Wild Deadwood Reads has grown since year one. Saturday afternoon, we have The Rodeo! Right in town, it’s a gasp-provoking Professional Bull Riders Rodeo with the rankest bulls in the territory. We’re lucky to have an exclusive VIP Package, Behind the Chutes, where we’ll watch PBR Bullriders and stock contractors show us how they load the bulls into the chutes, and how the cowboys get themselves settled onto the bulls – for at least 8 seconds! Exasperated, Clover pushed back from the table and stood up to leave the kitchen, and quick as lightning, Jared grabbed her forearm and twirled her around to face him.

“I am never naughty, Captain,” Mia said with as much indignity as she could manage. “Only uneducated children are naughty. I have been well schooled and am a fair bit past the age of sixteen.” She watched him stop abruptly, holding a stool in either hand as he took time to appraiser her, critically. With a shake of his head he took the last two steps needed to set one stool on the floor on her side of the table before rounding to the other side, setting the second stool down and taking a seat.
“Someone has lied to you Mia,” he said whipping the cover from the tray. “Sit down and eat.” He motioned to the second bowl of portage with the knife he was using to cut the peal from his orange.
“No one has lied to me,” Mia snapped, how dare he say such a thing. Or maybe he said it because he knew something. Something about why she was now here and not home. “Lied to me about what?” she asked reaching for the bowl.
He laughed, setting the knife aside and pulling apart the orange. “I think a great many things. Most importantly, though, about how naughty brats get to choose their own punishments.” He leveled a look at her that made a chill run down her spine the same time it made her sex clench. “They do not. Now sit down and eat.”

“You’re one of those…” Devin stopped before he could say too much. “You were there the night…” Again he stopped speaking, this time he looked over his shoulder, maybe to make sure they were mostly alone. “What’s going on?”
“Avast, Captain.” Smithe stepped towards him. “This isn’t about you.” Smithe’s demeanor changed as he no longer needed to behave like a simple merchant ship crew member with the others out of earshot. “Mia the commodore is very unhappy with you. You’ve been warned to not make trouble and bring attention,” Smithe chided and Mia saw Devin looking between the two of them. “What you did could’ve caused quite the storm if he’d not run end round and tied up loose ends.”
“What did she do?” Devin asked and Mia warmed at his ready defense. “How could she have done anything? She’s not been off the ship since I got her.”
“What you think the little sea witch needs to go ashore to wreck havoc and sink fleets?”
Devin turned and glared at her. “Does this have something to do with this commendation I received for ‘revealing a deceptive practice which was in violation of all treaties and accords in relation to the Abolition Act of 1807’?”
“Devin,” Mia started then tried to laugh, “You did make a formal complaint about what happened in St. Eustatius, someone looked into the matter.”
“Mia,” both men growled at her.
“Oh shut your portal you blowhard,” Mia said and stomped her foot at Smithe. Always he was the one to advise Papa against her.
“Mrs. Winthrop,” Devin snapped. Mia opened her mouth to beg Devin to not hear the man out but one look and she bit her tongue. “Do tell, Mr. Smithe.”
“That ship you hauled into harbor…”

She sniffed and shook her head hoping, rather greatly, they’d let it alone. But she could feel them all staring at her and she could feel the swell in her chest threatening to explode if she didn’t release it. “You can’t use me like this,” she finally told them.
“Use you?” Devin snapped.
“Yes, you can’t, can’t just make use of me when it’s to your convenience. Pick my brain when your limited experiences don’t give you satisfactory answers. If you want someone with such knowledge then find someone and make them part of the crew and use them at will. But don’t think to use me when there’s not a lick of sense between the lot of you.”
“Mia I told you, you could be part of the crew,” Devin said as he took hold of her chair and dragged it closer to him.
“You told her she could be? Hasn’t she been from the start?” Mr. Brink asked.
“No, I’ve not. I’ve no place here, serve no duty, no purpose. And when the sun comes up tomorrow that won’t have changed,” Mia shouted and tried to rise only to have Devin yank her down so she yowled when her ass hit the seat.
“You serve this ship as part of the crew Mrs. Winthrop and–” Mr. Quiggly said, sounding baffled.
“No, no she doesn’t. Damn fool woman,” Lieutenant Coventon said banging his cane on the planks of the table and standing.
“Lieutenant,” Devin snarled.
“No, no, it’s time she took stock of the facts.” The man made his way to her end of the table, lifting something as he passed the cabinet. “It’s time she stops trying to be some common midshipman and starts behaving like what she is.” The man said then leaned down to face Mia from across the table.
“You’re completely correct Mrs. Winthrop. On this ship you’re completely useless. Day to day you’ve no purpose at all. Day to day there’s nothing at all you can do to better serve…”
“Lieutenant,” Devin said rising to his feet.
“Day to day not a man here would miss you,” Coventon went on sticking a finger in her face. “But in a crisis, men here would’ve died without you. In a crisis, there’s no man aboard better suited to compliment the captain. In a crisis, you read the sea, and the waves and even the goddamn bloody fish like no man ever born before you. In a crisis, I’d rather have you than most anyone I could think of. And if you don’t stop trying to lower yourself to our level then to the captain I say…” Coventon straighten then threw a strap down between them “Beat her again. Beat her until she knows she’ll never just be part of the crew. Until she understands fully she’s the very heart of it.”

Libraries or bookstores?
Both. I love my local library. I mean love it. At Christmas I take the librarians a bit box of chocolates to say thank you for their help. But I can’t resist stores either and Victoria BC has a few outstanding, independent bookshops. I have to talk sternly to myself before I go into them. A person has only so much shelf space after all.
Then there is Amazon. How great is it? I want to read a book? A minute later it’s on my Kindle. Magic!
If I love an ebook or a library book, I buy a print copy so I can have it to hold and cherish.
What genres do you write in?
This one – erotic fiction, which I love. It’s playful and fun but still challenges me to write well.
In the past, I’ve also had one YA book and one contemporary fiction novel published as well.
Do you like to outline or just dive right in when writing?
As a minimum, I draw a graph, outlining the acts, the change in the ordinary world, the halfway point, the crisis and the climax. Then I scribble all over it as my story builds.
Recently I’ve started collaborating on a time travel novel with another Blushing author. This has forced both of us to do a lot more outlining. We have an enormous spreadsheet with all our chapters outlines on it as well as ancillary spreadsheets that collect character details and research points.
Where do you find inspiration for writing?
In the world around me: in what I read, what I see, what I hear on the news. Stories pop up in my head constantly but there’s a lot of chaff in that wheat.
One thing for sure, once I’m writing a novel, I’m always surprised at how the universe starts to ‘speak’ to me about it. For instance when I found the perfect house for Simon and Sadie to buy in Sadie Says I Do, I wondered what obstacle might make it hard for them to move in quickly. Later that same week, I read an article about a prominent Canadian whose house sale was snarled up with liens by the Canada Revenue Agency (our tax office)
If you could travel to any time, what time period would you like to explore?
I’d love to visit Victorian England if I could live as one of the upper classes. My roots are English but, on my mother’s side at least, my family were the ruled, not the ruling class.
I’d want to be the Victorian lady with a handsome, stern but loving husband who lets her sleep until 9, shop for fine clothes, and play cards until early morning hours.
Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
My favorite vacation spots are quiet and remote; I don’t seek bright lights. I’ve spent months in the Australian outback which I adored.
These days, my husband and I frequently escape to Salt Spring Island, in the Canadian Gulf Islands (the other half of Washington State’s San Juan Islands). Seguro Island in the Simon in Charge series and Seeing Ronnie is a fictional island based on Salt Spring. A lot of the features are the same: the lovely ferry ride to get there, the Saturday markets, the wonderful hiking trails in the forest, and the history of the blacks who moved there to escape slavery.
We love Salt Spring because of the lack of light pollution. On summer nights we sit on the lawn, listening to the frogs, watching the bats come out to feed, while counting shooting stars.

“Hmm, you weren’t holding it while you were driving, you were groping for it in the seat because it was sliding around? You didn’t take your eyes off the road, so you knocked it to the ground by mistake. How did you know your phone was on the seat or that it was sliding around if your eyes were on the road?”
“Oh for heaven’s sake, not everything is a federal offense. Besides, women have incredible peripheral vision.”
“Well, it shouldn’t be so important, but when you get your mind set on a thought track, things get messy.” He leaned over and kissed her lips.
“I’ll find your phone.”
“Thanks, hon.” Kelli grabbed several bags and walked inside trying hard not to hide her smirk. She dropped the bags and turned around to go back for more when she hit a hard wall of firm manly flesh.
”Oomph.” Arms went out to steady her.
“Lean over the table.”
“What?”
“You heard me, lean over the table and do not dare move.”
“Why?”
“You answered and texted after you got my second text. You would have seen my message and so either you did and ignored it, or you were doing things while you were driving. Either way, I want you presented to me over that table. Ass up. Now.”
“You are checking up on me? Reading my phone because you don’t trust me? That’s not fair…ow!”
“Not a sound and not a movement. Something is not right here, and I don’t know which part is off, so I’m going to spank your ass a glowing cherry red and then we will try again. Do you understand me?”

Or maybe something came up in the investigating of the break in last night. Or…
“Kelli Frances O’Connor Jamison, if you have any lingering sense of self-preservation in you, you’ll come out of whichever stall you are in and do it now.”
Kelli sucked in a constricted breath and walked out of the tack room. God she loved and hated him in this mood. Her adrenaline went into overdrive, and her heart pounded hard even as her brain told her to play it cool.“Wh-hat’s wrong?”
Parker turned in Kelli’s direction and nodded. “That is the best room for you to have come from right now. I think I might be using some of that tack to help you remember how things are done in our house but first, we are going to sit down like reasonable, rational people and you are going to tell me about Friday and today. And you are going to be thorough with that explanation.”
Kelli’s stomach was doing summersaults, and her head hurt as much as her belly did. And, Lord help her, she had the hots for him. “I just spoke to Thorne. You remember him. The man who has known about Friday’s incident since Friday. I thought you might have forgotten to mention it to me, your husband, the person who is trying to keep you happy, healthy, and safe. You know the one who loves you to distraction and wants to paddle that wayward butt of yours with gusto right now? However, I digress, and I don’t want to keep you from telling me the whole story.
