The Weekly Rune – Berkana
Informed detachment serves us well, this week
Eihwaz is the half-month rune through 28 December. The half-month rune is set by the traditionally accepted runic calendar, and governs for a tad over two weeks. Read right to left is Eihwaz, followed by Berkana (Berkano) as the intuitive stave. The intuitive stave brings the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus for the present week.
Following is a summary of The Weekly Rune. Read the full runecast for more details on how these runes impact human life force over the next week, and how to best manage the curves and twists.
Likewise, sign up to get all the details for my new year-long Intensive Reclaiming the Runes – Putting the ‘Elder’ Back in Futhark. This Intensive is focused on teaching the story of the runes in as full an Old Norse context as possible, and instructing on how to work with them as a personal tool for growth, and a facilitator of gaining insight for others.
The calendar New Year greets us at the cusp stave of Eihwaz. The 13th rune in the traditionally accepted ordering of the Elder Futhark, it indicates a death, or transformation, from which we can’t turn. Likewise, this rune can’t be reversed.
Having come through Jera at the Winter Solstice, we have settled into the realization that we don’t have to do things alone. Jera is the acquisition of tools, perhaps allies. Eihwaz brings the reality check, of a double-edged sword variety. While it reminds us that we are alone no matter what helpful trinkets we may have in our [metaphorical?] pockets, it also reminds us that self-power really is enough.

Berkano brings an interesting detachment to this meeting of selves. This stave is wrapped in intrigue, in that it’s not clearly attested in the Elder or Younger futharks. It represents a tree in both, though different trees–it’s a birch in one, and a fir tree in the other. In that light, Berkano is a bit of a trickster, of deep sorcery. What remains significant is its connection to feminine healing, though it’s contested as being maternal in nature. It’s often more readily attributed to the role of mid-wife, certainly feminine and nurturing, though without the emotional strings of motherhood.
Focus on navigation by internal needs, not external planning. It’s the way home this week.

The Weekly Rune – Ingwaz
There’s a new consciousness in town.
Jera is the half-month rune, through 28 December, at which point Eihwaz moves to the fore. The half-month rune is set by the traditionally accepted runic calendar, and governs for a tad over two weeks. Read right to left is Jera above, Eihwaz below, followed by Ingwaz as the intuitive stave. The intuitive stave brings the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus for the present week.

The New Year, at least according to the sun, rang in with a joyful Wunjo. The stave of all elements of the creative process–force, form, and the magick that is–working in perfect collusion, Wunjo was a wonderful note to start on after several months of challenge.
Jera, or “year,” is the rune of inventory, or “Hearth Accounting 101,” as I call it. Jera is the realization that we don’t have to do things alone.

What’s dazzling about this particular year is the promise of Ingwaz. A curious stave, it speaks of the creation of a new tribe, which historically is the Ingaevones. They were one of the Germanic tribes created by Mannus (Mannaz), son of Tuisto (Tyr/Tiwaz), which came to be a new humanity. Ingwaz is the new consciousness. It is the product of a great deal of introspection and soul searching. Considered the seed rune of what can become, at this time of managing a new self, we can grow it to become whatever we want.
I wish you sweet planting of it in this new light.

Since Samhain, the Dark Time has been fraught with several reversed staves. In fact, it has been the longest string of reversals since I began writing The Weekly Rune three years ago. In the tradition I follow, Samhain marks the end of the year, while Winter Solstice indicates the new year. This week’s runes indicate a happy new year, indeed.
Jera, or “year,” is the rune of inventory, or “Hearth Accounting 101,” as I call it. Historically, the Northern Tradition was headed into the thick of winter, and it was necessary to know what provisions were at hand, how long they’d last, how many they would feed and warm, and what needed to be kept back to plan for the coming year. A very practical time, planning was essential, as was rationing.
Read the full runecast on Jera.
Wunjo as the intuitive stave is icing on an already hard-earned, sweet cake. When I do personal readings for clients, they all want Wunjo to come up in the cast. Certainly it’s a great memo from the Multiverse when it does. Indicating all cylinders firing as they should in terms of orlog and wyrd. The final stave of the first aett, it gives two thumbs up that we have managed to align our effort (force) with our embodiment (form) of creative pursuits, and we can take a reprieve to enjoy that state.
Remember this process. It is what underlies All Things. It is the blue print to make it happen again.
I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful Winter Solstice.

We’ve had a lot of reversals, lately, including Mannaz reversed last week. It’s a brilliant omen that it comes upright now, opening the opportunity for new awareness and tribe.
Jera is the realization that we don’t have to do things alone. We can draw on past experience (wisdom), we can apply that knowledge to our present choices (orlog), which can impact how we move forward (wyrd). It is the point along the hero’s journey that we acquire sidekicks and allies to help us with that process.
Mannaz brings a brilliant opportunity for doing just that. Focused on community, Mannaz connects us with people and consciousness with which we are not already affiliated. Get the full details on Mannaz.
Such is the creative potential at our fingertips this week. We have been under the duress of the winter runes. We now sit at an opportunity to create something of it.
Step out of your norm. Stretch beyond your potential, and you will be met with what manifests it.

The Weekly Rune – Mannaz Reversed
Be thyself, this week.
Isa is the half-month rune, through 13 December. The half-month rune is set by the traditionally accepted runic calendar, and governs for a tad over two weeks. Read right to left is Isa, followed by Mannaz reversed as the intuitive stave. The intuitive stave brings the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus for the present week.
Following is a summary of The Weekly Rune. Read the full runecast for more details on how these runes impact human life force over the next week, and how to best manage the curves and twists.

We’ve had a lot of reversals, lately. Ansuz reversed last week was a doozy of tangled intentions and garbled communication of them. This week Mannaz reversed pushes us to think for ourselves.
In the midst of the last of the winter runes, we round in on deeply needed insight. I’m talking late into the night, wee hours, gnashing of teeth, release into wisdom we’ve had all along, insight.
That’s the thing about Isa, and all of the winter runes, really. They get a bad rap for being shadowy and bringing this fury of stagnation with explosive change, yet it’s change we knew was needed. We knew it was coming. Given that, Isa is more about being very clear on what’s really important, what’s really needed, and getting out of its way so that it can manifest.
The work in setting up that self has been done, and Mannaz reversed indicates that. Mannaz is about community, connecting with people and consciousness with which we are not already affiliated. It indicates that our thoughts are on the right track. Reversed, it means slow down. Don’t overthink, and know that the deciding factors aren’t going to come from an external influence. They will come from within.

The Weekly Rune – Ansuz Reversed
Listen closely, this week.
Isa is the half-month rune, through 13 December. Read right to left is Isa, followed by Ansuz reversed as the intuitive stave.
Following is a summary of The Weekly Rune–the half-month stave, along with an intuitive stave of the week. Read the full runecast, for more details on how these runes impact human life force over the next week, and how to best manage the curves and twists.

This Intensive is focused on teaching the story of the runes in as full a context as possible, and instructing on how to work with them as a personal tool for growth, and a facilitator of gaining insight for others.
As we crested the peak of Kenaz reversed last week, we were asked to take a leap of faith. This week Ansuz encourages us not to rush the delivery or interpretation of an awaited missive.
Now we begin the last of the winter runes. Having trudged through the hardship of Hagalaz and taken a leap of faith with Nauthiz, we reach a point of stillness in Isa. I do mean rather literally “in Isa,” as it brings a sort of trapped state of being. What’s significant about it is, it’s somewhat a stillness of our own devising, and deep down we know it.
Ansuz reversed gives a good bit of commentary on the options available. Generally regarded as meaning breath, or speech, Ansuz is that process of attributing names to things. We take for granted how complex that process is, though it determines how we view everything. What we call things, how we describe dynamics determines how we feel about them, how we respond to them. Ansuz is a pretty big deal.
In that light, when it’s reversed, that process isn’t as clear as usual, or it’s not as it seems. In fact, expect things not to be what they seem. This can indicate a straight-up deception, or personal crud occluding clear channels.
Stick to personal truth, though hold it loosely enough to see if it’s changed or flat-out wrong. Have the Dream Team on high alert. Nothing is going to break out into a radical new groove this week, though the plans for exactly that are being laid for the near future.
