Ahoy. You've run aground on my small, oblong island in the GoodReads archipelago. You're welcome to surf, swim in the lagoon or stroll along the pier, where they sell prawns, whelks and words by the cupful. If you'd like to keep things topical—as well as tropical—sling yourself in a beach hammock and crack open a good book. One of these perhaps...

My first novel, ZORGAMAZOO, won the 2011 California Young Reader Medal, the 2010 Silver Birch Award, and the 2009 Children’s Choice Award. If you've had too much sun and crave something darker, try my hardboiled fairy tale, DUST CITY. It was shortlisted for the 2011 Edgar Alan Poe Award and the 2011 Sunburst Award. Then there's my second novel-in-verse, PRINCE PUGGLY OF SPUD AND THE KINGDOM OF SPIF

Like most writing for youth, the age of the principle voice or central subject is often close to that of the reader. Beyond that, there's little difference and anything goes really, in my opinion. I should also qualify my answer to say that my own children's poetry (e.g. Zorgamazoo) is usually pitched at the pre-YA set (somewhere around 5 to 12 year olds). Of course, young readers are famous for defying categories—especially age categories—so take that how you like. Hope that answers your question!(less)

As a result, I've always been partial to chimeras, creatures created by mixing the characteristics of a number of different animals and creatures together. Perhaps my favourite chimera is the manticore, a sphinx-like creature with a lion's body, a bat's wings, a dragon's tail, and a human face. Thanks for the question, RPW(less)

How to return to short fiction

This post is about going back, after many years away, to short stories. I’ll include a few insights into my process that might – might – be of use to writers wrestling with the form (looking at you, my students).

Short fiction is perhaps my first love. I’m fairly certain the first grown-up literature I came to by choice was via Roald Dahl, graduating from Mathilda and James and the Giant Peach to h

“Here is a story that’s stranger than strange.
Before we begin you may want to arrange:
a blanket, a cushion, a comfortable seat,
and maybe some cocoa and something to eat.

I’ll warn you, of course, before we commence,
my story is eerie and full of suspense,
brimming with danger and narrow escapes,
and creatures of many remarkable shapes.

Dragons and ogres and gorgons and more,
and creatures you’ve not even heard of before.
And faraway places? There’s plenty of those!
(And menacing villains to tingle your toes.)

So ready your mettle and steady your heart.
It’s time for my story’s mysterious start...”
Robert Paul Weston, Zorgamazoo

“Jiminy," says the old woman. The mothballs gleam with excitement and she claps her hands. "A wolf!"
"Gram!" Siobhan glares across the room. She turns to me. "You'll have to excuse her. She's real old. Wasn't a lot integrating between the species back in her day."
I pad over and put out a paw. "Pleased to meet you, madam."
She blushes, the varicose veins in her cheeks swelling with blood. Instead of taking my paw to shake, however, she turns it over as if it's a piece of bruised fruit in a market. "Hmmm..." She pores over my palm, nodding like a fortune-teller. Her spectacles slide comically down the bridge of her nose, and when she looks up at me, her face is full of mock astonishment. "Oh, my! What big teeth you have!" She giggles and kicks her slippered feet.
"Gram!!
The old elf claps her tiny hands. "I always wanted to say that!”

“It appeared painful to regrow a set of hands, but I can hardly blame her for dabbling in street magic. Anyone can see she's addicted to being whole.”
Robert Paul Weston, Dust City

Robert Weston So glad you liked it! The short answer to your question is: A LOT. I have a new verse novel in the style of Zorgamazoo coming out in Feb 2013; a coming-of-age teen novel out in spring 2014; and I'm currently working on a middle grade prose novel for fall 2013. So, yeah—a lot.

Karin Thanks for requesting Friendship. I love DUST CITY. What are you working on now?
