Why should you develop the studying or reading habit?
Someone asked me this question – why should I develop the studying habit? The person who asked this was a student. First thing I told her was to broaden the question to cover not only studying but reading as well. Studying refers to what we do as students but reading is something that we should undertake for the whole of our life. As soon as we are done with studying, most of us give up reading as well. Hence, we fail to use reading as a continuous development tool for ourselves.
Why should...

Are You Falling Behind the Curve as a Parent?
One of my parenting pet-peeve is that I am constantly falling behind the curve. In simple language it means that as soon as I feel I am able to manage a four year old child my child is already seven. As of now I was just beginning to feel that I could handle my 8 and 9 year old kids but I got a rude shock when I realized that they are 11 and 12 already.
The routine, working principles, ways of teaching and handling them again seem to be breaking down. My wife and I had developed a way of te...

Do Mothers Interfere More in Married Children’s Lives?
It was a nice sunny November morning. Weather in Mumbai was turning into the slight cold that is actually a cooler summer by any standards. Rashi thought it was the right time to bring up something about Kumar, her husband, that was nagging her.
‘Good morning baby,’ she tried to sound excited with two cups of tea in her hands. They had just been married for last three months.
Kumar’s reply was not that enthusiastic,’ Hi babes, can I sleep for ten more minutes.’ He ignored the fact that th...

7 Life Lessons from Elon Musk
During my recent vacation to the mountains in Himachal Pradesh, India, I had the pleasure of reading about Elon Musk. I can safely claim that if there is a superman alive today, it is him. I have always followed news about him with great interest and consider him a true visionary. This is because he has staked his existence on ventures that other not only found unsustainable but also considered ridiculus. I am happy to share a few life lessons that I derived from this reading:
Adveristy Ma...

How Did the World’s Most Valuable Start Up, Start?
The year was 1971. Two boys in Palo Alto, California, aged 21 and 16, both electronic geeks stumbled upon an article. The article was titled ‘Secrets of the Little Blue Box’.
The boys were the best of the buddies owing to their common interest in electronic, the age difference notwithstanding.
The article told about the ways hackers had found a way to make long-distance calls for free by copying the tones used for routing the signals by AT&T. As soon as the two read the article and understood...

What Makes Me Confident?
First of all, let me clarify. I am not confident all the time. Sometimes I am and sometimes I am not. So, what makes me confident at certain instances?
Preparation. Preparation.Preparation
I gave a talk in front of 50 odd managers of a Multi-national company based on my book. The topic was personal management for better productivity at work. My feet were shaking and voice trembling.
Two months later, I delivered the same talk in front if 100 managers and it was flawless. I stood straight, my...

How Do I Become A Morning Person?
This topic is very close to my heart. I used to be a night person throughout my student life and during early professional life as well. However, being a banker, I am supposed to be alert during day time, with long working hours and uncertainty in the length of working day. So, being a night person started taking a toll on my efficiency during the day and my workout schedule went haywire.
To correct this, my wife advised shifting the routine to an early to rise and early to bed. First you rea...

How do You Improve (Yourself)?
In the previous blogpost, I shared with you some my feelings. These feeling arose upon seeing the passing away of couple of people in my age-group and living in the same city. After I wrote that piece, I concluded that the whole purpose of being alive is to improve upon ourselves everyday.

From my adolescent phase, I experienced a cert...

Why are We Alive?
Recently, I witnessed couple of events that disturbed me profoundly. In my book, Happiness is All We Want, I talk about losing my grandparents one by one. Those loses forced me to think about the impermanence of this life.
But, in last couple of months, I saw two men in my age-group, early forties, passing away, abruptly. These people apparently didn’t suffer from any ailment. They were healthy and fairly active till a few hours before their death. They complained of chest pain and it was o...
