The Ides of March Polka poem

Hard to believe my dad died 35 years ago. I wrote about it in this poem.

The Ides of March Polka

My letter opener does not show the blood
as my friend slices open
the letter denying me the equipment I need
To be more independent.
My friend says
“Well it was expensive”
Et tu Brute?
It’s the Ides of March
So polka. Just polka.
I hate this time of year
the half wintry not yet springtime
Unpredictability of it all.
Much like living with spiraling medical costs
from a disability
without a net.
It’s the Ides of March
So polka. Just polka.
My father died on the Ides of March
I flew home the next day.
We buried him on St. Patrick’s Day
which might have ruined that day for me forever
had not my nephew been born on it.
It’s the Ides of March
So polka. Just polka.
It’s that time of year.
My Polish friends bake me
Green soda bread
Every St. Patrick’s Day
Then take me to their club at night to dance.
It’s the Ides of March
So polka. Just polka.

Book riot post

I love the site Book Riot. Their recent post about how folks should not apologize for what they're reading made me start thinking about how a number of my friends do that -- whether it's the genre of the book, the fact that it's a YA (young adult) book, etc. Or maybe they feel pressured to say they're reading the newest book out when they have a list of older books they'd rather read. I don't apologize for what I read but there have been times I've chosen a book I think I 'should' read even though I wanted to read something else, even when there was no legitimate reason to (such as analyzing a writing style e.g.) Anyway, thought I'd share the article here to see if any of you relate:

New Short Story collection up: On the Boardwalk

A new short story collection of five stories about homelessness is up now at amazon. On the Boardwalk is about a homeless widower who meets a teen runaway. In Something of Worth, a homeless alcoholic is blackmailed by a little girl who sees him steal a coat. Dear Boy is about a runaway with developmental disabilities whose mother has died. Wheezy is about homeless friends who unite to help out one of their own. Down by the Tracks deals with the stark realities of a death witnessed by a 13 year old homeless girl.
