Gooden tosses Yankees no-hitter, 21 years ago today

Dwight Gooden threw a New York Yankees no-hitter, 21 years ago today.

On Tuesday, May 14, 1996, Gooden no-hit the Seattle Mariners for a 2-0 victory at Yankee Stadium. “Doc” appeared to be running out of steam in the ninth frame as he walked Alex Rodriguez and Edgar Martínez and then threw a wild pitch to allow runners to reach second and third. But he recovered to strike out Jay Buhner and then got Paul Sorrento to pop out to short to complete the no-no. Teammates carried the 31-year-old hero off the Yankee Stadium field to the cheers of more than 20,000 fans.

Gooden thrice came close to getting a no-no while with the New York Mets:

On June 6, 1984, in just his 11th major-league start, the emerging strikeout artist reached the eighth inning with a no-hitter intact before yielding a lead-off single to the Pirates’ Doug Frobel. New York won 2-1 in 13 innings.
On September 7, 1984, Gooden threw a one-hit 10-0 shutout against the Chicago Cubs. The only Cubs hit was a 5th-inning single by Keith Moreland.
On June 5, 1988, Gooden again reached the eighth inning and again lost it on the leadoff batter as the Cubs’ Damon Berryhill singled. Gooden held on for an 11-3 complete-game victory.

Also throwing a no-hitter on this date was the Kansas City Royals’ Jim Colborn. On Saturday, May 14, 1977, Colborn no-hit the Texas Rangers for a 6-0 win at Royals Stadium.

Happy 133rd birthday to Miles ‘Alex’ Main, threw no-no for K.C. Packers

Miles “Alex” Main, who threw a no-hitter for the Kansas City Packers in 1915, was born 132 years ago today.

Main no-hit the Buffalo Buffeds/Blues in a Federal League match-up at Buffalo’s International Fair Association Grounds on August 16, 1915. Only three Buffeds reached base thanks to one walk and a couple of Kansas City errors as the Packers won 5-0.

Main also pitched briefly for the Detroit Tigers (1914) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1915).

‘Toothpick’ Sam Jones 1st African-American to throw MLB no-no, 62 years ago yesterday

Sam “Toothpick” Jones"Toothpick" Sam Jones became the first African-American to throw a Major League Baseball no-hitter, 62 years ago yesterday.

Jones, pitching for the Chicago Cubs on May 12, 1955, no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 4-0 win at Wrigley Field. He completed an accomplishment that likely would have been preceded by such Negro Leagues greats as Dick "Cannonball" Redding, "Bullet" Joe Rogan, Leon Day and Satchel Paige had baseball integrated earlier.

Also throwing no-hitters on May 12 are Charles "Chief" Bender, Carl Erskine and A.J. Burnett.

Bender, a starter for the Philadelphia Athletics, threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Naps at Shibe Park on Thursday, May 12, 1910. Erskine tossed his second Brooklyn Dodgers no-hitter, a 3-0 win over the New York Giants, on Saturday, May 12, 1956 at Ebbets Field. Burnett, a Florida Marlins pitcher, no-hit the San Diego Padres at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday, May 12, 2001 for a 3-0 win.

Greinke loses no-no in the 8th

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Zack Greinke took a no-hitter into the eighth inning on Thursday night before losing it on a Gregory Polanco homer to lead off the inning.

The lost no-no leaves us in a drought of more than a year dating back to April 21, 2016, when the Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrieta no-hit the Cincinnati Reds.

Greinke had been facing the minimum, walking one and striking out 11 before Polanco went yard. The only runner to reach base before the homer, Jordy Mercer, was thrown out stealing in the third inning.

Greinke finished out the eighth and handed the ball to Fernando Rodney, who completed the one-hit 2-1 victory.

Eller, Koufax and Leiter threw no-nos on this date

The Cincinnati Reds’ “Hod” Eller no-hit the Cardinals in 1919.Al Leiter, Sandy Koufax and Horace “Hod” Eller threw no-hitters on this date.

On Saturday, May 11, 1996, 21 years ago today, Leiter threw the Florida Marlins first no-hitter. The New Jersey native no-hit the Colorado Rockies for an 11-0 win at Joe Robbie Stadium.

Koufax, who threw four no-hitters with the Los Angeles Dodgers, tossed his second no-no against the San Francisco Giants on this date in 1963.

Eller, a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals at Redland Field 97 years ago today.

Verlander tosses second no-no, 6 years ago today

The Detroit Tigers’ Verlander threw his second career no-hitter, six years ago today.

On Saturday, May 7, 2011, Verlander no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays for a 9-0 victory at the Rogers Centre. Verlander walked just one batter in the eighth inning while striking out 4.

The New York Giants’ Jesse Barnes no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies on May 7, 1922.Also throwing a no-no on this date is the New York Giants’ Jesse Barnes.

Barnes no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies at the Polo Grounds on Sunday, May 7, 1922 for a 6-0 win. Barnes faced the minimum 27 batters, walking Cy Williams in the fifth inning but retiring him and batter Art Fletcher on a double play.

Philadelphia coaches asked for the game ball in the middle of the seventh inning and showed umpire Bob Hart several cuts, prompting Hart to throw it out of the game.

Belinsky no-hits Orioles, 55 years ago today

Los Angeles Angels rookie Bo Belinsky threw one of the majors’ three May 5 no-hitters, 55 years ago today.

On May 5, 1962, Los Angeles Angels rookie Bo Belinsky no-hit the Baltimore Orioles for a 2-0 win that launched the former Trenton pool shark into Hollywood stardom.

On this date in 1917, the St. Louis Browns’ Ernie Koob no-hit the Chicago White Sox for a 1-0 victory at home at Sportsman’s Park. Browns teammate Bob Groom also no-hit the White Sox the next day, but Groom’s gem came in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader so the two weren’t consecutive.

On Thursday, May 5, 1904, Cy Young, pitching for the Boston Americans (Red Sox) retired all 27 Philadelphia Athletics he faced for a 3-0 win at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. It was his second of career no-hitters that would tie him for the career lead with Larry Corcoran.

‘Smokey’ Joe Williams no-hits Brooklyn Royal Giants, 98 years ago today

“Smokey” Joe Williams tossed a Negro Leagues no-hitter for the New York Lincoln Giants, 98 years ago today.

On May 4, 1919, during the first game of a Sunday doubleheader, Williams no-hit the Brooklyn Royal Giants for a 1-0 victory. The hard throwing righty from Seguin, Texas, who also took on the nickname “Cyclone” Joe, also served as the Lincoln Giants’ player/manager from 1914-1923.

Williams was widely consider the best pitcher of his day. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Happy 31st birthday to Homer Bailey

Happy 31st birthday to Homer Bailey, the Cincinnati Reds hurler who tossed no-hitters in 2012 and 2013.

Bailey first no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, September 28, 2012 for a 1-0 win at PNC Park.

Less than a year later, on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, Bailey no-hit the San Francisco Giants at home at Great American Ball Park for a 3-0 victory.
