Top Ten with M.D. Neu

I’d like to welcome my friend and fellow NineStar Press author, M.D. Neu, to my blog.  He has an amazing paranormal book that I asked him to stop by and share a bit about with all of you.  So, without further ado…

Thank you to Casey for having me here today to share a Top Ten list about my novel The Calling.

What are the Top Ten reason’s you wrote The Calling?

I’ve always loved vampires and vampire stories, but I never understood how vampires could live in our modern world.  All it would take is one video on YouTube, or bodies piling up around town drained of blood and the media would be all over it. So, I wanted to tell a story that addressed some of these issues in a real way, while still having the allure and mystic.
I wanted to show my Immortals, or vampires, living with technology. What better place to showcase them and technology then in the heart of the technology world; San Jose, CA.
[image error]For this story, I wanted to show an ‘every person’ type of hero. A character that could be anyone you see on the street. He could be your brother, neighbor, or stranger you pass every day and don’t give a second thought to. I wanted to show that anyone could have an exciting, albeit paranormal adventure.
With respect to my vampires, I created them living and interacting with humans. I didn’t want them hiding in the shadows or lurking in abandoned places. My Immortals needed to adapt or die.
When it comes to the antagonist for the story, I wanted to go for something different. I didn’t want the foe to be a typical human. And I’m happy with how it all worked out.
Another difference I wanted to highlight, in my story, was the process of becoming an Immortal.  We’ve been raised with a bite on the neck and the next thing you know you’re a vamp, well in this story I wanted to explore that idea and make the process feel more believable.
Even though, in The Calling, I do have magic and powers; I wanted them to feel real, it other books vampires have all these abilities that make them superhuman and I’m not sure that could actually work in our world, so I wanted to figure out a way to still have some of there powers but have it not be a crutch.
In crafting this story, it was important to show a full range of characters, as much as I love traditional vampire stories I wanted to reflect or broader world. So you are going to see vampires of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds which I believe makes the story more believable.
For the world building, I wanted to show my Immortals not as good and bad, but in the grey area. We all have good and bad inside of us, so why not the Immortals? In my case I have the Light and the Dark, but just because an Immortal is ‘of the Light’ doesn’t make them a good person. The opposite is also true, ‘being of the Dark’ doesn’t make you a bad person. And I don’t think we’ve seen a lot of that for vampires.
Lastly, I wanted to craft a story that wasn’t romance or erotica. Yes, there are some adult moments in the novel, but that is not the focus of the story. This book is about the people who inhabit it, not about jumping from bedroom to bedroom, or on the flip side, it’s not a gore fest. There are a few brutal scenes but again its part of the story and not the focus of the story.

Those are my Top Ten reasons for writing The Calling. Before I head off, I would like to share that the sequel to The Calling, which will be titled The Called, has been writing and is in the editing stages. The sequel will conclude the story which I’m excited about, and I’m delighted to be able to share the blurb here:

The world is changing quickly for Chris now that he’s part of the Immortal Community. The events of his past behind him. But, true magic is gradually taking hold in the world and nothing in the Immortal community is what he thought. Now enemies must work together and longtime friends may not be trustworthy. Who is lurching in the shadows? What does this mean for witches, immortals and humans?

I hope folks are excited to read the sequel, as they were to read the first book. With luck this blurb wets your appetite a bit for the second book.

Also, I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming Urban Fantasy novel T.A.D.-The Angel of Death coming out the end of September 2019.

When Tad pushes the boundaries of his duties too far, his angel wings are stripped, and he is sent to New York City to live as a human. Lost and alone he meets Doug, and the two start a friendship that will last a lifetime. But nothing is simple when you’re dealing with a former Angel of Death and a Drag Queen. Could these two cause our world to end or will they manage to keep the future secure?

Thanks again to Casey for allowing me to stop by. I appreciate the opportunity and the chance to share this Top Ten List with you all.

An odd combination, but one that has influenced his writing.

Growing up in an accepting family as a gay man he always wondered why there were never stories reflecting who he was. Constantly surrounded by characters that only reflected heterosexual society, M.D. Neu decided he wanted to change that. So, he took to writing, wanting to tell good stories that reflected our diverse world.

Author Interview – Asexual Artists

I was honored to be part of this awesome project that highlights all the amazing ace artists out there!  Not only does it give artists a chance to shine, but it’s a wonderful source of education and awareness.

What inspires you?

Really, it can be anything and everything.  I find inspiration in music, photography, artwork…  I can find it while people-watching or in a random piece of conversation.  I’ve even gotten my fair share of inspiration from dreams.  I literally never know when something will strike.

Do you have any kind of special or unique signature, symbol, or feature you include in your work that you’d be willing to reveal?

I like to use star imagery in my work.  I’m also a geek and tend to include quotes from movies/shows/video games.  I’m always interested to see if people can spot the lines I’ve used.

Author Interview – J.P. Jackson’s Blog

Gremlins, vampires, and werewolves, oh my…  I sat down with my friend and fellow author, J.P. Jackson, to talk about the Inquisition Trilogy, our shared love of fantasy, and just about everything under the sun.  And I may have stolen one of his pet demons.  Shh.

JP Jackson: “Okay, define success for me.”

Casey Wolfe: “Being happy and satisfied with what you’ve accomplished and where you are currently in your life.”

JP Jackson: “I think that’s really hard for a lot of people, myself included. We often lose sight of the things we have accomplished and instead focus in on the next big goal.”

Casey Wolfe: “I’m really trying hard to focus in on the small things in my life that have been achieved and that have brought me great joy.”

Author Interview – M.D. Neu’s Blog

I was so happy to get the chance to chat with fellow NSP author, M.D. Neu over on his blog.  We talked everything from my debut novel, One Bullet, to my current Inquisition Trilogy, along with random info about me – if anyone actually cares about that sort of thing, haha.

Welcome Casey, before we get started why don’t you tell us something about yourself. Something not in your standard bio.

I’m a space nerd, on top of my other geeky interests – as though there aren’t enough.  I love all things space – whether it’s studying the science of it, admiring the infinite beauty, or pondering that age-old question of “where does alien life exist out there?”  I pretty much stalk NASA’s Facebook page (and mission pages) and watch their live streams whenever I can.  I may also talk to Curiosity as though it’s actually the one answering posts – so sue me! – and cried when they had to call off the search for a signal from Oppy.  I cheer for JPL like they’re rock stars.  Basically, if NASA asked for volunteers to go to Mars tomorrow, I’d be the first to sign up.

Without spoilers why don’t you tell us about The Inquisition Trilogy.

Well, the trilogy’s conflict centers around our titular bad guys, the Inquisition.  They’re an organization that has risen to power, found in multiple countries around the world.  Once famed dragon killers – thanks for making them extinct, jerks – they’ve become experts in all things magicae and weaseled their way into politics by becoming the policing force for magicae in their respective countries.  And, like any power-hungry entity with no real government oversight, well, things have gone…bad.

In each book, the POV gets passed between couples but we stay within the same group of friends that are fighting back against the Inquisition.  While there’s an overarching plot that carries out over the course of all three books, each has their own individual subplots happening within them as well.  So, there’s plenty going on.

We’ve talked quite a bit about your contemporary fantasy series, let’s switch gears and talk about your other novel, One Bullet. Tell us about it? What inspired you to write this story? What was it like to get the Honorable Mention from the Rainbow Awards? That had to feel good.

One Bullet follows the story of former police officer, Ethan Brant, and Detective Shawn Greyson, who met the night Ethan was shot.  Shawn not only saved Ethan that night, but continues to help him in his recovery.  During that time, the pair inevitably become close friends…and then something more.

It was really exciting to get an Honorable Mention on my debut novel.  It was an unexpected surprise, to be sure!

As far as the inspiration goes…I remember being inspired by the amazing artist known as Yuumei, and a particular illustration they had done for their Fisheye Placebo webcomic entitled “Rise.”  For some reason, it percolated in my head and formed into this idea of a first meeting between two characters – one being shot and the other that saved their life.  Funny enough, as the plot of the novel actually took form, the reason behind the shooting and way it takes place is completely different to how it was originally envisioned – which involved a protest.  But, that art is still the source for the entire project, despite the changes.

BOOK RELEASE: A Vampire’s Redemption

A Vampire’s Redemption (The Inquisition Trilogy, Book 2)

Marcus was likely dead, killed by the Inquisition, or so it was believed. Then the vampire was found, broken beyond words, in an isolated prison fortress. Marcus had never expected to see daylight again, let alone be rescued by his mate. Now he worries he’ll drag Caleb into his darkness.

Caleb was the one who pulled Marcus out of his prison cell, and he’s determined to drag him from the nightmares of his mind as well. After all, that’s what mates are for, and Caleb had lost hope at finding his. And if he can help destroy the entire Inquisition? Well, all the better.

Dealing with Marcus’s physical and mental healing from his trauma is difficult enough, but Inquisition holdouts are causing chaos everywhere, and sinister plots are rampant. Marcus and Caleb have no choice but to fight back. It’s a good thing they are not alone.
