a bad cold. Ivy was sent to live with Aunt Phoebe. Then one day Miss Fox came and collected Ivy to take her to Rookwood. When they arrived Miss Fox made Ivy replace Scarlet with the excuse of not wanting the girls to worry about where Scarlet might have gone. Slowly Ivy discovers Miss Fox has something to do with the mystery of where her sister is.
I think The Lost Twin is a very good book because it is intriguing and there is suspense on every page. I would rate it 10/10.

NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION

EMPIRES by Nick Earls https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/empires-9781760898700.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- I have been an ardent fan of Nick Earls for years. His early books were about young men bumbling through the concepts of being responsible grown-ups; then he wrote of older men still trying to make sense of being adults. Good-natured humour and a fondness for his characters ran through his writing, and compassion for their situations.
In this new novel, his style has matured further, and the structure is less straightforward (something I would credit to his excellent set of recent novellas that is collectively known as the Wisdom Tree series). It goes back and forth across two centuries, starting with Mike, a middle-aged Australian in Alaska who is attempting to remake his life after a disastrous injury has stopped him from doing the one thing he was good at, and earnt money through; that and another personal tragedy have caused him to stop and take stock of himself. As a trainee real estate agent, his first client is Ellen, a former teacher whose late husband Walter was descended from old money, and listens to her stories of their life together.
The novel tracks back forty years earlier to when Michael's family moved to London for his father's work; then to earlier in the century following an episode of Walter's father's life; then back to Vienna under siege in 1809, before coming back to Mike and the year after he met Ellen. It is a novel of connections, and mistakes, and coming to an understanding and acceptance of the past.
There's a lot happening under the surface of this fine novel, and the characters are all handled with great sympathy. A very satisfying and thoughtful novel indeed. Lindy Jones

WHO KILLED DARIUS DRAKE?
by Rodman Philbrick
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/who-killed-darius-drake.do
Lockdown is hard. Once you have finished your work, you might be tempted to watch movies for the rest of the day. But why not read a book? It’s basically a movie in your head and your parents won’t get mad at you for being on screens for too long. If you agree with me, I suggest reading Who Killed Darius Drake?
Who Killed Darius Drake? is about a boy who receives a note written in blood saying “who killed Darius Drake?” But Darius was not dead!! He was well alive. Darius is a redhead and the school nerd. His parents died in a car crash so he is an orphan but there is more to it. His pop went searching for the Dunbar diamonds but when he causes trouble, Darius has to take over instead. Sounds like a good book right? It's filled with mystery, drama and comedy and I'd recommend it for 8-10 year olds. Miranda, 10
