It is mainly because those of us that write shorter stuff, poetry, humor, ect have been shafted by Medium so many times that now that they are finally giving us at least a little bit of a chance that we have started writing and posting short form work.
Still not a great fix, but better than nothing.
I'm surprised Battleship Earth, Birdemic, Thankskilling, and Trolls didn't make this list.

Great story! Well, December 25th was originally all about Saturnalia and Sol Invictus anyway. Essentially, Constantine I's nod to the Roman military, so celebrating X-mas on December 26th didn't actually get "Jesus' birth date" wrong, lol.
