Why Facts Don’t Matter
I heard an astonishing story the other day while listening to NPR about how, despite compelling evidence, a lie will persist if told enough times. An individual can watch video evidence that the person has lied yet still believes the lie because it was repeated so many times. Being an avid student of social science, I was compelled to find the research to back this up, and it was unbelievable. This is how the liar-in-chief has so many of his followers believing everything he says. Repeat the lie enough times, and you can get people to swear the earth is a square (yup, one step further from the ridiculous lie that the flat-earth society clings to). So, I know y’all are dying to learn what I discovered.
There is a concept called TBR or truth-by-repetition, which has been researched as early as the 1970s.One possibility for how TBR occurs is something called processing fluency, which is a fancy term for the fact that our brains have an easier time processing something we’ve already heard before.For a long time, the research suggested that TBR only worked on statements where the truth value was ambiguous or unknown. A study in 2015 applied TBR to statements that participants had prior knowledge of, such as, “The Atlantic Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth.” These studies furthered our knowledge of TBR by suggesting TBR could work on any kind of claim whether the truth value was ambiguous or not. But because the US has a large swath of people who aren’t particularly well-read or possess even basic geography, the studies were inconclusive because too many individuals lacked the knowledge on the fact that the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth.So, the researchers decided to test out the TBR theory on past knowledge using the statement that the “Earth is a perfect square” and “Benjamin Franklin lived 150 years.” Believe it or not, after repeating this lie just five times, participants started giving credence to statements that were obvious lies. Thus proving that TBR does not just work on ambiguous or unknown statements.Ironically, this works in the opposite direction. Which is why people are so skeptical about the media. A study in 2020 found that repeating claims at high frequency decreases their perceived truth value. The bottom line is that repetition is strongly linked to perceived truth, and depending on the quality and context, the correlation can be either positive or negative.In our fast-paced world with social media and avenues to distribute lies to millions of people at once, propaganda, which is what we’re really talking about, is a highly effective tool for politicians, and Donald Trump is a master at this.

Labia Puff Surgery
In my attempt to lose myself in things other than the news, I generally watch the SNL YouTube clips on Sunday or Monday. This past week, on Weekend Update there was a hysterical news story about the popularity of labia puff surgery, Michael Che joked that Labia Puffs was the original name for Honey Smacks. Then, a picture of the cereal was displayed behind him, and I busted a gut in laughter. So…I just had to do some research about labia puff surgery because, you know…that’s what I do!
So…what is labia puff surgery…well think Botox for another set of lips. Yup, the procedure injects fillers or fat into the labia major (the outer lips of your vulva). Apparently, this surgery is quite popular, creating a more youthful, rejuvenating look to your vulva. Because collagen production slows down with age, a woman’s labia begins to look wrinkled and old, sagging like other parts of our bodies. Things that make ya go hmmm…now we have to worry about our coochies looking old, along with our tits and ass. For anyone interested in labia puff surgery, the cost is around $5,000. The Economic Blackout
Today is the broadly advertised economic blackout, widely known as a boycott for, among other things, large companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Target. I am fully prepared to participate today, but I did want to know more information about it. For example, will it really make a difference? Will it negatively affect the small businesses and my beloved Sapphic authors? I certainly do not wish to do that. So…I did some research and here is what I learned.
The People’s Union USA takes credit for initiating the no-spend day, which was founded by John Schwarz, a meditation teacher who lives near the Chicago area.In addition to this economic blackout, more is planned by this grassroots movement, including specific weeklong boycotts of major companies like Amazon and Walmart, which includes Whole Foods, owned by Amazon. Side note: We haven’t shopped at Whole Foods for a very long time, ever since Bezos took it over. It isn’t the same, at all.Other boycotts of places such as Target have been led by faith leaders and labor advocacy groups such as the one led by Nina Turner due to the controversy over abandoning DEI initiatives.Despite all these efforts, sadly, many believe it will have only a slight effect. However, because the market slice of the overall pie is so small now with all the competition, Marshall Cohen, a chief retail advisor at a market research firm, believes it will have some impact. Other marketing professionals claim the economic blackout day might have an impact, but it won’t be sustainable.However, boycotts have been known to be effective in varying degrees. Unfortunately, the major boycotts as a result of backlash to the support of LGBTQ+ in recent years (Target and Bud Light) have had the most impact. Bud Light is still feeling the outcry. GOYA, which was boycotted after praising Trump, actually saw a small increase, especially in red areas of the country. Thankfully, that small increase was not sustainable. This is not good news for us. If we’re going to make an impact, we need to be as steadfast as MAGA and the hard right.As many have suggested, if you’re not on board with the economic blackout today but want to still make your voice heard, the suggestion is to make a point of purchasing from small businesses, items from Amazon that support LGBTQ+, sapphic authors and books, or businesses owned by persons of color.
My book, The Love Demand, goes live tomorrow. I suppose that is the good news because the timing is better for me. Holding off on purchasing the book until it goes live versus pre-order may be a good thing to boost the numbers if you choose to purchase from Amazon because I am, of course, a sapphic author. And, if you choose to purchase the book through another avenue, like directly from my publisher or Bella which will also be carrying the book, those options are also available tomorrow. Links are below. Side note: Dani, the narrator who did Unconventional Lovers, is currently working on the audible version of the book! It sounds awesome so far. Ultimately, I support any and all boycotts that will help this country move in the opposite direction of where it is currently headed. If only we could all get our shit together to achieve this goal. We must surgically boycott, protest, call the injustices out, and do everything we can because the consequences of sitting on the sidelines and moaning about what is happening to our country are not going to turn the tide.

Broken Heart Syndrome
As usual, I can’t help myself from scrolling through the news, despite the increasingly depressing shit happening in our country. An article caught my eye, though, being a romance writer…The headline was…”She suspected a heart attack, but was diagnosed with broken heart syndrome.” Yup, there is an actual health condition resulting from a broken heart. To be fair, it’s broader than a broken heart. The technical term is Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and it occurs as a result of a sudden and dramatic weakening of the heart muscle after a stressful event.
I thought back to an event in my life over twenty years ago…before I met my wife. I thought I was having a panic attack, but as I read the article, damn the symptoms were all too familiar. It fit. I had broken heart syndrome and didn’t even know it! Sure, I knew I had a broken heart, but I never imagined it could have such a profound effect on my actual heart. Broken heart syndrome is caused by an increase in a cardiac enzyme called troponin, in the blood. Ironically, this same enzyme is also elevated by a heart attack. However, there’s a big difference between a heart attack and broken heart syndrome. The key difference is that when a heart attack happens, there is a blockage in or more arteries. In broken heart syndrome, the echocardiogram (fancy device creating images of the heart) typically shows a characteristic ballooning of the heart muscle. Stress hormones flood the heart, creating this balloon effect. The adrenalin surge then causes the heart muscles to weaken. The good news is this condition is rare, even though I suspect many people have experienced a broken heart at least once in their life. And, it is entirely treatable and not as dangerous as a heart attack. Of course, the syndrome is most common in women over the age of 50. I wasn’t over 50, but I’ve always been an overachiever.
Since Artist Free Zone is loosely based on that time in my life, it would have been the perfect time to write about my experience with broken heart syndrome, but I didn’t. Although, I will never forget that time when the racing heart and pain occurred in the kitchen of my little chalet. It feels like only yesterday when this occurred, but it’s been well over twenty years. Perhaps now that I know what actually occurred, I can write that into a book, versus writing about panic attacks, like I’ve done in other books. Happy Valentines Day!
So…I know I’ve written about the history of Valentine’s Day before, so I went on a duckduckgo search (my new way to search for obscure information due to Google’s recent asshattery) and found an article about 25 fun facts on this day of love. As a romance writer, I’ve got to throw away any cynical tendencies I might have and go full romance on this special day. So…here are some of the fun facts that I didn’t highlight when I went into the history of this day in a previous blog…
People really did wear hearts on their sleeves…not real hearts, you morbid people. No, they were in the form of men (and maybe women dressed as men…one can dream) drawing names at a Roman festival to determine their suitor for the year and wearing her name on their sleeves throughout the event. Or knights (hopefully again some Lady Knights) dedicating their jousting matches to a lady of the court by tying one of her belongings — like a handkerchief — to their arm as a symbol of defending her honor.The oldest known valentine was written in prison. The man’s name was Valentine and he penned a letter before his death to a young girl and signed it, “From your Valentine.”To discourage suitors, vinegar valentines, also known as a “penny dreadful” were sent with mean sentiments complete with insults and rejections.Four US towns are named Valentine or Valentines in Nebraska, Arizona, Virginia and Texas, each with their own unique traditions.Teachers receive the most Valentine’s cards annually. Go teachers. They certainly deserve it having to deal with all the crap with banned books and erasure of DEI.This year, the average person will spend $188 dollars to show their love on this day. Holy smokes…I must be really cheap.We don’t forget our furry friends on this day. According to the National Retail Association, Valentine’s Day gifts for pets culminated in $1.189 billion spend in 2022.Heart-shaped boxes were started in the 1860s by Cadbury. Although, chocolate dates back to 450 BC because, duh, who doesn’t love chocolate!Conversation Hearts started as medical lozenges by a Boston pharmacist named Oliver Chase in 1847. Apparently, he invented a machine to simplify the production of the popular sore throat remedy. But it was his brother who found a way to print the sweet messages in 1866.XOXO hasn’t always meant hugs and kisses. The “X” dates back to the Middle Ages when people signed documents with it as a symbol of faith, resembling a cross —often sealing it with a kiss to show sincerity. The “O” has two versions of an origin story; some link it to the game tic-tac-toe, while others believe it represents the shape of a hugging embrace.I love this last one….Love birds are real, and they mate for life. They are brightly colored parrots who form lifelong bonds. And…the word pining originates from these birds when erratic behavior often linked to depression happens when they are separated from their mate or flock (according to the Smithsonian). Also, as an aside…two female lovebirds can form a pairing (I looked this up).

Pubic Hair Positivity
This blog is going to be a short one…because I’m still in Mexico enjoying the sun! But, when I read this article about there being nothing wrong with pubic hair, I just had to blog about it! So…after reading the the Pubic Hari Positivity movement was born out of a TikTok social media influencer who was radicalized by…gasp…a model in a bikini with “a full bush,” I just knew this was going to be my topic this week.
The article went on to reinforce the view that personal grooming is a choice. Many women across the world, especially those in developing countries do not touch their pubic hair. In fact, there can be some health risks to removing all your pubic hair because according to the health experts in this article, pubic hair has a purpose. There were also cautionary tales depending on the method of hair removal, that could cause irritated skin, ingrown hairs, rashes, etc. I’m going to admit that in my youth after learning that one of my fellow rugby players shaved down there and went on to rave about the feeling, especially during intimate time…well, I had to try it out. I did enjoy the smooth feel in the way I enjoy the smoothness of my legs after shaving…but…and this was the biggest downside…it itches like hell when the hair starts to grow back. And…you don’t want to be scratching down there in public! There are many theories about the purpose of pubes…
To have a visual representation of sexual maturity.To gather and distribute pheromones to attract a sexual partner.To keep dirt, dust and bacteria out of the vagina (although the author seriously questioned this because they’d not seen any patients with a dusty vagina).As a protection against STIs…and ding ding ding, this was the winner because of actual research that those who removed all their pubic hair were more likely to contract STIs, especially molluscum and warts because of the close skin contact that is more exposed. There was also a slight uptick in chlamydia or gonorrhoea.
I honestly cannot remember if I’ve ever described in detail whether any of my characters groomed in a specific manner…I might have because I distinctly remember a Facebook conversation about a brazillian wax. Learning to be a Dominatrix
Yup…you, too, can learn about BDSM from a bona fide Dominatrix who teaches legitimate classes. I read this article about a woman in the UK who teaches a dominatrix masterclass, which beyond instruction on safe BDSM, can also teach women to be more comfortable being dominant in the bedroom. Of course I was so fascinated by this article that I had to do an internet search via my new search engine duckduckgo that I am now using instead of Google (that’s a whole other story). So…for all those budding dominatrixes out there, classes are available in the US as well, including academies that offer certification. Although, not everyone can earn this certification. I suppose, like higher education, they have their standards.
As I read the article, I was amazed by the author’s experience and the side benefits of the class. The class not only taught about the different toys used, safe practices, how to deal with a brat (a submissive who challenges the authority of the dominatrix), how to properly paddle someone, and so much more. But the most astounding thing learned from the class for this woman was how to be more assertive in general, not just in the bedroom. For her, the hardest part about wielding power was learning that she could. The class gave her the confidence to explore a side of herself without fear or shame and opened her to exploring many other new experiences. And isn’t that worth it? No matter what a person’s personal preferences regarding bedroom activities, gaining confidence is a good thing.
I’ve only written one short story with BDSM. I had to make sure I got things right by asking one of my Facebook pals to beta read it for me. I suppose if I had taken a class, I would have had more first hand knowledge. Most authors do a lot of reading to research topics and physical research often takes a back seat. Embarrassing Sex Questions
I’m baaaack…after only a very short hiatus while I was having fun at Girls Just Wanna Weekend. So I came across this article about seven questions experts say almost everyone is too embarrassed to ask. And of course I saved it for a blog post! However I only intend to cover five of the seven because I suspect that y’all would be mainly interested in those five…two were about penis size and if something a person enjoys makes them gay…LOL! Anyway…without further ado…here they are with the answers!
What comes out when I squirt? Nope, not pee, although chemically it is similar to urine with additional small amounts of a substance called PSA (prostatic specific antigen) from the Skene’s glands (female prostrate). Squirting is apparently different than female ejaculation because the liquid that comes out of female ejaculate is a thicker milkier substance that is entirely from the Skene’s glands.Am I masturbating too much? Hell no! With one caveat…if, and this is a big if, because it is so rare… if your masturbation habits have interfered with your daily life, relationships, job or other responsibilities it might be worth addressing. But even masturbating several times a day is NOT a problem. It is totally okay if solo sex happens more often than partnered sex.Will using a vibrator desensitize me? I know I’ve covered this before in a previous blog post, and the answer is no. While there may be temporary clitoral numbness right after use, that goes away. However, it is true that if you use a specific method repeatedly for an extended time period it can temporarily be more challenging to achieve orgasm in other ways…so the answer is to mix things up!Is something wrong with me if I have weird sexual fantasies? Nope…let that kink flag fly! Fantasies are safe outlets and don’t necessarily translate to what you might be interested in acting out in real-life. And even if you are interested in trying out the most bizarre sexual fantasy in your head, that’s okay too, as long as both parties are consenting adults in that fantasy.Is there anything I shouldn’t be putting in my butt? Uh, yeah…but a better question is what’s safe to insert in the anus. There are specific toys designed for anal play…obviously those are okay, like anal plugs or vibrators specifically designed to go into the anus. Sex toys designed for anal insertion will often have a flared base, because it would not be good to have anything stuck or lost inside! Stay away from scented products (lubes) or chemical irritants, or anything that numbs the area (you actually want to feel the sensation, not mask what may be too painful because that could lead to harm…sorry, those who are into BDSM…that’s just what the article says!

Queefing
Oh yeah…I am so going there. I know it’s been two weeks since I did my weekly blog, but every time I thought I was turning a corner, my bad cold or whatever it was, came roaring back. I finally feel like myself again, and what better way to come back than to write about queefing. So…what is queefing, some of you might ask? I say some of you because I know there are some who know a queef is a vaginal fart (there is really no indelicate way to say it…so I prefer direct and to the point). Now let’s talk about the other interesting things I learned about queefing.
Queefing can happen at many inopportune times, including during sex, in the middle of yoga class or during a visit to the gynecologist.Queefing is not the same as passing gas, even if they produce a similar toot-like sound.The technical explanation for a queef is that it is an involuntary body function caused when air is pushed into the vagina, gets trapped in the folds of the vaginal canal (rugae), and is then released.How does the air gets inside the canal…well…when fingers or sex toys go in and out of the vagina, they bring in additional air. Basically, this can apply to other things like putting in a tampon or menstrual cap, or the gynecologist inserting a speculum.Because your pelvis is tilted upward in the “doggy style” position, this creates more opportunity for a queef to occur. Another chance for a queef to slip out is when abruptly changing from one position to another. This probably explains how why it happens in yoga sometimes.No need to be embarrassed about an accidental queef, because according to OB-GYNs, almost every woman has experienced this at least once in her life. But if this does embarrass you, keeping those fingers or toy inside while changing positions can lessen the chance you will queef.Queefs are odorless, unlike their counterparts from that other hole! Sorry, unlike a regular fart, you can’t hold in a queef!Women who have given birth or women who have weakened pelvic floor muscles may be prone to more queefing. This is because when the pelvic floor sags, there is a greater likelihood of air entering the vaginal canal.So when it happens, embrace the noise. It’s a lot less awkward to acknowledge, joke about, and laugh, versus making it awkward by pretending it didn’t happen.The only time to be worried about queefing is if you notice a smell or feel pain because that could be an indication of a vaginal infection or possible fistula (a connection between the lower part of the large intestine and the vagina).
So…queef away and laugh about it with your partner. Sex should always be fun and never embarrassing! I am quite sure I’ve never written about a queefing incident, nor do I remember ever reading about one in any of the sapphic novels I devour. Perhaps I should, so that we all feel better about this very natural phenomenon.
