On writing

Writing is like giving yourself homework, really hard homework, every day for the rest of your life. You want glamorous? Throw glitter at the computer screen. - Katrina Monroe -

Dear Body

Dear Body, You appear to have a split personality trapped somewhere in Oz. There are days you act like the Tin Man: muscles tightening up until we’re a pile of rust. Yet, other days we’re the Scarecrow: ligaments giving up, body parts all a flop. Then you sometimes give yourself made-up-pain, as if the aches you already have were not enough. Just so we’re clear: that’s not yellow-brick-road to finding courage. I offered to drag you to a psychiatrist, but the medical gods say that won’t fix you. They say it is always going to be this way: you changing...

I was informed that my story Face Rock would be part of the Retelling project by Ludic Press. Since then I've come across Sara Bareilles. I've decided her song, Fairytale, is the unofficial anthem for the project.

What I read over the long weekend

Bryon Loker, New Swell - Usually in these situations you send people like Carl to the nearest petrol station with a two-liter Coke bottle, his thumb, and a stern reminder that he is an idiot. Our options were slightly more limited this time. - - Mossel Bay was where the harsh reality of being on the road like Jack Kerouac hit us hard, like a shot of Jack Daniel's at 6am. - - . . . Bemidji, Minnesota, the most romantic place in the world. - - Darrington didn't say it tasted like shit, but he didn't say, 'Mmm! This...

This makes me want to laugh

If you're looking for sympathy you'll find it between shit and syphilis in the dictionary. - David Sedaris, Barrel Fever* - * Confess, I first came across this saying reading Shannon Stacey's Kowalski Family serie. But google says the saying originates with Sedaris.

Letting my clothes do the laughing for me

As many of you are aware, I managed to hurt myself yesterday by sitting on my ass and being alive. These sorts of injuries take a special kind of talent. Doctor suspects cracked rib, but these injuries caused by ‘internal factors’ do not show up on an x-ray for 10 days. Given my own health history, I suspect the bones are fine and I’ve yanked a ligament. I like to beat to a different drum. In the meantime, my husband had to tape me up because I already own better medical tape than the doctor. I am also on a...

On the desk

Phumzile Simelane Kalumba, Jabulani When it comes to naming characters many 'How to Write' manuals site Barbara Kingsolver's trick of consulting a baby name book. Useful advice, unless you are in South Africa where bookstores stock baby name books from the USA or UK. Frustrating. So when Modjaji announced they were publishing a dictionary of South African Names, I couldn't pull out my money fast enough. It arrived yesterday: Jabulani, by Phumzile Simelane Kalumba
