The Weekly Rune – Kenaz Reversed
Expansion comes around the corner, this week.
Nauthiz persists as the half-month rune, through 28 November. Read right to left is Nauthiz, followed by Kenaz reversed as the intuitive stave.
Following is a summary of The Weekly Rune. Read the full runecast, and get the Samhain Sabbat cast, as well. Likewise, sign up to get all the details for my new year-long Intensive Reclaiming the Runes – Putting the ‘Elder’ Back in Futhark. This Intensive is focused on teaching the story of the runes in as full a context as possible, and instructing on how to work with them as a personal tool for growth, and a facilitator of gaining insight for others.
The story presented through the Dead Time has been one of radical letting go. As we crested the peak of Nauthiz last week, we were asked to take a leap of faith. This week Kenaz asks us to drop the illusions that keep us stuck.
We’ve spent the last couple of weeks addressing Nauthiz as a crossroads. Through it, Nature gives us a seasonal opportunity to shed some aspect of life or self that no longer supports us. It is a built-in elemental support system to facilitate that outcome. Despite how challenging Nauthiz feels, it contains its release.
This is our greenlight. It may be one of the ugliest greenights ever, yet it is what it is.
I’ve said before, Nauthiz is the corner we must walk around, without knowing what lies beyond. We can’t back up, can’t go another direction. We can’t stand still. Kenaz reversed adds to that tension, in that it suggests an unconscious drive that is burning to burst through to consciousness. It is known. That tiny thought or instinct that skirts the edge of awareness, yet won’t blossom into a fully formed idea–invite it in, this week. Court it like the love of all of life, because in a way it is. It’s a part of ourselves that needs attention. More than that, it needs expression.
Allow personal process this week, however it manifests. Trust self. Trust the natural cycle that has been given to us as capable of handling whatever you bring. Line up the Dream Team of support. Make the phone calls you need to. Schedule the therapy sessions. Ring the shaman. Queue up Netflix. This will pass, because all things do. Stay active in the unfolding.
And keep in mind the co-worker or loved one losing it is going through the same thing.

The Weekly Rune – Gebo
If we have to have Nauthiz, it might as well come with Gebo.
Nauthiz holds through the heaviness of the Dead Time as the half-month rune, through 28 November. Read right to left is Nauthiz, followed by Gebo.
The story presented is one of radical letting go, over the last two+ weeks. As we stepped into Nauthiz this past week, we were asked to take a leap of faith.
Where Hagalaz is the first of the winter rune trio, indicating the beginning of the freezing season, Nauthiz follows it as a frozen crossroads, concluded by Isa, the stillness before thawing.
In short, the vibe of things of late–we’ve got another six-ish weeks of it. Make peace with it. The bright spot of Nauthiz is that it can’t be reversed. It has to be approached exactly as it presents, on its terms. It is the corner we must walk around, without knowing what lies beyond. We can’t back up. There’s no other direction. We can’t stand still. Find peace in the fact that movement is flow. It is progress, and despite the daunting task of turning that corner into who-the-hell-knows-what, it’s progress to a needed outcome.
Gebo certainly doesn’t hurt. Meaning “gift,” it speaks more to the exchange of energy, balance, how that very exchange, itself, is a gift. Something around that corner brings that balance. It contributes to tempering the discomfort of Nauthiz, and likely can give us a boost to recognize the wisdom of Isa when it reveals itself in a couple of weeks.

The Weekly Rune – Sowilo
Warmth in the cold greets us, this week.
Hagalaz holds through the dawning Dead Time as the half-month rune, through 13 November. At that point, Nauthiz, moves to the fore. Read right to left is Hagalaz above, Nauthiz below, followed by Sowilo (Sowilu).
Last week, calendar-Samhain posed a time of realizing the rhythm of life as a constant cycle of opening, deepening awareness, coming into self as a creator of wyrd, alongside realizing that shit happens. To further that narrative, Nauthiz moves us into the heart of decisions and self-confrontation.
Where Hagalaz is the first of the winter rune trio, indicating the beginning of the freezing season, Nauthiz follows it as a frozen crossroads, concluded by Isa, the stillness before thawing. At the end of this week we witness the transition from Hagalaz to Nauthiz, and are faced with constraint.
Nauthiz forces us to realize where we’re standing in our own way. This week, Nauthiz says details are the problem. Being stuck at this crossroads isn’t the result of lack of attentiveness or need to suss out a specific hold up. The stuckness comes from not being at peace that there is a crossroads.
It would be a cold, bleak spot were it not for Sowilo (sun). Sowilo is the stave of realizing our place in divinity, not just that we are divine, but that we are part of the divine process. That doesn’t mean we sit around basking in our divineness, but we must act, we must create with intention.

The Weekly Rune – Isa
The Hel we know isn’t the best option, this week.
Hagalaz holds through the dawning Dead Time as the half-month rune, through 13 November. Read right to left is Hagalaz, followed by Isa.
Last week the narrative shifted to an internal exploration of how we deal with external life. At Samhain the position of Hagalaz in runic calendar indicates a time of realizing the rhythm of life as a constant cycle of opening, deepening awareness, coming into self as a creator of wyrd, alongside realizing that shit happens.
Specifically, Hagalaz brings external harsh change. Generally regarded as a new conflict that challenges inner reserves to make sure they know what they think they know, this first stave of the second aett puts us in the dreaded position of starting all over again. It puts us in our place, and makes us walk it like we talk it.
More curious along that line is the intuitive stave, Isa. Part of the winter family with Hagalaz and Nauthiz, where Hagalaz is hail, Isa is ice, pure and simple.
Or, not so simple.
Where Hagalaz brings a drop-the-mic change in our lives, Isa encourages us not to rush too quickly from its heart. If we do, we’ll miss some vital wisdom, some twist of learning that’s required to move forward. Sure, we can bolt at the first sign of opportunity just to save ourselves the turmoil, but doing so will be without the wisdom of how to grow from such experiences.
The synergy of these runes reinforces not reacting just to make crummy feelings or situations stop, but to stay with them, transmute them, and become the force within them. Such is the true power of creation. Such is the difference between initiation and initiated.

Celebrate the Small Things – Gratitude
My weekly gratitude post, in the Celebrate the Small Things [ongoing] Blog Hop.
I’m grateful for fabulous date night with Rob!
I’m thankful for 19 years with Rob, and ANOTHER date night with him! WHAT? I know! It’s crazy!
At Samhain I honor those who have passed in my life this year, and there have been so many. Our family has again been faced with a generation swept away all at once, and new elders rising. It’s challenging life stuff. I’m grateful to have known Brandon Jones, Marian Harrell, Frances Galbraith, Helen Sauls, and Crystal Hall.
I’m grateful for things coming together for One Tribe, which is coming up in a few weeks.
I’m happy for healing progress with my shoulder although sad panda that it’s brought new pain.
I’m thankful to have gotten a good start on my new novel.

The Dead Time – The Other One With Hotel Phillips
Remember I said last time, my encounter with Hotel Phillips got creepier 11 years later? Keep in mind that when I work with the dead–or just get the shit scared out of me by them–I don’t research who/what/when to make the etheric fit history. I just do the work that’s presented and move on, literally. I don’t hang out in mind or body where I do deathwork.
So, imagine my surprise when last year, out-of-the-blue, I get an email from the niece of the killer.
Yep.
If you like your spooky closer to home, I’m including a bonus story today, House on Summit Drive, about my childhood home. Because terror isn’t just for travels, and the impacts of trauma are often closer to home than we realize.
