On a recent trip to Berlin I was struck by the enormity of what human beings are capable of. Hitler was a piece in the puzzle but there has to be followers to a movement, supporting and carrying out the acts. They have to share the blame, a significant part of the blame. Also any retaliation should be measured and any nation going to any extreme, history is not going to forget.
The number of people killed in World War II is 50 million plus (see the wiki link below to get a perspective). The most number of people from a single country is Russia. You could argue a significant other genocide has not been reported as well, the one that China and others were being inflicted upon by the Japanese. A significant number of Jews, Roma and Sinti people along with homosexuals and handicapped were methodically killed by Nazi Germany. What a price numerous nations had to pay to be free!!
One of the museums I visited was checkpoint Charlie and it was interesting to learn about the events to the Berlin Wall collapse and artifacts including US involvement around the war however what was interesting was the top floor where it depicts, I would like to think activists/ actions who/which made a difference in the modern world which includes the UN resolutions. I was stuck by the journalists/human right activists who lost their lives killed brutally reporting on Chechnya and other conflicts around the world. One person who was missing there was Aaron Swartz who was striving for a better world for all of us. If you don't know who he was I would recommend reading about him at the wiki link below, however be prepared for the consequences of your actions..freedom is not free, there is a price to be paid.

Color & Freedom
Book Excerpt
When will we be color & race blind? When will borders between countries fade?

Freedom
We continue to be not free. A simple case in point is this recent incident of
Rachel Dolezal lying about being black. Lying of course is wrong and should not be condoned however this focus on race in the US & elsewhere is not going to take us anywhere.
Step one would be getting rid of the race checkbox on forms.
Step two would be to talk about people in terms of people and not in terms of race. Stop using the term a black man did this, a white man did that in media and also in our daily conversation.
What is the point but the pigeonholing continues - black, white, gay, Asian, male, female … - do we really need to put that on forms? How is this information used? Is it important? I can understand putting blood type, in case you are in an accident, but pigeonholing based on color, caste, & creed needs to go. Not cool, if the strive is for equality.
