Book Recommendations from Lockdown

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,
It was terrific to have Kathryn Heyman as my guest on Thursday Book Club last week. Congratulations to Lee who won the night's raffle.

This month's guest is Meredith Jaffé who was to have joined us in June but who fell ill and was rendered (literally) speechless a couple of days beforehand.  I'm looking forward to chatting with Meredith on Thursday 26 August.

Last week was an exciting one for Thursday Book Club regular, Greg Woodland, whose novel The Night Whistler has been shortlisted for the Ned Kelly Awards. Congratulations Greg!  Scroll down for the full list below.

I'm delighted to announce a partnership between Thursday Book Club and Abbey's Bookshop.  Abbey's is a terrific book shop in the middle of the Sydney CBD with a great list of fiction and non-fiction titles and an excellent foreign language section. I'm in a French book club and over the years, it's been great to be able to source French titles from Abbey's.

Each week, Craig Kirchner and other booksellers from Abbey's will be recommending their pick of new Australian releases. Scroll down to see this week's recommendation. To receive a 15% discount on Abbey's new release recommendations, our guest authors' books and my books, just add the code THURSDAYBOOKCLUB at the checkout for Abbey's online store.

Hope you can join me at Thursday Book Club this week.  Here's the link to join us: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343

I'll look forward to seeing you. NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION

CATCH US THE FOXES by Nicola West

https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/catch-us-the-foxes-9781760857479.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Nicola West's dark tale is set in the sparkling coastal town of Kiama, not too far south of Sydney, yet the townsfolk may not be enjoying their literary moment given the portrayal here. Then again, maybe they'll love it!

The youthful protagonist of Marlowe (just out of uni) is full of barely contained energy, which is a change-up from old cops, lawyers & journos with complicated pasts.

The story moves fast as she gets drawn deeper into unravelling the mystery surrounding the murder of her friend, Lily, and the quandary of who to trust - even herself - makes this an enjoyable and engrossing read. Craig Kirchner

Enter the code THURSDAYBOOKCLUB at the checkout for a 15% discount on Abbey's new release recommendations. This code will also get you a 15% discount on the books by my guests on Thursday Book Club and my latest novels, The Teacher's Secret and The Deceptions.

An evening together without leaving the house

  Dear Friends,
Congratulations to Amanda Lohrey, winner of this year's Miles Franklin Literary Award.  Judge and Mitchell Librarian, Richard Neville, described her winning novel, The Labyrinth, as '“an elegiac novel, soaked in sadness...a beautifully written reflection on the conflicts between parents and children, men and women, and the value and purpose of creative work.”

Courtesy of BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, Anna K and Campbell M are the winners of tickets to my online interview with Lisa Jewell on Wednesday. For those of you who missed out, you can still register for the event here. Lisa Jewell is an international sensation with a great story as to how she became a writer and how she manages to come up with a new book every year. What better way to spend a Wednesday evening at home?

For half an hour of stimulating, friendly conversation without leaving the house, join us at Thursday Book Club this week.
Here's the link:  https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343

And don't forget that next week, Kathryn Heyman will be dropping by to talk about her memoir, Fury.

I'll look forward to your company.

On 29 July, Kathryn Heyman will be joining us to talk about her memoir, Fury

The story of what happens when, as a young woman, Kathryn escapes the aftermath of a sexual assault trial to join the crew of a prawn trawler, Fury is a terrific read. I expected it to be confronting and compelling - which it is - but I didn't expect it to be so funny, as Kathryn Heyman looks back on her younger self with a mixture of protectiveness, pride, bemusement and humour.

Thursday Book Club is back this week!

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,
Well, the school holidays are over but the kids are still here. If, like me, you're in lockdown, I hope the time hasn't been too difficult. Should you be keen for some relaxed, friendly online company this week, I'd love to see you at Thursday Book Club. Just click here to join us at 8pm on Thursday.

Courtesy of BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, I have two tickets to give away to my online interview on 21 July with best-selling UK author, Lisa Jewell. To be in the draw, just reply to this email with your recommendation for a good lockdown read.

On 29 July, Kathryn Heyman will be my guest on Thursday Book Club. Kathryn's memoir, Fury, is a terrific read. The story of what happens when, as a young woman, Kathryn escapes the aftermath of a sexual assault trial to join the crew of a prawn trawler, I expected Fury to be both confronting and compelling (which it is). I didn't expect it to be so funny. Kathryn Heyman looks back on her younger self with a mixture of protectiveness, pride, bemusement and humour. Read it to see what I mean.

Before the (not really) holidays, author Meredith Jaffé, who is also the artistic director of Storyfest, was to have joined us at Thursday Book Club to discuss her new novel,  The Dressmakers of Yarrandarrah Prison .  When Meredith was rendered literally speechless with croup, Michelle Barraclough, who is the marketing manager for Storyfest, stepped in to regale us with tales of what it takes to run a writers and readers festival. Meredith will be popping into Thursday Book Club on 24 August and it would be great if you could join us then.

In the meantime, hope you are staying well and happy.

Meredith Jaffé is my guest on Thursday Book Club this week

Dear Friends,
It was a weekend of terrific events at Storyfest in Ulladulla and I was so glad to be part of it.  Not only is Meredith Jaffé the artistic director of Storyfest, she's also the author of four novels, most recently The Dressmakers of Yarrandarrah Prison, which is the feel good story of a bunch of male inmates who form part of a prison sewing circle. Join me at Thursday Book Club tomorrow night when I'll be talking to Meredith about reading, writing and festival curation.

Last week, novelist and script editor, Greg Woodland, gave us a mini-masterclass on script writing, and how to create atmosphere using a minimum of words. Meanwhile, the Thursday Book Club writing group - the Seals - is continuing to grow.  Email me if you'd like me to put you in touch with them.

After this week, we'll be taking a break for school holidays and will return again on 15 July.  Happy reading until then!

For readers and writers

  Dear Friends,
Hope you enjoyed the long weekend.  And for those of you in Queensland and Western Australia, hope you enjoyed your slightly shorter weekend!

On Sunday, I took part in the inaugural Words on the Waves festival in Umina on the NSW Central Coast.  It was a beautiful day and all events were sold out.  My congratulations to Mandi McIntosh, Angela Bennetts and the rest of the organising team.

At the Limmud Oz festival on Monday, I gave a presentation on the ethics of writing other people's stories, particularly in relation to the Holocaust (which forms the backdrop of my novel, The Deceptions). The festival was alight with ideas and discussion and music and food and I came home invigorated by the sessions I saw and the conversations I had.

Storyfest is taking place in Milton this weekend and I'm delighted to be a guest on the panel Impossible Choices with Kate Mildenhall and Meg Mason.  I'm also excited to be in conversation with Craig Silvey on Saturday afternoon and to be interviewing Kelli Hawkins, Catherine Jinks and Lyn Yeowart on Sunday morning.

Congratulations to Hedwig L, Adele I, Kirsty M, Brooke L and Graeme F who have each won double passes to tomorrow's party to announce the winner of the  Russell Prize for Humour Writing.

Book recommendations to lift the spirits

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,
I've been thinking about everyone in Victoria and hope you're all managing this latest lockdown. If you'd like some online company later this week, we'd especially love to see you at Thursday Book Club.

Tomorrow evening, you can celebrate the launch of R.W.R McDonald's new novel, Nancy Business, without leaving the house. Author Sarah Bailey will be launching Nancy Business online in a free event presented by Readings.  You can register for it here.

For reading recommendations, perhaps this is a week for books to lift the spirits.  In a timely announcement, the shortlist for the Russell Prize for Humour Writing has just been announced.  You can find all the details here.

Last week, we welcomed journalist and author, Jacqueline Maley, to Thursday Book Club. We had a great conversation about writing and reading and the freedom of fiction. I found Jacqueline's novel, The Truth About Her, a terrific read and would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Next week, I'm looking forward to announcing my June guest on Thursday Book Club. In the meantime, I wish you a week of enjoyable reading.

Episode 1 of our new podcast is now available

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,
In some exciting news, last week saw the release of Episode 1 of the BAD All About Crime Podcast which I co-host with crime writer, Andy Muir.  In this episode, we chat with Catherine du Peloux Menagé, artistic director of BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, and academic and crime fiction reviewer, Professor Sue Turnbull, about the book that got us hooked on crime writing and the one that's kept us most recently addicted.  It's a lively - and sometimes heated - conversation and you can find it on Google podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

I'm looking forward to interviewing Emily Maguire tonight at The Women's Club in Sydney.  We'll be discussing Emily's new novel, Love Objects, which is a moving and insightful exploration of hoarding, betrayal and forgiveness.  It's a terrific read, Emily is a beautiful writer and, if you can't make it tonight - either in person or online -  I'll be able to tell you all about it at Thursday Book Club this week.

Don't forget that journalist and author Jacqueline Maley will be joining us at Thursday Book Club next week to discuss her compelling debut novel,  The Truth About Her .  I'd love to see you there.

In the meantime, hope you're having a good week.

Writing in the mountains

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,
Last week's Thursday Book Club came to you from the Blue Mountains, where I spent the week on a residential writing fellowship at Varuna - the National Writer's House.  We were six writers in all, and we spent the week writing hard during the day and having dinner together at night.  Varuna, the former home of Australian writer Eleanor Dark, is a beautiful place and a terrific place to focus on a manuscript. There are a number of fellowships and programs offered through Varuna and you can find the details here

The NSW Premier's Awards for Literature were recently announced and I'd like to congratulate all the winners. From 2017 to 2019, I was the senior judge for the Awards and I'm always excited to see the new list of winners. You can scroll down for this year's list or watch the presentation online.

Finally, I'm delighted to announce that the winners of online tickets to The Chase: Candice Fox in conversation with Michael Duffy are Noela A and Michelle W.  Congratulations!

I'm looking forward to Thursday Book Club this week - hope you can make it!

See you back at Thursday Book Club this week

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,

The sun shone over Carriageworks for Sydney Writers' Festival last week and the whole place buzzed with excitement and discussion and laughter and debate. It was wonderful to take part in it, both on stage and in the audience.  Artistic director Michael Williams, CEO Brooke Webb and the rest of the team did a terrific job in making it all happen.

For me, one of the highlights was The Space Between Words, a gala event at the Sydney Town Hall where some of our very fine actors read poems that had a particular meaning for them.  So Bryan Brown read An Absolutely Ordinary Rainbow by Les Murray and Toby Truslove put a new spin on A.A Milne's Disobedience.  And to finish the night, Michala Banas read Once There Was a Way to Get Back Home by Kate Jennings.  Kate Jennings died last last week.  Some of you were very close to her and I know will greatly miss her.  Her novel Moral Hazard was a revelation to me, showing me just how crisp, sharp and moving writing could be.

On 18 May, I'll be at The Women's Club where I'll be in conversation with Emily Maguire whose new novel Love Objects is a fascinating exploration of hoarding and love and loss. There will be drinks beforehand and I'd love to see you there.

Meanwhile, I have two tickets to give away to The Chase: Candice Fox in conversation with Michael Duffy on 13 May, an online event presented by BAD Sydney Crime Writers' Festival.  To be in the running for the prize, email me by Friday 7 May a short book review - two or three lines is fine - about a book you'd recommend to us.

I'll look forward to seeing you back at Thursday Book Club this week.

Thursday Book Club is taking a break this week- we'll be back next week

View this email in your browser
  Dear Friends,
Sydney Writers' Festival is on this week at Carriageworks in Redfern and artistic director Michael Williams has curated a terrific program.  So terrific, in fact, that I'll be spending a good part of the week there. There will be in conversation and panel sessions, addresses and curiosity lectures.

And after a year of distancing and isolation there will even be parties! And so, instead of hosting Thursday Book Club this week, I'll be partying with friends who have come from all over the country to take part in Sydney Writers' Festival.  I'm so excited.  My apologies for abandoning you all for champagne and a dance floor. I promise to share all the news and gossip with you next week.

As part of Sydney Writers' Festival, I'll be interviewing Jonica Newby, author of  Beyond Climate Grief , and Danielle Celermajer, author of  Summertime . We'll be discussing where comfort might be found in the midst of climate change. In Beyond Climate Grief, Jonica (former host of Catalyst on the ABC) talks to musician, Missy Higgins, TV host and comedian, Charlie Pickering, young activists and wealthy entrepreneurs about moving beyond sadness to a sense of purpose following the Black Summer fires. Danielle's book Summertime is a beautiful reflection on the role of community in the wake of those devastating fires.  They are empowering, lyrical books and I'd love to hear your thoughts about them.
