Lord Byron’s Box, Redux (The Darcys in Venice, Chapter 28)

As the golden song faded with the end of the first act and the curtain was drawn, Lydia sprawled along the velvet railing of the box, crushing her bosom against it. “Lizzy,” she said pettishly, “That girl is no prettier than I am, and she squeals too high when she sings.”

Elizabeth was surprised. “Why, she is La Righetti, and has the highest reputation as a soprano.”

“Soprano? Is that why she shrieks so? Righetti, Spaghetti. But tell me, Lizzy, really, I do think I could do as well, or better. ...

Lord Byron’s Box (The Darcys in Venice, Chapter 27)

Mr. Collins stood awkwardly in the middle of Lord Byron’s box at the Teatro de Fenice, arms akimbo, looking very much how he felt, like a fish out of water.

“I declare! This is very fine, to be sure, to be in a box at the opera, but I do not know if it will quite do.”

“Not do!” exclaimed Lady Catherine, scandalized. “Why, this is His Lordship’s own box, and I do not perceive how you could hope for better, Mr. Collins. You are not even a member of the aristocracy, and should consider yourself ve...

Presenting: “It’s a Wonderful Life, Mr. Darcy”

I’m thrilled to present to you It’s a Wonderful Life, Mr. Darcy! As some of you know, I actually wrote it quite a while ago but have holding it back until we were a little closer to Christmas, since this new P&P story is told in a Christmas framework. Now it’s finally time to share it. Yippee!

From the title, you have already guessed that the basic premise is borrowed from the beloved movie (beloved my me, at least) It’s a Wonderful Life, where George Bailey, at a very low ebb in his life, is g...

Christmas in October

Happy day, Janeites!  What a strange bought of weather we  have had around the globe this year. I was reading an old favorite the other day, and was wishing for some lovely winter weather. You know, the kind with snowflakes ‘that stay on our nose and eyelashes.’

Well, that in itself is too far off, but I could at least put you in the holiday spirit with an excerpt from my Christmas novella work in progress. It is as yet untitled, but will once again star those precocious little Gardiner cousins...

P&P The Untold Stories: Fitzwilliam Learns of Darcy’s Engagement

Fitzwilliam Learns of Darcy’s Engagement

October 20, 1812

ON A COLD OCTOBER AFTERNOON, Colonel the Honorable Richard Fitzwilliam jauntily ascended the steps of Darcy House in London. His knock on the door was swiftly answered.

“Ah, Thacker, has my cousin returned?”

The butler glanced at the door. The colonel was a constant and welcomed guest at Darcy House, but the knocker was not in evidence, a clear sign that the family was unavailable to visitors.

The colonel laughed. “Oh, do not bother, ol...
