I know 2014 is the Year of the Horse, but around here we're calling it ...
The Year of the Goldfish!
About the book:
Galileo. Newton. Salk. Oppenheimer.
Science can change the world . . . but can it go too far?
Eleven-year-old Ellie has never liked change. She misses fifth grade. She misses her old best friend. She even misses her dearly departed goldfish. Then one day a strange boy shows up. He’s bossy. He’s cranky. And weirdly enough . . . he looks a lot like Ellie’s grandfather, a scientist who’s always been slightly obsessed with immortality. Could this pimply boy really be Grandpa Melvin? Has he finally found the secret to eternal youth?
With a lighthearted touch and plenty of humor, Jennifer Holm celebrates the wonder of science and explores fascinating questions about life and death, family and friendship, immortality . . . and possibility.
Publishing date: August 24, 2014

Be the Match
Earlier this year, I received an email from a friend of one of my fans. She wrote that her friend, Natalie, had been diagnosed with acute leukemia and was having a hard time in the hospital with the treatments. She was hoping I would consider sending a note of encouragement because Natalie was a huge
Boston Jane
fan.
I sent a package and connected with her family and have been following Natalie's progress ever since. She seemed to have been doing better but has since had a relapse and will now need a bone marrow transplant. No one in her immediate family is a match so they are hoping that someone in the Bone Marrow Registry Network will match with her. And they are encouraging her friends to please register.
Natalie is a beautiful and brave young lady with an incredible spirit, and I would like to help her as much as possible. And you can help, too.
Be the Match is a bone marrow registry that connects patients with life-saving bone marrow donors. It's easy to join. Just click HERE to find out how to join the registry.
Let's help Natalie overcome this so that she can grow up and make her own luck just like Jane.

Sometimes the best present you can give ...
Is a
story
.
But it can be hard to get books into the hands of kids who really need them. Luckily, there is a terrific organization out there that provides access to new books for children in need...
From their website:
To date, First Book has distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada. First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education by making new, high-quality books available on an ongoing basis.
Please consider donating to this wonderful organization. Or if you are working with programs and school serving kids in need, go HERE to get more information about ordering books.
This is a present that will last a lifetime.

Forget Black Friday! It's all about ...
Small Business Saturday!
This Saturday, November 30th, I will be a "guest bookseller" at two awesome children's book shops in California! Having authors as guest booksellers was the brain child of the incredible young adult author, Sherman Alexie.
I will be hand-selling my friends' books, signing my own books, and generally helping you get your shopping done for the holidays (hey, I did work at the Gap in high school).
So come on out and support your local indie book store this Saturday!
SATURDAY, November 30
11:45 am -1:15 pm - The Reading Bug - 785 Laurel Street, San Carlos, CA
2:30 - 4:30 - Hicklebee's - 1378 Lincoln Ave, San Jose, CA 95125
Hope to see you Saturday!

NCTE is going to be NERD-tastic!
I'm heading to Boston to attend one of my favorite conferences -- NCTE! And why is it so great? Because it is full of nerds. (Nerds that love books, that is.)
The mission of the Nerdy Book Club is simple. From their website:
If you love books, especially those written for children and young adults, then you are an honorary member of The Nerdy Book Club. Like us, you probably always have a book along to read, a title to recommend, and time to talk about works held dear.
If you don't know The Nerdy Book Club, then you need to click here right now and meet some of the most passionate teachers and educators in children's literature today. It's a community of people who love books and love to get kids to read.
And I get to be on a panel with one of the three founders of The Nerdy Book Club, the amazing Colby Sharp. Here's a brief video so you get an idea of how enthusiasm for books can change a classroom.
Mr. Sharp and I will be talking about different ways for teachers to connect readers to book creators.
Here's the panel info:
Friday, November 22
2:30 – 3:45 PM Program: Relevance, Relationships, and Reading Lives: Fostering Students' Reading EngagementSheraton, Gardner Room, 3rd Floor
4:30 – 5:30 PM Random House AutographingHynes Convention Center, Booth #907
Saturday, November 23
9:00 – 10:00 AM Perma-Bound Autographing Hynes Convention Center, Booth #1262
10:00 – 11:00 AM Anderson’s Bookshop Autographing Hynes Convention Center, Booth #1631
So come say "hi" to me at NCTE! I'll be hanging with all the cool kids -- the nerds. (I guess you could say that I've found my people.)
Me. Nerdy then and now.

A Storybook Night!
As the daughter of a U.S. Navy pilot/physician and a U.S. Navy nurse, I was humbled to be the Honorary Chair of the Storybook Ball for United Through Reading last weekend in San Diego.
What is United Through Reading? It's an incredible organization that helps connect the children of military parents who are stationed abroad by READING BOOKS. It's a simple, powerful, amazing idea!
From the UTR website:
Our vision is that all children will feel the security of caring family relationships and develop a love of reading through the read aloud experience. United Through Reading is the nation’s first nonprofit to promote the read-aloud experience for separated military families. United Through Reading offers deployed parents the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children which eases the stress of separation, maintains positive emotional connections and cultivates a love of reading. At nearly 200 recording locations worldwide, Marines, Soldiers and Sailors, National Guard, Reservists and Airmen, can read to their children from units on ships, in tents in Afghanistan, on bases and installations around the world and at 70 USO centers worldwide. Over one and a half million military parents, spouses and children have benefited from the program since its inception.
Please be sure to check out the United Through Reading website and be a hero by donating to this wonderful organization that keeps families together through reading!
