Fool's Gold

I thought I'd let you know that I am not to be featured in X magazine. For what appeared was to be an article on women writers, was not.

When I first talked to Y on the phone, it seemed that there was an interest in my work, then two of my books, Gone and Slings & Arrows, became the topic of interest because of the terrible thing that happened to my daughter.

Slings & Arrows is the non-fictional account of her terrible life. Born with transposition of the main arteries, two holes in her heart and a blocked valve, she had major heart surgery at 8 months, however, at the age of two and a half, she was severely brain damaged, because her heart stopped and she was revived too late. She survived for a further 17 years.

Gone, was the answer to the question I had during those waiting years until her second and final death. The question was: 'Where had my daughter gone?' Because who she had been [her essence] had vanished. It is a unique fantasy, inspired as it was by this tragic event.

I was as honest as I could be with Y, answering all her questions and providing as many photographs as she wanted - except that I could only give two of Samantha and I together, as I was usually the one behind the camera, and I don't like my picture taken. And I don't have any of Samantha after she was brain damaged [who would?] I didn't want any reminders of what she had become [a twisted, painful shell of what she once was]. This fact, however, is the reason why the magazine do not want to feature me or my books.

So you can see that it was not about women writers or books, just a story to titillate the readers, but without pictures, it was worthless. What does this say about the readers, I wonder?...Or what the magazine think about their readers?

I was led to believe I would be featured until that point [no pictures]...well, it seemed positive.

Nothing can be done, I know, but I needed to write about it. And phrases like, 'if you can think of something that would 'merit' a feature in the future, please let me know', are really insulting to me and my daughter's memory. I will say that I replied with, 'if Samantha's story holds no 'merit' then nothing will'.

I really had hoped that this may have been my lucky break [after more than 15 years of trying] and that my books [especially these two - both written to help and inspire others to hope in the face of loss] would at last receive the attention they deserve.

I do believe in my work, and that I can write well, but unfortunately, I don't have the 'hype' machine behind it.

This experience only confirmed my belief that the media really has no soul - no wonder I never read magazines or newspapers.

I was a fool to believe that my books would reach gold at last.

Phew, now that feel's better *&^%(*

Reads for a wet summer

I enjoyed these stories, you may too...and the weather being horrible, reading is a great alternative...

Mine of course but I'll restrain myself :)

The Dream Maria Savva

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Dream-ebo...

I was intrigued from the start of this story, as it began with a delicious mystery, which continued to develop and then unfold with pleasing affect.

A clever tale, where its heroine, believable and likeable, helps the reader relate and sympathise with many of the `love' issues, yet pins us to our seats wondering what will happen next.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to those who are fascinated by that `something extra', that something which allows the imagination to wander where enigma is the watchword.

Into The Light Darcia Helle

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Into-The-Ligh...

Into The Light brings to us a mixture of humour and mystery, as it deals with what could happen after we are dead. It shows how we don't always appreciate the 'imprint' we leave while we're are alive, and that maybe we were more than we thought.

It is a book that deals with the human condition, with such themes as love, sorrow, regret, grief, jealousy and of course, death, yet, attempts to answer the many questions and thoughts we might have about 'the mysterious journey' beyond our comprehension.

It also gives us hope and I was delighted with the proclaimed ideas.

Altogether, a read that is thought-provoking and fun.

I would certainly recommend it to others.

Disappearing Home Deborah Morgan

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Disappearing-...

I don't want to give away any spoilers but from the first introduction, I wanted to take Robyn home and nurture and protect her.

This story is one of heartbreak and hope, where dreams are measured in cartwheels and curry with chips is a luxury.

I absolutely loved the writing, so exquiste and real, so much so that I didn't want the story to end.

Being a writer myself, I learnt much from this excellent piece of writing and urge for more of the same.

If I could have given twice as many stars allowed, it still wouldn't have been enough.

Superb - thank you.

Toonopolis: Gemini (Toonopolis Files, #1)Jeremy Rodden

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toonopolis-Ge...

Funny and unpredictable from the start, I loved this story - the whole fantastical farce of it - brilliant. It was clever and my smile was wide for most of the time (when I wasn't laughing). Thoroughly good with some great graphics.

Clever idea.

The Heart of a Fox T. Isilwath

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Heart-Fox...

Spectacular! Good way of showing time in which the story begins, May 6 2012, that is until... The beginning gives the reader plenty of reasons for what might go wrong therefore wants to know more.

It has an easy-to-follow style. I like the use of identifying nicknames for characters - especially good for 'those passing through' - Geek From Hell. The style has a great way setting the scene /info needed without being boring.

Good humour undertone - liked 'Joanna' at once.

A clever mix of reality /fantasy /cultural history.

What a fantastic way to travel - if only we could be sure of our destination!

A spectacular and wonderful story, fantastic characters, impeccably researched and perfectly crafted! I didn't want to put it down...can't wait for more.

Highly recommended.

Will Work For Food Regina Pukett

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Will-Work-for...

I didn't know what to expect with this short story - it was brilliant. I will not give spoilers, but everyone should read it! Keep them coming, please.

Smell My Feet! 10 Seriously Silly and Sweet Short Stories for Squirts Martha Rodriguez

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Smell-Serious...

I really enjoyed this collection of stories. They were funny, delightful and charming...and clever.

I would certainly recommend this book for children, and parents that wish to share the wonderful insight of Martha's tales.

*****

There now, quite a range - something for everyone...and mine of course :)

Good reading!

Just a few more that I think everyone will enjoy:

About Billy by Brian W Fisher
Brian W Fisher

http://www.amazon.co.uk/About-Billy-e...

Billy's world is threatened by war...'whatever that meant'...but his six year old mind is filled with the excitement of his first hunting trip. The extended visit with 'Uncle' Jake and 'Aunt' Dolly expands his knowledge, not only of the practical but also self-reliance and confidence.

Jake, the gentle giant, who can 'toss deers on his back and chop down trees without breaking into a sweat'...('undred a month')...helps Billy, amongst numerous things, discover the secrets of the forest, the wonders of carving his own totem pole and his talent for drawing.

These adventures are the first of many escapades where we see how Billy faces the wrathful Miss Kirby when back at school, and puts to use his own bow and arrows (to mention but a taste) along with his 'pals', Chalky, Stinker and Squint, some other members of 'The Robin Hoods'.

The meaning of war and 'floppy necks' become even more apparent to his young mind while on the hunt for shrapnel amongst the devastation of whole streets and his father off to volunteer with the Home Guard.

About Billy is more than a snapshot of this period of history but a superb album. It is a sensitive and informative story brought to life by 'real' personalities, particularly the tenderness and understanding between father and son.

Getting to know Billy through the six-year time span was a pleasure and anyone reading the story would have to agree with Jake and Dolly, that he has the heart of a soldier and the soul of a poet.

A wonderful read.

This book is the first in a trilogy and you will want to read them all.

*

Just Justice by Brian W Fisher
Brian W Fisher

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Just-Justice-...

How many of us have wished we could change things...make the world a better place, especially if we see something prejudicial to our sense of fair play? 'Just Justice' builds a case for those wishes to come true.

The characters are believable, the plot, delicious, surprising and not a little shocking but this book is an excellent portrayal of modern life.

This fantastic story is thought provoking, intriguing and captivating though most certainly well worth reading.

*

In The Name of Allah by Brian W Fisher
Brian W Fisher

http://www.amazon.co.uk/In-The-Name-A...

An incredible insight into the ways of modern warfare.

Jack Kirkham takes the reader into the fight to vanquish, it could be argued, the unseen enemy, though leaving no doubt he is doing the 'right' thing. Yes, there are violent scenes from which many would turn their eyes, however, like today's news, we must face its reality.

A fantastic, if disturbing story, which, I believe, everyone should read so that, together, we may work towards a safer world.

Highly recommended.

*

No Justice by Darcia Helle
Darcia Helle

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Justice-Conte...

Sent this book some time ago, I've only just been able to read it and I'm so glad I did.

An explosive start, which hooked me at once. I really liked Michael and his 'night job' - many of us would love to be able to dispense real justice without being caught.

Good, believable characters bring alive this story - which in itself was fast-paced and easy to read (a difficult job for any author), making it seem deceptively simple - yet brilliantly done.

Highly recommended for those who like an exciting 'action' story, giving a sense of satisfaction throughout.

Coincidences by Maria Savva
Maria Savva

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0...

I've read all of Maria Savva's books and I have never been disappointed - Coincidences is no exception. From beginning to end, I enjoyed its storyline, characters and 'reality'.

I never like to give spoilers, but I will say that the story picks on a subject that relates to many people and uses sensitivity and intelligence to make the point and deal with the relative issues. The author is able to 'get into the minds' of the characters in such a way that the reader cares about what will happen to them.

Even though it was a fast-paced book, I was impatient with my reading, as I wanted to know what happened - such was the cleverness of the writing.

Yes, I loved it, and would highly recommend this book.

A challenge from Maria

Lucky 7 is a blog challenge. I was challenged to take part by author Elpi Pamiadaki who is a writer I met on Twitter.

The challenge is to blog 7 lines from unpublished works of fiction. Here are the instructions:

1. Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript (fiction or non-fiction)
2. Go to line 7
3. Post on your blog the next 7 lines, or sentences, as they are – no cheating
4. Tag 7 other authors to do the same

The following is from page 77, the next 7 lines after line 7...

*

From my 'nearly ready' novel, Lost Shadows.

She looked nervously at the kitchen door that stood open to the hall, but knew she’d never make it.
“Do I have to say it again? Give me your hand; I want to see what you’re holding.”
She’d never been able to understand how he always knew...knew when she was hiding things.
And why was he still holding the kettle?

*

I tag the following authors so as not to repeat Maria's:

Billy Young
Adrian L Hawkes
Jeremy Rodden
Martha Rodriguez
Benjamin Jones
Candy Ann Little
Alex Sumner

Thanks, Maria

Just having a moan

Fed up!!! Why can't I get some good reviews? I know people are entitled to their opinion (no, scratch that, they're not!) Sigh - there must be some of the 15,000 people who have downloaded my work that actually like it? sob, sob sob...just received another bad one for Misadventures Of Fatwoman...

Or is it true that even bad reviews /news /exposure is better than none?

Moan over - to anyone who has read my work, I'd love a review. Of course if you don't like it you must be honest (*more sobs*)

FYI - I've let the offers of four of my books run for a while longer - just 77p.
