Skip the College Tour and 9 More Things You Need to Know About a Campus Visit

Ah, Summer! For those of us with up and coming high school juniors and seniors, this means getting prepared (mentally and emotionally) for a college tour. I am on my last of five children, and while the process is different for every kid, I’d like to offer a little advice that I’ve learned along the way.

10 things to know about a college tour

10 Tips to Know BEFORE a College Tour

1. First of all, have your child schedule his/her own college tour.

Yes, you need to talk to them about appropriate times and so forth, but once you’ve...

Last Day of High School: From A Dad To His Daughter

Meg Sullivan’s dad Tom showed her a little love every morning by peeling an orange and putting it into her lunch bag. The small gesture started when she was in kindergarten and ended, last week, on the last day of high school.

My dad has been peeling oranges for my lunch since kindergarten & on my last day of high school I got this instead pic.twitter.com/N8B2qb43qA

What You Need to Know About College Orientation

Soon-to-be freshmen will be invited to a college orientation session either during June/July or for a few days prior to the beginning of classes in the late summer/fall. Some schools have both! As a former college president who oversaw orientation at two schools and participated in orientation when my two daughters left for college themselves, I want to offer some advice to parents on how best to navigate what is the very beginning of your child’s college career.

Hooking Up : Parents Are Worried About The Wrong Thing

Hooking up is a term that means everything and nothing. For teens and young adults it is a way of saying something happened while leaving the specifics unstated, for parents it is a term that denotes a baffling world of uber-casual sex over-fueled by alcohol and potentially a cause for real concern. We worry while they are in high school, but hope that by staying close we can impact their behavior. We worry a whole lot more as they head off to college where both parents and teens have heard t...

5 Reminders Why Our First Job Is So Important

Like our first kiss, or our first date, or our first time behind the wheel, the day we walked into our first job is a day that’s forever engraved into our memory. We remember that electric, scary, and intimidating feeling of crossing the threshold into that new role and taking on a brand new stage of life—the stage where we become an active contributor, an independent person, a bread-winner. (Even if it’s only in the form of tiny crumbs to start.) And it was inspiring.

We never forget our first jobs

I remember turning six...

Dear Kids, This Is Our Family’s Last Graduation So, Listen Up!

Dear Kids (because you’ll always be my kids even when you’re older than I am now),

On the occasion of our family’s last high school graduation, I’m sharing the obligatory old-person advice to young people on the verge of taking on the world.

Letter to kids from mom at last graduation

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Or listen again, because I mean it extra now:

Please call home. Texting works, too. Either way, Dad and I want to stay in touch. Tell us the good, the bad, the ugly. Don’t be afraid to be honest. We understand more th...

One Dean’s Advice: 4 Things for Parents to Know This Summer

As our kids head off to college we know our relationship with them is going to change, but how it will change is not at all clear. I’ll admit to being scared out of my mind when I sent my first son off the college. We had spoken almost every day of his life and now I knew that was going to end. Like most college kids of my era, I talked to my parents once a week keeping the call short and, in the back of my mind, I think that is what I feared the most.

Barnard Dean's advice to parents of college freshmen

Here is the good news. Most kids talk (...

What Made Me Cry. Hint: It’s Not Just Graduation

Our amazing children work their way through twelve years of school; they participate in sports, in academic clubs, in service organizations. They make friends and navigate the ups and downs of relationships of every kind. They make decisions on their summer jobs, social lives, and future professions. They are capable, and we know this beyond the shadow of a doubt, because we, their mothers, have made it our mission in life to raise them.

Why moms cry during the 9 month leading up to graduation

We’ve made countless decisions on their behalf, using...
