Book Review: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Blurb:Can Anna find love in the City of Light?
Anna is happy in Atlanta. She has a loyal best friend and a crush on her coworker at the movie theater, who is just starting to return her affection. So she's less than thrilled when her father decides to send her to a boarding school in Paris for her senior year.
But despite not speaking a word of French, Anna meets some cool new people, including the handsome Étienne St. Clair, who quickly becomes her best friend. Unfortunately, he's taken —and Anna might be, too. Will a year of romantic near misses end with the French kiss she's waiting for?
My Review:Anna and the French Kiss is a cute contemporary romance that's easy to breeze through.
Anna was sent to spend her senior year at a boarding school in Paris because her writer father (think Nicholas Sparks) wants to impress people. Anna is less than thrilled to leave Atlanta, her friends, and a budding romance with a friend behind to live in a country she knows little about and doesn't speak much of the language.
But once she arrives she makes new friends, including the attractive yet unavailable Etienne St. Clair. Maybe living in Paris won't be so bad after all. But could St. Clair see her as more than a friend?
Overall, I enjoyed this book although I found Anna whiny and kind of unintelligent at times. She reminds me of everything the French claim Americans to be. I loved St. Clair and Anna's other new friends although I didn't like the end between Josh and his girlfriend, although I understand it had to make way for him to be a romantic interest in the third book of the trilogy. The author's descriptions of Paris made me feel like I was right there with Anna, which is always good. To be honest, I read this book after There's Someone Inside Your House and I have to admit I liked that book better.

(Audio)Book Review: See How She Dies by Lisa Jackson
See How She Dies by Lisa Jackson
Blurb:London Danvers was kidnapped as a child from her wealthy family. Over the years, many women have claimed to be her, trying to lay claim to the long-lost heiress's inheritance. Among them is Adria Nash, who has arrived in Oregon, claiming to be London-but, unlike the others, she's different: she knows personal details only London could have known. And there is someone who does believe her-who is watching her every move, waiting to see how she runs, how she screams, and how she dies...
My Review:Twenty-years-ago, at just shy of five-years-old London Danvers was abducted by her nanny from her wealthy family's hotel in Portland, Oregon and was never seen again. Why did the nanny take her? Where did she take her? What became of little London?
The disappearance tore the already rocky Danvers family apart. To Whitt Danvers, the patriarch of the family, London was his little princess and he went to his grave not knowing what happened to his beloved youngest child. Something broke inside Kat Danvers, London's mother and Whitt's second wife, after her only child was taken and she died, falling from the 19th floor of a hotel after taking a a dangerous cocktail of vodka and pills. Or did she? Second son, Zachary was beaten up on the night of London's disappearance and thought to be a suspect in the kidnapping. Was he involved? Could it have been one of the other Danvers children: Jason, Trisha, Nelson? The head of the rival Paladoria family? Or someone else connected to the Danvers family? Someone else you'd never suspect...
Now, in 1993 a woman by the name of Adria Nash arrives in Portland claiming to be the lost London. She isn't the first but she does bear an eerie resemblance to Kat. Could she be the lost heiress come back to claim her birthright? The Danvers family will do everything in their power to prove Adria is a fraud out for the family fortune, even as Zach and Adria grow close, an undeniable, potentially taboo attraction between the two.
But someone else is watching from the shadows, watching Adria as she searches for the truth. Someone that will do anything to keep the mystery of London's disappearance and Kat's death a secret. Can Adria find out who she is? Or will a killer end her life before she has a chance to find out the truth?
I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing and I genuinely didn't know who the killer or kidnapper was until the very end. Since I listened to the audiobook, I will say I enjoyed the narration very much. The narrator didn't put me to sleep and her voice didn't annoy me.
A couple things I didn't like was the initial jumping back and forth between the 1970s and 1993 - I wish the author would have had part one as the events leading up to / the night of London's kidnapping, part two being the days/months/years after, and the rest of the book being the year 1993. I also didn't like the Trisha/Mario Paladoria part of the book. I got the forbidden-star-crossed-lovers-Romeo-and-Juliet type thing but Mario didn't seem sincerely interested in Trisha and Trisha was a total nutcase. Also, toward the end of the book when Anthony Paladoria announces to his son that the feud is over - that didn't make much sense to me. I mean I agreed with it but there was no reasoning behind it. Lastly, on an audiobook standpoint I wished the chapters could have been split up a little more. Nearly an hour on one chapter was a bit long in my opinion. You could have split it into two chapters, even if the chapter count doubled.
Initially I wondered why they didn't just do a familial DNA test to see if Adria was related to the Danvers family, although I questioned how advanced DNA was in 1993, but then at the end I understood why the author didn't plot it that way.
Overall, I became hooked on this story and didn't want to stop listening. I couldn't wait to find out what was going on, if Adria was London, if she and Zach had a chance, who kidnapped London, and who the stalker/killer was and the result was a satisfying end. I'd definitely read/listen to this book again!

"What I'm Reading" Wednesday #111
This “WIR”-Wednesday I’m catching up with a few eARCs starting with...
Chaser (Dive Bar #3) by Kylie Scott
Blurb:Given his well-earned bad boy reputation, Eric is having a tough time scoring.. When single Jean moves to town, she seems heaven sent by the sex gods. Only problem is, she not only wants nothing to do with him, but it turns out that she's pregnant.
Starting over in a small town, Jean is determined to turn her wild lifestyle around and be the kind of mother she always wished she'd had. Since local bar owner and all round hottie, Eric Collins, is now determined to steer clear of her pregnant self, it should be easy. When she goes into labour during a snow storm and her car slides on some ice, it's Eric who comes to the rescue.
There seems to be a bond between them now, but is it enough? And can Eric give up his manwhore ways to be the man Jean needs?
Why I Requested This Book | What I Think So Far:I really love Kylie Scott’s books and was excited to sign up for the Chaser Blog Tour. While I don’t like the Dive Bar series as much as the Stage Dive series I really like Eric and I was drawn into the book from the get-go. So far the only thing I’m not liking about the book is Jean’s name. But that’s not anything I can control. The book so far is a breeze to read and I hate to put it down. Check out my full review on April 20 for the InkSlingerPR blog tour!

Exclusive Excerpt:
A shrill ring wakes me from a restless sleep—I had the dream again. My phone bounces around on the unfamiliar night stand that I must have left it on last night. “Goodnite,” I rasp, my voice heavy with sleep. “Detective, this is dispatch,” the disembodied voice from my phone informs me. “We were told to notify you that the body of a male child has been recovered at the rocks near the bottom of the falls. Possible match for your missing person.” “I’m on my way.” That's all I need to know, and I am throwing back the blankets that are tangled around my body—my naked body. I pull my jeans on—without panties—and then my boots. I quietly search for my bra, hopefully not waking . . . not waking . . . I look over at the bed where a man with warm brown hair and a stubbled jaw sleeps on the bed that I just vacated. Nope, not ringing any bells. At least he's good looking. I shrug. I should be embarrassed about letting some random pick me up at a bar the next town over. But I’m not. This case has been . . . rough . . . and I needed to blow off some steam. Will I call him again? Uhh, no. Will he call me? He’d have to find me first. Did he have a good time? You betcha. I see my bra hanging from a lamp shade and grab it, tucking it into my back pocket. I pull my tank top and t-shirt on, having found both rumpled on the floor. I reach into the front pocket of my jeans and find —thank God—a hair tie and toss my long, inky hair on top of my head in a messy bun. I pull on my coat that had been dropped by the front door. I palm my phone and pull my keys out of the same pocket the hair tie came out of. I step out into the New Jersey cold without ever looking back at . . . Mike? No, that's not it. I shrug to myself, fuck it. I beep the locks on my car and climb in. I unlock the glove box and feel the weight of my badge and sidearm in my hand as I pull them both out of their hiding spot, placing both on the dash. I fire up my nondescript Tahoe and head towards tragedy. My name is Claire Goodnite and I’m the best damn detective in the state of New Jersey and you better believe I'm coming for you.

Book Review: One Week Girlfriend by Monica Murphy
One Week Girlfriend (One Week Girlfriend #1) by Monica Murphy
Blurb:Breakout sensation Monica Murphy takes the New Adult genre by storm with the deeply emotional, completely addicting story of Drew and Fable.
Temporary. That’s the word I’d use to describe my life right now. I’m temporarily working double shifts—at least until I can break free. I’m temporarily raising my little brother—since apparently our actual mother doesn’t give a crap about either of us. And I always end up as nothing but the temporary girlfriend—the flavor of the week for every guy who’s heard the rumor that I give it up so easily.
At least Drew Callahan, college football legend and local golden boy, is upfront about it. He needs someone to play the part of his girlfriend for one week. In exchange for cash. As if that’s not weird enough, ever since he brought me into his world, nothing really makes sense. Everyone hates me. Everyone wants something from him. And yet the only thing Drew seems to want is . . . me.
I don’t know what to believe anymore. Drew is sweet, sexy, and hiding way more secrets than I am. All I know is, I want to be there for him—permanently.
My Review:Twenty-year-old Fable Maguire is working two jobs to support herself, her mother, and her thirteen-year-old brother, Owen. Rumor has it she gets around. When twenty-one-year-old Drew Callahan needs a pretend girlfriend to take home as a buffer between himself and the demons of his past back home for Thanksgiving break he approaches Fable and offers her the one thing she can't refuse. Money. Enough money to make things easier for her family for a few months. She has no choice but to agree.
But Drew is not at all what Fable expected of the college football star and his life back home is anything but picture perfect. Fable isn't what Drew was expecting either. They have to survive seven days together pretending to be in love, but when their fake relationship starts to become so much more real will Fable be able to help Drew fight off his past so they can have a future? Or will a manipulative person from Drew's past and a buried secret torpedo their burgeoning relationship?
I bought this book about a year ago through a discount bookseller but it sat in my living room collecting dust since I got it. It wasn't until I hit a rut in the sports romance I'm writing and I thought it would put me in the mindset I need to be in for my writing that I finally picked it up.
Wow. I have no idea why I waited so long! This book is fast-paced, addicting, and so sexy! A lot of authors turn the football star into having a bad home life and boy was this secret a doozy. I loved Fable and I liked that the author chose to not have her as a fellow student.
Drew and Fable's chemistry and relationship was perfectly plotted, they both question whether they're good enough for the other person and their both have an air of being not as everyone else portrays them. I absolutely hated Adele, which was kind of the point and I really wish Drew's father would have caught onto her.
When I finished this book I was dying to find out what's going to happen in the sequel. Overall, I loved reading One Week Girlfriend and if you're new to this author and already a fan of authors like Abbi Glines, Cora Carmack, and Erin Watt I think you'll love this book.

Book Review: The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
Blurb:
Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic meets the Salem Witch trials in this haunting story about three sisters on a quest for revenge—and how love may be the only thing powerful enough to stop them.
Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…
Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.
Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.
Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.
Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.
But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.
My Review: Every summer the locals of Sparrow, Oregon dread and the tourists delight in the return of the Swan sisters - three sisters who were drowned as witches more than two hundred years ago. Each summer on June 1st they return to get their revenge by invading the bodies of local girls and drawing unsuspecting boys to their watery grave.
Penny Talbot knows the Swan Season is more than a silly legend or a game, but she has more important things to worry about, like her mother who lost her mind after Penny's father disappeared three years earlier.
The last place she wants to be is the annual Swan party on the night before the beginning of the Swan Season but she can't say no to her friend Rose. When a newcomer, Bo Carter, saves her from a local bully she reluctantly lets the outsider return to the island she lives on with her mother for a job in exchange for room and board.
Then the Swan Season begins and soon the bodies begin showing up in the water. Bo doesn't believe in the Swan sisters, but he's about to. Meanwhile, Penny can see which local girls have a Swan sister inside them, but why? What secrets is she hiding? What really happened to her father and caused her mother to lose her mind? And why has Bo really come to Sparrow?
They both have secrets they don't want to share and they definitely shouldn't be falling in love. Does Penny hold the key to stopping the Swan sisters from coming back ever again? And can Bo ever forgive Penny when he finds out the truth about what she's hiding?
The Wicked Deep is a beautifully written gem of a book. The story grabs you from the first page, mainly told in the perspective of Penny Talbot although there are chapters that take you back two hundred years to the reason the Swan sisters return every summer.
I loved every minute of this book, it was a quick but powerful read that I didn't want to put down. This book really tugged at my heartstrings, especially at the end. This book is slated as Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic meet the Salem Witch Trials, which I definitely saw hints of but it wasn't a take off or a copy of those but it's own breathtaking story. Yes, the Swan sisters were branded as witches and killed. Yes, Penny lives on an island away from everyone else with her mother, but this book is more than that. It's about love and loss and sacrifice. It's about small towns and being judged for being different. It shows that when times get tough, we really haven't evolved much as a society at all.
Overall, this is a book you definitely should read as soon as possible. Shea Ernshaw is an author to look out for because her debut was absolutely perfect.
My Rating:★★★★★5 of 5 Stars!

Spring Into the Season With These 13 Upcoming Spring Releases!
Spring is just around the corner...
so put on your rainboots and dance around in puddles because these thirteen spring releases are almost in the world and you won't want to miss them!
1. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw (03/06/2018)
Why You'll Love The Wicked Deep:
The Wicked Deep is a rich, beautifully written tale of curses, true love, and sisters. It's Practical Magic meets Hocus Pocus meets the Salem Witch Trials. Every summer solstice the Swan sisters return from the dead to "borrow" the bodies of local girls so they can charm boys into joining them in their watery graves. It's their revenge and the town knows all about it; tourists flock to Sparrow every summer for the Swan Season. This book is dark, atmospheric, and you'll gobble it right up!
2. To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo (3/6/2018)
Why I'm Excited for To Kill A Kingdom:
To Kill A Kingdom has a gorgeous cover for starters, and tells the tale of a siren who loses her voice and must bring back the heart of a human prince back to the sea queen or else. It appears to be a twisted take on The Little Mermaid.
3. The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco (3/20/18)
Why You'll Love The Heart Forger:
The Heart Forger continues Tea's tale of how she became banished as she in present time travels with The Bard, her resurrected love, and her horde of beasts to overthrow a kingdom and right wrongs. The story is deeper than The Bone Witch and you'll be dying for the next book!
4. The Continent by Kiera Drake
(3/27/18)
Why I'm Excited For The Continent:
Is it wrong of me to say the reason I want to read this book is because of the controversy last year? I hadn't heard of it before that and if I'm being honest I'm still not sure if its "my kind of book" but it has nothing to do with why people were complaining. I'm not that sensitive of a reader and I look forward to making my own opinion.
5. Lost Crow Conspiracy by Rosalyn Eves
Why I'm Excited for Lost Crow Conspiracy:
I adored the first book in this series, Blood Rose Rebellion and I'm both excited and unsure about seeing where things go next.
6. As She Fades by Abbi Glines
(4/3/18)
Why You'll Love As She Fades:
As She Fades is possibly my favorite Abbi Glines book to date. The writing is next level, the story has an unexpected twist you won't see coming, and it begs the question, "what if?"
7. Beyond A Darkened Shore by Jessica Leake
(4/10/18)
Why I'm Excited About Beyond A Darkened Shore:
I'm loving all of these Viking inspired novels coming out this year and this one sounds part Norse, part Celtic, and completely awesome!
8. Sky In The Deep by Adrienne Young
(4/24/18)
Why You'll Love Sky In the Deep:
Another Vikings inspired book, Sky in the Deep is just everything. It has a fierce female lead, amazingly written battle scenes, mythology, and romance.
9. Defy the Worlds by Claudia Gray (4/3/18)
Why I'm Excited For Defy the Worlds:
Defy the Stars was a little out of my comfort zone of reading but I fell in love with it anyway. It was such a quick breeze of a read and the way it ended left me longing to see what happens in Defy the Worlds. 10. Ash Princess by Lauren Sebastian(4/24/18)
Why I'm Excited for Ash Princess:
I read an excerpt of Ash Princess online and was hooked on the beginning of the story so I've been impatiently awaiting this book's arrival for months!
11. Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody(4/10/18)
Why I'm Excited for Ace of Shades:
This book seems like such a unique read and I've heard nothing but great things about it!
12. A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas
(5/1/18)
Why I'm Excited for A Court of Frost and Starlight:
1. Autobuy author
2. Favorite Series
3. Gorgeous cover...
need I say more?
13. Legendary by Stephanie Garber
(5/29/18)
Why I'm Excited for Legendary:
Legendary is Tella's story and I'm really hoping she's a more worthwhile heroine than Scarlett. I'm still on the fence about this one.
