Haven't you ever wondered? Lists of Companies that DO & DON'T Test Products on Animals
Because, seriously, it's 2011, people. Do we really still need to test a product that's already been repeatedly tested on animals? While not a card-carrying member of anything, periodically I remind myself of what products I choose to buy based on the latest lists. And yeah, it sucks because I hate finding my favorite on the lists of companies that do, and then having to find a new favorite that doesn't.
For a list of Companies that DO test their Chemical and Products on Animals, click hereFor a list of Companies that DO NOT test their Chemicals or Products on animals, click here Keep in mind that many products claiming to be "cruelty free" or "not tested on animals" actually contain ingredients that have been, at some point, or are still being tested on animals, even before the cosmetic company purchased the ingredient.
The alleged "cruelty free" claim often refers to the final product; however, the majority of animal testing occurs during manufacturing of the ingredient or through the supply chain. Therefore, these products actually contain ingredients where animals are subjected to chemical testing. Unfortunately there are large companies stating "we" do not test on animals, when in fact they are contracting to an outside source to conduct testing on animals. Labels and claims are still confusing and misleading to consumers. The above lists help to identify the large corporations still known to be subjecting animals to chemical and product testing.

Roadside Marker Love a/k/a Why I'm Compelled to Stop & Read Every One
One of my favorites, in Aurora, Texas.
Here's some info from GoRVTexas (link to article here): Welcome to Aurora... located just off US 287 west of Rhome heading toward Bridgeport (near Fort Worth), a community that in the late 1800s boasted of being the burial site of a crashed space alien pilot who apparently slammed into a local windmill. So convincing (or well known) was the story that the Texas Highway Department erected a historical marker near the cemetery where the "creature" is said to be buried.
Many thanks to the History Channel's Ancient Aliens series for making us point at the television and scream "We've been there"!!!

My wait is over...

Anyone remember me whining about the news reports re: the robot incursion into the great pyramid's secret chamber and finding images - but no posting of said images? Well, wait no more - Score! http://tiny.cc/pyramidsecrets.
And yes, this article is from May...but I've been busy. *wink*

Soldiers' Angels - Wrapped in the Holiday Spirit
Soldiers' Angels are committed to providing Wrapped in Holiday Spirit care packages to every Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
From the website: "This winter, an estimated 100,000 U.S. military personnel will be serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, in combat environments or in support of combat operations. Some will be have been on multiple deployments--spending yet another Holiday away from the loving arms of family and friends. We want them to know that they are remembered, that we are thinking of them during the winter Holiday Season, and that we are grateful for their service. Since we can't all wrap our arms around them in person to show how much we love and appreciate them, Soldiers' Angels needs your help to make sure each one of America's heroes is Wrapped in Holiday Spirit."
How can you help?
Send items for packages through Six Months of Christmas - This month donate packages of hot cider & cocoa (individually marked & just add water type)Make a Blanket of Belief (we have a no-sew-option!)Donate a complete care package (select "any soldier" at checkout when it asks for an address)Donate to help cover shipping costsSpread the word with a general info flyer, or a flyer about sending holiday greeting cards [pdf files]

Wouldn't This be a Dream Come True?
For sale: Historic waterfront property with a spectacular, 50-foot-high view of Lake Michigan. Featuring solid, century-old cast-iron construction, painted distinctive red. Comes with its own Fresnel lens for signaling ships.
Translation? The US General Services Administration is selling off lighthouses and offering 12 historic lighthouses for free, though takers must be eligible state or local entities, nonprofit corporations, historic preservation groups, or community development organizations.
The lighthouses are being made available as part of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. The federal government owns about 250 lighthouses, which are maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Once critical for navigation along the nation's coastal and inland waterways, many have been made obsolete by the advance of radio, radar and satellite navigation.
Under the terms of the legislation, if the Coast Guard decommissions a lighthouse the government tries to find a caretaker agency or buyer rather than see the structures demolished or fall apart from neglect.
Despite my lack of funds, my hands are making little grabby fists as I type.
Interested in more info? Here's a link to Yahoo News.. As well as a link to the GSA site re: the free ones.

Soldiers' Angels - Blankets of Hope
My initial exposure to the amazing world of Soldiers' Angels was an invite from a friend to join her sewing team. While there are many different sewing team opportunities listed on the website, I've always been partial to the Blankets of Hope Project.
Here's more info from the website: "The Blankets of Hope team creates unique, handmade blankets to send hope, support and gratitude to America's wounded and veterans. Used on hospital beds, wheelchairs, and transport litters on medevac flights, Blankets of Hope bring the message that each servicemember is loved and not forgotten. They are included in our First Response Backpacks and Vet Packs sent to Combat Support Hospitals in the war zones, major medical facilities in Germany and around the world, and selected military hospitals and veterans centers here at home."
Why it matters: "Wounded soldiers are quickly evacuated from the battlefield, leaving behind their clothing, personal equipment, and their brothers in arms. During this time of pain and upheaval, the Blanket of Hope provides warmth and comfort for the wounded soldier. Most importantly, it shows the soldier that someone cares about him and is thinking and praying for him at that very moment. This is very powerful for a wounded hero... the knowledge that someone cares. We are very proud of this project and what it has done for those brave wounded heroes."
To better understand the impact a simple blanket can make, please visit the website to read comments from recipients.
Unable to sew? Consider a Blanket of Hope kit, where the blanket is already sewn and has a white fabric panel in the middle you can write on or decorate with stencils and fabric pens.
