Twin Cities Business: Obama, Other Leaders to Speak at Convention in Mpls

President Barack Obama kicked off a three-day trip though the Upper Midwest on Monday with a stop in Cannon Falls, a small town in southeastern Minnesota.


And another event will have him back in Minnesota before the month's end.

St. Cloud Times: Paynesville gets federal grant for airport

Paynesville Municipal Airport will receive a $147,250 federal grant to improve its runway, taxiway and overall infrastructure.


The grant comes from the Federal Aviation Administration, according to a joint news release from Sens. Al Franken, D-Minn., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

With world markets suddenly sagging under the weight of the Standard & Poors downgrade of Treasury bonds last Friday, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) is disturbed by the monopolistic power of the ratings agencies – and still determined to curb their abuses, as he tried to do last year with an amendment to the Dodd-Frank banking reform bill.

AgriNews: Senator concerned about ethanol's future

Expect direct payments to take a hit in the next farm bill, Sen. Al Franken told a Farmfest audience Aug. 3.


The Minnesota Democrat said the super committee of 12 Congresspeople could shape the new farm bill by their recommendations for trimming the federal budget. The supercommittee was authorized by the deal crafted to raise the debt ceiling.

National Journal: This is Not Funny

In his scant two years in the Senate, Al Franken has tried hard not to be funny—and to avoid the spotlight.


The former Saturday Night Live comedian and current freshman senator from Minnesota says he still does no national TV, despite being asked regularly, and he only rarely talks to the national print media.

Chaska Herald: U.S. senators to attend fiber network kick-off

Both of Minnesota's U.S. senators plan to attend the Aug. 16 kick-off ceremony for Carver County's new fiber network.


The optic ring, over 122 miles long, will connect 86 entities at 56 sites throughout Carver County, including city, county and township governments, schools, fire departments, public safety towers and law enforcement agencies.

Redwood Falls Gazette: Klobuchar, Franken visit Farmfest

Minnesota's U.S. senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar are not happy with the debt ceiling compromise passed into law this past week, but they voted for it anyway.


Yet, they added, at least in this first round of balancing ag was not impacted. That likely is not going to be the case later this year when a round of cuts in the area of $1.5 trillion have to be made.
