10 Things I’ve Learned Through Self-Publishing (Part 1)

Writing a book takes an effort. A lot of effort. It takes time, and research, and a huge amount of determination. But what about publishing? That’s the easy part, right? All you have to do is upload to amazon and you’ll be published in under thirty minutes. Simple as that, right?

Wrong.

There’s a lot you have to do in the self-publishing industry that you wouldn’t have to do with traditional houses. There’s a whole lot you’ll learn—and your journey will be different from mine or anyone else’...

The Blue Monarch

Jeremiah Morelli - The Last Butterfly

Art by Jeremiah Morelli
Visit his art site here.

Today’s writing prompt result came from this wonderful piece of art that shows many people reaching for the blue butterfly. Here’s the idea that came from this stunning piece.

The day had come. The day of the Blue Monarch was here.
Touching the insect would be close to impossible…and being the first to touch it would be as unlikely as finding a fox cup in a wolf’s den. Even so, Flint knew he had to try. For his son.

He bit h...

Why Writing Prompts can Boost Your Writing Skills

To start, what, exactly, are writing prompts? I’m sure a lot of have heard the term, maybe you’ve even used a few. I have.

But to those of you who don’t know what a writing prompt is, it’s basically a short phrase, picture, or idea meant to induce creative thinking.

There are three types of writing prompts (that I use—I’m sure there’s several more than just three types), and today I will show you all three, and why each one can boost your writing skills.

Phrases

These writing prompts will...

The Essence of Colors (Writing Prompt Result)

Colors

They were portals.

Portals into each color of the rainbow. In Yellow, there’s no such thing as a rose, and Blue cannot exist. Green does not know the flame of Red, nor the tinge of Orange at daybreak.

But I know what true color is, and not one color has ever felt the same as another.

In Red there is no clear-sky blue, no lily pad greens, or even the deep violet of clouds as sunset turns to twilight. You may delight in the many cheery roses, the sweet succulent cherries, and the deep richnes...

Map Of Ërale

Map of Erale

Ërale

Tallpine Forest: The Tallpines are home to many terrors, including the rebel’s secret city, and a dangerous, unidentified beast. Many believe the Tallpine forest is haunted, and not many venture far into its depths. Throughout the forest runs a river that feeds the forest, in some areas this river is very strong, and in others the river trickles more like a stream, making it easier to cross.

Cinuet Mountains: The Cinuet Mountains are rough and hard to travel, and only the bravest dare...

Convos With Characters: Jade

As some of you know, Jade is mute, so for further reference, these “convos” with her are something I actually do when writing, and the rules of reality are bent for such times so that she can speak. Now that that’s aside, let’s move on to my conversation with Jade, regarding her values in the second book of the Jaded series.

_______________

*I walk into the room, pen and paper in hand, and sit down across from my main character, Jade.*

Me: “So, Jade, why must you helpXëno find the thief that...

The Other Side: Excerpt

This is one of the beginning scenes of a novel I did last year for NaNoWriMo. I never finished it, because I decided to finish The Jaded Series before I begin on anything new, but I kept the 5000 word document in case I decide to come back to it.

I got this idea one day while standing outside in the fog. There was a thick wall of fog only a few meters away from me, and I couldn’t see anything beyond it. So I had this idea: what if there was a whole other world on the other side of that fog…an...
