Pioneer Press: Fighting diabetes in St. Paul, one YMCA at a time
Nearly 80 million Americans are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes – a common condition that doctors say is a gateway to other costly health problems.
But in the Twin Cities, a select group of these "pre-diabetic" patients has been enrolled in a program at local YMCA chapters that preaches weight loss and exercise as a way to halt progression of the disease.

CNN: Wall Street rating agencies' corrupt system
"Let's hope we are all wealthy and retired by the time this house of cards falters."
This quote, taken from an e-mail sent by a Standard & Poor's official in 2006, says it all.
Just two years after it was written, the house of cards that S&P helped build collapsed and roiled the global economy. And while I welcome the news that the Justice Department has launched an investigation into S&P, I imagine it will conclude what a lot of us have long known: S&P made record profits by knowingly handing out sterling credit ratings to complete junk.

Stillwater Patch: Franken Speaks On Education Reform, The Bridge and Debt Crisis In Stillwater
Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) called for education reform during his speech at Thursday's Rotary Club meeting in Stillwater.
Franken said he believes much of the reform needs to come from amending the No Child Left Behind Act.

Eden Prairie News: Sen. Al Franken delivers Meals on Wheels to Eden Prairie resident
Florence Moynihan was beaming as Sen. Al Franken arrived at her Eden Prairie doorstep with a meal in hand. Franken was delivering her meal through Eden Prairie's Meals on Wheels program. The senator wanted to highlight the importance of programs like Meals on Wheels, which predominantly serve home-bound seniors. Approximately 200 volunteers in Eden Prairie help make the program possible and connect the clients of Meals on Wheels to needed food and friendship.

Chaska Herald: Ceremony marks start of county fiber-optic project
Local and national government officials grabbed shovels in Cologne Tuesday to mark the start of $7.5 million fiber-optic project designed to enhance high-speed communication throughout Carver County.
Carver County applied for and has received nearly $6 million in federal stimulus money for the project. The county will provide nearly $1.5 million in funding for the project, which is the required 20 percent match of the total project cost.

Brainerd Dispatch: Walker, Little Falls airports to receive infrastructure support
U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Al Franken, D-Minn., Tuesday announced more than $1.3 million for infrastructure improvements at northeastern Minnesota airports. The funding comes from the Federal Aviation Administration through the Department of Transportation.
