Weekend Fun

You won’t believe what I did this past weekend! I can hardly believe it myself. I went down a water slide! Yes, that water slide you see pictured above. I have been having a lot of "good days" lately, so I put my energy to good use and played with my family!
We spent time at a pool on Saturday. I enjoyed walking around in a chilly pool for exercise, and I enjoyed relaxing in a hot tub. Most of all, I enjoyed a ride down the water slide!

Will helped me climb all the way up the stairs. The steps...

Book Review: And It Was Beautiful

And It Was Beautiful by Kara Tippetts For nearly three years Kara Tippetts wrote regularly on her blog, Mundane Faithfulness. Kara was a church planter’s wife and mother of four, and she blogged about her life and journey with cancer. Kara passed away in March 2015, but her words continue to encourage and inspire today.
Through her blog, and through her books, Kara Tippetts has shown the world how to live well and die well. And It Was Beautiful is Kara’s final book, and it is primarily a collection of many of her blog posts. Those...

Beyond the Prayer Sheet

Beyond the Prayer Sheet: Including the Chronically Ill as an Indispensable Part of the Body of Christ
“But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.”  1 Corinthians 12:18-22
The church needs its chronically ill members. God’s Word says that every believer is a vita...

Daily Joys

Last week was a hard week. We all caught a bad virus and spent the week at home with fevers, coughs, muscle aches, fatigue, and a little bit of nausea to top it all off. Adelaide got sick on Sunday, and the rest of us soon fell like dominos! It is the first time all four of us have been this sick at the same time. We are so grateful for those who helped us through the week by bringing food and cough medicine.
We are finally on the mend, and it feels like we are coming out of a fog. It is good...

God Is Good

“The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” Job 1:21
Have you ever heard a statement like one of these?
"The test results came back clear. Praise the Lord!"
"The cancer is gone! God is good."     "The surgery was successful. God is faithful."                    Those are perfectly fine statements. God is good, He is faithful, and we should praise Him.
But statements like these sometimes cause me to p...

The Beautiful Truth

Ken and Joni Tada
“God designed my disability not to make me ‘independent,’ but ‘interdependent.’” - Joni Eareckson Tada
My life with dysautonomia places a burden on my husband, children, family, and friends. I'm not sure if I will ever completely get used to that. It is hard to be a burden. It is hard to see others have to sacrifice so much in order to care for me. It is especially hard to see the daily burden that my illness places on Will, William, and Adelaide.
And yet, at least for now, this is the way it...

Choose Joy Weekend

A few weeks ago my family took a weekend trip, and it was so wonderful that I just have to share it with you! In January there was a Choose Joy book signing in Sioux City, Iowa. I live too far away from most book signing events to be able to attend, but this one wasn't too far away! Will said he could take me.
I was very excited about it, but as the day drew nearer I kept wondering if I should actually go. I was so tired, and I knew that the trip would set me back and make it even h...

Busy Hands: Houndstooth Infinity Scarves

This houndstooth scarf was one of my big crochet projects last year. I used this free pattern from the ELK Studio blog. I used a much finer yarn, though, so I had to do more stitches per row to make the scarf the right width. It took me several months to make this scarf. Working with a fine yarn, and switching yarn colors often, took a lot of time, but the finished product was worth it!

Adelaide liked the scarf so much that she asked me to make one for her too. Of course, I was happy to do tha...

Choose Joy: When Healing Doesn't Come

Choose Joy: Finding Hope and Purpose when Life Hurts
Each Monday in January I have been sharing quotes from Choose Joy by Sara Frankl and Mary Carver. I hope that you have enjoyed Sara's words as much as I have. If you want to purchase the book, it is available at Amazon, Christian Book, and many other places.
Today I am sharing quotes from Sara about healing and prayer. Sara was completely confident that God could heal her, but she knew that sometimes healing was not God's plan. She prayed for a heart that would seek after His desires instead o...

Book Review: Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World

Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World
This month I have been reading Kristen Welch’s new book,  Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World . Kristen is the author of  Rhinestone Jesus  and the blog, We Are THAT Family. She is also the founder of Mercy House and Fair Trade Friday. Based on Kristen’s experience and previous writing, I knew that Raising Grateful Kids would be an excellent book, but it exceeded my expectations!

"A Christ-centered home starts with us as parents. It involves intentionality and hard work and inviting Jesus to be part of our lives." Kristen's family was living the American dream several ye...
