My New Favorite Seat in the House

In July Will and my sister, Krista, rearranged furniture in our house so that I could have one of my recliners next to the big sliding glass doors in our office. This allows me to recline and watch William and Adelaide play outside. Previously I had to stand at a window to see the children playing in the backyard. I could never watch for more than a couple of minutes because my blood pools in my legs when I'm standing. Now that I can lie down in a recliner and see out the window, I can watch...

Surviving Summer

This is a challenging summer for my family and me. My body is weak and tired, and I am struggling to take care of William and Adelaide while Will is at work. I stay in bed most of the weekend so that I can partially recover for the next week. My body is unable to completely recover in only two days, so each week is harder than the one before. I’m borrowing spoons from the fall to make it through the summer.
William and Adelaide haven’t complained about it at all, but the summer is wearing on...

Book Review: Just Show Up

Kara Tippetsbattled cancer for two and a half years. During that time, many friends came around the Tippetts family to support and serve them. Kara is now home in Heaven, but before passing from this life to the next, she and her friend, Jill Lynn Buteyn, wrote a book about walking with a friend through suffering. Kara and Jill loved and served each other well, and their friendship is an example to follow. Their book,  Just Show Up , will be a helpful resource to others who are going...

Five Minute Friday: Clinging to Hope

Clinging to Hope
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so...

The Amazing Story of a Simple Coin Purse

This is a simple, little coin purse, but it has an amazing story.
This coin purse comes from Zambia, it and it was made by women who are employed through Clothed in Hope. When Fair Trade Friday partnered with Clothed in Hope and placed an order for hundreds of coin purses, there was cheering and dancing in Zambia! What we see as simple coin purses were cause for celebration by these women in Zambia. I’ll let someone from Clothed in Hope tell the story:
The women of Clothed in Hope, all vulnerab...

Changing Lives with Fair Trade Friday

For several years now I have been praying for Mercy House, a maternity home in Kenya for pregnant and teenage moms. The girls who are brought to Mercy House have all become pregnant as a result of rape or because of forced prostitution. They come from tragic and heartbreaking situations, but at Mercy House they find hope and support. It has been a joy to watch the countenance of these girls change as they are rescued out of poverty and as they come to know Jesus. What a transformation! Throug...

Awana

Our family enjoyed another year of Awana at our church. I was not able to attend at all this year, but I was able to help William and Adelaide with their verses at home each week. What a privilege to help them memorize God's Word!
We were gone on The Great Adventure during the Awana parent's night and awards program, so William and Adelaide received their awards after we returned home.

Adelaide finished her second Cubbies book this year. It is hard to believe that my youngest is already finishe...

The Year of Adventure

My family is calling 2015 “The Year of Adventure.” We have known for a while that big changes were coming this year. We didn’t (and still don’t!) know what the near future holds for our family, but whatever comes, we are determined to enjoy the adventure!
You may remember that when we moved to Minnesota three years ago, it was for a temporary pastoral position at a church here. Originally Will was going to work at the church for two years. His position was extended for one extra year, and now...

Book Review: Grace Leads

I was delighted when Stacey Patrick sent me a review copy of her first book, Grace Leads. I have been doing this study for the past 5 weeks during my morning devotion time, and it was just what I needed on many of my tired and brain fogged days.

Grace Leads is a unique devotional study. Stacey wrote a devotional series on her blog about grace and has now turned that series into a book, which is available in paperback or a kindle edition. This book can be read as a daily devotion, or you can ta...

Busy Hands: A Blue Beard!

I like to keep my hands busy while resting in bed, and one of my favorite ways to do this is by crocheting. The disappointing thing about crocheting is that there aren't many patterns that are cool for a 9 year old boy. There are plenty of things I can crochet for babies, for Adelaide, and for myself, but there isn't much that I can crochet for William. So I was thrilled this spring when I found out that William was going to be Bluebeard in the Pirates musical at his school and that I would n...
