Happy birthday to Mark Gardner, threw 9 no-hit innings in ’91

Happy 55th birthday to San Francisco Giants pitching coach Mark Gardner, who threw nine no-hit innings in 1991 but lost the game in extra innings.

Pitching at Dodger Stadium on Friday, July 26, 1991, Gardner no-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers through nine, but the Montreal Expos couldn’t score a run, leaving the game locked in a scoreless tie. Gardner lost his no-no when Lenny Harris led off the 10th by chopping a blooper over the mound that shortstop Spike Owen couldn’t get to in time.

Gardner allowed Eddie Murray to single before Manager Tom Runnells placed a call to the bullpen for Jeff Fassero.

Up came Darryl Strawberry, and he poked a singled to left to drive in Harris and give the Dodgers a 1-0 win. Gardner was charged with the loss, as he had responsibility for the base runner. Watch it all here:

Happy 60th birthday to Dave Stewart

Happy 60th birthday to Arizona Diamondbacks General Manager Dave Stewart, who threw a no-hitter for the Oakland Athletics in 1990.

On Friday, June 29, 1990, Stewart no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays for a 5-0 victory at the Skydome. Hours later and thousands of miles away, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Fernando Valenzuela no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals for a 6-0 win at Dodger Stadium.

The games marked only the second time that no-hitters were thrown on the same day. The other two were back in 1898:

Happy birthday George Mogridge, pitched NY Yankees’ first no-no

George Mogridge threw the New York Yankees’ first no-hitter in 1917, a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.Happy 129th birthday to George Mogridge, who pitched the New York Yankees’ first no-hitter on April 24, 1917, a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Also born on this date in 1875 is Walter Thornton, who threw a Chicago Orphans no-hitter

against the Brooklyn Bridegrooms at West Side Park during the second game of a Sunday doubleheader on August 21, 1898. Chicago topped Brooklyn 2-0.

Happy 73rd birthday to Dick Bosman, threw ’74 Indians no-no

Dick BosmanHappy 73rd birthday to Dick Bosman, who thew a no-hitter for the Cleveland Indians in 1974.

Bosman got the start against the Oakland Athletics at Cleveland Stadium on Friday, July 19, 1974, and no-hit the A’s for a 4-0 victory. The Kenosha, Wisconsin right-hander struck out four and didn’t walk a single batter, but his own error killed the perfect game.

In the fourth inning, Sal Bando hit a slow hopper to the right of the mound and Bosman’s errant throw to first let Bando take the base.

Wilson, threw 2 Astros no-nos, born 72 years ago today

Don WilsonToday would be the 72nd birthday of Don Wilson, who threw no-hitters for the Houston Astros in 1967 and 1969. The right-handed flamethrower, who pitched one game in 1966, was a mainstay of the Houston rotation from 1967 to 1974, winning 104 games.

He died of accidental asphyxiation in his home on Jan. 5, 1975, when he left his car running after pulling into his garage. His son, who was upstairs, also died.

The Astros retired Wilson’s No. 40 in 1975.

Allie Reynolds, tossed 2 Yankees no-nos, born 100 years ago today

Allie ReynoldsAllie Reynolds, who tossed a pair of no-hitters for the New York Yankees in 1951, was born 100 years ago today.

The Bethany, Oklahoma, native threw both of his no-hitters in a 2½-month span during the 1951 season, in which he posted a 17-8 record. He improved on that for 1952, going 20-8 with an American League-leading 2.06 ERA. He retired with a 182–107 record and 3.30 ERA.

Happy birthday Devern Hansack, threw 5-inning, rain-shortened no-no in ’06

Major League Baseball’s committee for statistical accuracy had already determined that rain-shortened no-nos were not official no-hitters, but Hansack made the most of his October 1, 2006, against the Baltimore Orioles on the final day of the season. He no-hit the O’s for five innings while the Red Sox built a 9-0 lead. Umpires called the game at Fenway Park after the fifth due to rain.

Hansack’s no-no was one of his three career starts in the majors, as he appeared in just nine major league games between 2006-2008 while compiling a 2-2 record with a 3.70 ERA.

Carlton, holds modern-day NL one-hitter record, elected to Hall 23 years ago today

Steve Carlton, one of most proficient major league pitchers not to throw a no-hitter, was elected to the Hall of Fame 23 years ago today.

The 329-game winner never even reached the ninth inning with a no-hitter intact, but he holds the modern-day National League record for one-hitters with six.

On July 4, 1979, Carlton retired 19 New York Mets in a row at Veterans Stadium before Elliott Maddox killed his perfecto by driving a double to the left-center field gap. Carlton held on for the 1-0 complete-game one-hitter, having scored the game’s only run in the third. Carlton hit a one-out double, and Bake McBride followed with another.

Bob Feller and Nolan Ryan share the major league record with 12 one-hitters, but all of Feller’s one-ers were thrown for the AL’s Cleveland Indians, and only three of Ryan’s one-hitters (one for the Mets, two for the Astros) were thrown in the NL.

“Old Hoss” Radbourn threw seven NL one-hitters for the Providence Grays, Boston Beaneaters and the Cincinnati Reds back in the game’s early days.

Happy 81st birthday, Sandy Koufax

A happy 81st birthday to Sandy Koufax, who tossed four no-hitters — one of them perfect — for the 1960s Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Brooklyn-born southpaw pitched his no-nos in consecutive years from 1962-65, culminating with a perfecto over the Chicago Cubs in ’65. The Cubs played nearly 50 years until they were no-hit again, when Cole Hamels tossed a no-no at Wrigley on July 25, 2015.

Lea and Galvin, no-hitter throwers with Christmas birthdays

Pud GalvinMerry Christmas to all, and on this day we’ll also celebrate the birth of two no-hitter throwers born 100 years apart.

Charlie Lea, the only no-hitter pitcher born in France, entered the world on this day in 1956 into the town of Orleans, which sits about 69 miles southwest of Paris. Lea tossed a no-no for the Montreal Expos in 1981. On May 10, 1981, during the second game of a Sunday doubleheader at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, Lea no-hit the San Francisco Giants for a 4-0 win.

Born 100 years before Lea was Pud Galvin, who tossed a no-no for the National League’s Buffalo Bisons in 1880. At Buffalo’s Riverside Park on Friday, August 20, 1880, Galvin no-hit the Worcester Ruby Legs for a 1-0 win, the first of his two no-hitters.

Galvin followed it up with a road no-hitter at Detroit’s Recreation Park against the Wolverines on Monday, August 4, 1884. Buffalo won 18-0 in game that still holds the record for the biggest run differential in a major league no-no.
