Oh hello, Sunshine

Can't get enough of the awesome weather we've been having in the PNW. This time last year we were wet, very wet, and quite cold. But lately the sun has been out, our yards have come alive, our spirits have come alive (I'm like, skipping in my head!), and there has been some serious enjoyment of the SUN.
I'm dreaming of painting with True in the backyard. Maybe some collaborative pairings? Either way, you can find me in my backyard, this summer, painting for sure. Bring it on, summertime. We're so ready for you.

(An old journal entry from when I was 22 years old. It reads, "I just came to the realization that we all have a choice. We can either choose to be grumpy, in a bad mood, or we can choose to be our real, happy selves. Our moods & actions are our own responsibility. I cannot blame other or outside circumstances for my behavior, or my reaction to them. Whew - I'm ready to be joyful.")
Q: Were you always this strong and positive? Was there a defining moment, experience, phase in your life when you decided to consciously be these qualities? Did you always have a pattern of attracting amazing confident women in her life? - R
A: Short answer: NO. Long Answer: Although I seem to be naturally inclined to look at the bright side (I remember this being a shame trigger for me in high school because it seemed so many of my cool/artsy/melodramatic friends were stoic and I was definitely the bubbly one), I've struggled a lot with gremlins: negativity, shame, envy, fear, self-esteem, and on an on. I began to get serious, though, about my own self development for the first time when I was about 21. I was in a really tough spot in my life: I had graduated early from college at the age of 20 (a slightly immature 20) which meant that interviewers were not taking me all that seriously and I had a hard time finding a job. I eventually moved from my college town in FL to Atlanta, GA where I got four (yes, and all at the same time!) random part-time jobs so that I could afford my rent, and start paying my student loans. It was a miserable time in my life. My part time jobs included Blockbuster Music, a travel agency, an after school program, and telemarketing. There was a lot of commuting from one job to the next, juggling schedules, and worrying about money. In addition to deeply missing my college friends (many of them still in college), I had all sorts of disappointment toward myself for not being able to find a job in my field (I had a bachelors in social work at the time). I also didn't have a ton of friends in Atlanta and was living in a stressful situation with my ex-boyfriend. So there was that. Bottom line, I was deeply unhappy and perpetually stuck in a victim-stance attitude the entire time.
After about 8 months of being miserable, I gave up and left Atlanta. There is a hilarious story about how I left (think breakdown after finding my car broken into, frantically filling up large black yard bags with my "stuff", throwing it all into my car, covering my glass strewn carseat with a thick towel, and beelining it for 8 hours straight on the highway in a rainstorm, without a window, until I wound up back in my college town on my BFF's couch. By then, I was 21 years old with no job, no money, and a heavy heart from trying so hard during those rough months in Atlanta.
Can I just say turning point.
I spent the next year back in my college town, getting myself together. I called it my year of "self development." I got a full time admin job at a non-profit with the sweetest boss a girl could ask for. I rented an apt with a dear friend. I began to read books (this book and this book were my main guides). I began to journal + reflect (repeat, repeat, repeat). But most importantly, I suppose, I began to practice all the things I was learning about in the books: self compassion, embracing my vulnerabilities, gratitude (I had loads of gratitude lists and journals back then).
As you can see in my journal entry above, I was a young 22 year old just learning some very key principles in living a joyful life. I think of my books and my best friends as my guides during those days. They taught me so much (and still do). After the year of self development was up, I enrolled into Social Work graduate school. More books, more insights, more practice. So yes, those early 20's were defining years for me, for sure.
What I find so interesting nowadays is that, in some ways, I'm right back to that intense focus on self development. I suppose there are years when we have to practice more than others, and the last couple of years have been huge practice years for me. But I like being a life long learner :)
Thanks for the great question! Keep em' coming,Kelly Rae

Creative Play on my head and in my phone
Friends, I've discovered a couple iphone apps that have been awesome for iphonography fun. Between Over (the app that lets you put words over photos), PicTapGo (Photoshop's iphone app for layering filters), and Instagram (best social media app ever - come follow me!), I'm in a bit of creative/iphone/photo/filter/word heaven!
Been feeling a tiny pull toward photography creative play so it's nice to need nothing but a camera phone + apps. We live in such a cool age that we can indulge our creative senses while tinkering with creative apps while sitting in waiting rooms, carpool lines, and more. I find it lovely and inspiring.
Speaking of creative play:
(About to go blond)
(Going blond)
(Then to strawberry blond - showing the before + after shot)
(then back to brown)
In a span of 72 hours, I went from blond, to strawberry blond, back to brown. I was proud of myself for taking the risk but after a couple of days of being grumpy, I eventually figured it was my hair! Once I went back to brown, I was back to feeling like myself. Lesson 1: Nothing is permanent so we may as well take some risks. Lesson 2: Totally have to indulge the creative urges and think of it as creative play/experimentation.
Really glad I was brave enough to do it. Really glad I was brave enough to say it wasn't for me.
Reddish brown it is!

The gift of self portraits!
Back in February, during our Radiate Sessions weekend, the amazingly talented Viv McMaster led us all on a self portrait photo walk. With her guidance those couple of hours of experimenting with self portraiture, and looking into the lens with kindness (have you ever done that? TRY IT!), became a big part of my reclaiming my confidence.
Using just our iPhones, Viv led us through several prompts. It was the most fun to frolic about, experiment with shooting into the sun and take a whole bunch of shots using the Gorillacam app (it's like a self timer for your iphone camera).
Throughout the day, I felt the feeling of being about 10 years old - playing on the beach, experimenting with different prompts, angles, iphone photo apps, self timer play. It freed me up, big time. Since returning home, I've been experimenting a big more with self portraits, and I can feel how healing, fun, creative, and important it is. It about seeing ourselves differently, kindly, and having fun. Viv says it's about being our own beloved. Love that. And so profoundly TRUE!
That's Viv. Isn't she cute? Thank you, Viv! Check out Viv's site - it's full of all sorts of goodness. And may she inspire you to be your own beloved :)

Don't you just love this wall, friends! It showcases somce our newest releases in canvases, crosses (they're chunky and awesome), our new cloche, banner , our new cameos and more!
These new cameos are gorgeous! They're a new format for us and I have to say, they're stunning. The dark wood gives it a more substantial decor feel and they look amazing all paired together. I absolutely love all three of them. Hello Love. Dear World. And I Choose Hope. Did I mention that they has easels on the back so they're great for tabletop/desk OR you can hang them on the wall, too.
The new fabric banner is totally beautiful. The words on the flags are Wish - Create - Dream big - Love wide - Soar - Shine - Imagine - Celebrate. Wouldn't this be lovely in a studio or hanging over a bed or even outside? Love.
Just in time for Mother's Day, this sweet angel girlie puts a lump in my throat and a smile in my heart. She reads: Mama. Because you held hope for my life even before I was born, because you gave me a name and a beginning to a beautiful life journey, because you taught me that kindness really does matter and that believing in myself gives those around me permission to do the same, you are my beloved mom and I am your daughter, always connected, always together. Available here.
Beautiful construction with super thick sides, the new crosses are an excellent addition to our wall art collection! See the full cross collection here. We're also loving our new cloche which we think makes a beautiful center piece on any table! I can see it in an outdoor setting holding sweet treats or a candle! And if you're feeling really creative, I think it would be an awesome piece to hold earrings - just sayin!
Thanks, friends. Our mission is to continue to create products that blend creativity with meaning, beauty with function. I so love what I do.
Warmly,
Kelly Rae

Your Heart Will Never Be Alone
(Signed/matted prints available. here.)Your heart will never be alone.
I'm loving this new painting. I am so grateful for the support I've felt along the way. My life transformed in astonishing ways the second I decided to leap into the creative life circa 2006 (you can read through my small steps right here). I feel like I've got some invisible wings, soaring on the support of what I now know to be true: that we are all meant for the journeys of everyday courage, that ordinary small steps lead to extraordinary changes, that we all deserve the kind of support that buoys us in times of struggle and in times of celebration. That we are meant to find the sacred in the ordinary, to heal our hearts, to seek inspiration for ourselves and then to radiate it outward. That success isn't about what we've accomplished, but more about who we've become.
I've been thinking a lot lately about my early journey. The journey of childhood, the teen years, my early 20s. My 20th high school reunion is coming up soon and I suppose I've been reflecting, even diving into my diaries I kept as a teenager. In between the reflection, I just find myself incredibly grateful to have made it to today. Life is precious. I don't want to miss a thing.

Juicing + smoothie update!
After my last/first juicing post, I thought I'd give you guys an update as we've made a couple big juicing routine changes.
First, we totally invested in a Breville juicer, and HOLY SMOKES there is a huge difference between the old Juiceman that we were using and this Breville. It's like the difference between a Vitamix (best thing ever) and a regular blender. Huge difference. There are lots of Breville juicers out there, but we went with this particular one. Totally worth the investment for something that we're using a few times each week. No more having to stop mid juicing and unclog the machine. And the motor is so much better that we're getting a ton more actual juice of our veggies, especially the kale.
Another big change we made is that we're juicing one mason jar (two tops) at a time and consuming our juice rather quickly (within 15 minutes) vs storing it in the fridge. There are varying opinions out there as to whether you lose the nutrients if you store it, so we figured we be on the cautious side of that conversation.
As for our juicing recipes, we're still following Lacy's exact shopping lists and recipes (scroll down until you see "Green Juices") and haven't been disappointed yet. If it doesn't taste yummy, I can't consume it so I'm feeling grateful that I have her site as a quick resource.
(spinach, frozen blueberries/strawberries, nondairy yogurt, flax oil)In addition to juicing about 3 times per week, we are still making smoothies with our Vitamix about three times a week. You lose most of the fiber with juicing but with the Vitamix, you keep the fiber so it's a nice balance. I'd say every other morning we make a smoothie in the Vitamix and every other morning we juice.
We bought our Vitamix last summer and it's another investment that has made a HUGE impact on our daily lives. We use it to make smoothies (no pulp from kale/spinach/etc - none!), hot soups (yes, it heats your soups!), sorbets (yes, it freezes too!), EVERYTHING. True loves the smoothies and they take seconds to make now. Love!
Generally, we throw in mostly spinach. Add a bit of frozen fruit. A little cold water. Chia seeds, flax oil. Sometimes non-dairy yogurt (love the Amande brand) for super smoothness. And sometimes a little bit of almond butter for protein.
**********
This is a whole new world for me - this juicing and smoothie-ing, but I have to say I've been doing it now for nine months and I can't believe how easy and tasty it is. Total life changer! Here's to life long green drinks!
Curious if you guys have fave recipes or sites that you use for recipes. If so, please share em! I'd love to know!

around here lately + big news!
I've been falling into a really lovely pattern of not over doing it! It feels like spacious loveliness. Like, breath. Somewhere along the line I convinced myself that I must over achieve and lately, friends, I've let it go. It's been an ongoing struggle these last few years (a product of hustling very hard to transition into this full time work), but I think I've made yet another step, perhaps a huge leap, in the direction of trusting that I don't need to keep piling more work on myself. I do enough. I am enough.
I owe so much of this inner soul work on this subject to my friend Brene Brown who has taught me all the ways in which perfectionism is a vulnerability armor, how shame resilience is key, and how daring greatly just might mean (for me) making choices that are aligned with my enoughness which (for me) means less is more.
From these photos it looks like it's been dates for just one, but really it's been dates with two. John and I are having some of the best conversations we've ever had. I am finding myself amazed how much I still don't know about him. I hope we're still surprising one another into old age.
The weather has been downright awful, yet the tulips are a bright spot, as is our little free library that continues to bring smiles every single day.
We've been spending lots to time indoors. True's Gran Gran recently gave him the above travel easel set. Highly recommended. It comes with all sorts of art tools and it's all very compact and kid safe/non-toxic. LOVE this thing.
When it is sunny, we've been rushing out the door to feel the warmth. Portland weather is always fickle around this time of year. We've all learned to rush outside for the sunbreaks when they arrive.
In other news, my gift products have gone worldwide with international distribution. This is a big big big deal and we're all quite excited about it. We've been getting all sorts of emails from our friends in the UK, Canada, Australia and more sharing with us their happy surprise when they stumbled on the products in their local stores. Yes, it's true! We've gone worldwide! Can't thank you enough for your support to make this crazy dream real. International retailers, if you want to order our products for your boutique/store, send us an email to hello[at]kellyraeroberts.com and we'll send you all the details.
Thank you. Like, forever.

Kelly Rae
