Cole on Gaza: State Dept Subverts Geneva Conventions
Juan Cole on the flotilla - and be sure to watch the passenger/crew video from Yonatan Shapiro on site. Cole's conclusion is worth quoting: "State Department Foreign Service Officers asked to help contravene the Geneva Conventions should refuse and should blow the whistle on and sue whoever gives them that order."
Athens - Day 6
I arrived in Athens on Tuesday afternoon. It has been a hectic and incredible week. Our team of some 3 dozen passengers is a remarkable group of people.
Though I have had little time to see the city of Athens where we are busy running about, it is in many ways, an ideal way to visit - sneaking in a little tourism in between work. There is a purpose to being here.

The Only Cargo on the Next Gaza Flotilla Is Our Letters
Focal Points has posted an adapted version of my post this morning. It should be noted about the title that this is true only of the U.S. boat. Other boats in the flotilla will be carrying assorted humanitarian-related supplies.
U.S. Boat to Gaza Final Pre-Departure Update
The U.S.-backed blockade of the Gaza Strip is "collective punishment" - a war crime under international law, as established in the Fourth Geneva Convention. It must end. That is why I will shortly be setting sail in the Freedom Flotilla II -- Stay Human.
We will be departing on our trip very soon. I will be in New York for a press conference with other passengers on Monday morning, and flying to Athens in the afternoon.

On June 14, [we] the passengers on The Audacity of Hope sent this letter to Pres. Obama. Copies went to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and 12 members of the Administration and Congressional leadership. Call the White House – 202-456-1111 – and tell them you agree with the letter and expect the U.S. to take action to uphold the rights of peaceful citizens to safe passage on the seas.
