Eva’s Byte #235: Curtains—or, so I Thought!
Well, another nice mess I’d gotten myself into!
Not one to shy away from writing about my mechanical ineptitude or lack of tech savvy, it’s easy for me to trip wires. The latest mishap occurred while flying through the air with the greatest of ease on my keyboard trapeze.
In the midst of drafting chapter 36 within my Work in Progress, the metaphorical lights went out. The “view” of my document metamorphosed into read mode, the tool bar disappeared, and editing was not enabled.
A doomsday prepper prepared for life’s uncertainties, such as a computer crash, I am mindful of safeguarding my document by emailing myself copies to two accounts at the end of each writing session. So, undaunted, I downloaded one of the reserve copies, and moved it to the file my novel occupies.
Horrors! A cloned copy in read mode under the same restrictions!
Now panicking, thinking it was curtains for me, I placed a call to my computer tech. Lo and behold, I had to leave a message. Darn! A writer who burns the midnight oil, it’s hard for me to believe there are people who set reasonable limits to their work day.
Like Mr. Magoo, the cartoon character, I stumbled upon the solution purely by accident or Divine Intervention. With nothing to lose, I clicked on the tippity top of the screen in my document.
Voila! Thenceforth, I was able to get the toolbar back, and navigate view mode from there.
I’m back in the saddle, resuming my journey along the arduous trails of a writer.
Necessity is the mother of ingenuity!

Eva’s Byte #414 – Unfrozen in Time
Having previously alluded to those somethings that gotta give living the life of a writer, mine is cooking. If I’m not dining out or grabbing takeout, heating up a frozen entrée will do. Barring a once-in-a-blue-moon venture in the kitchen, it’s how I roll.
My doozy of the week involved one of those frozen entrees which was nowhere to be found when unpacking my groceries. Searching high and low in all of the wrong places one might logically rummage for such an item, it never turned up. My search even included checking inside my vehicle, thinking I might have left a bag behind. Nope. So, I dismissed the unsolved mystery.
A few days later, bringing my mother back to her place of residence after one of our outings, she headed to her room with two bags of weekly provisions. You can imagine my surprise when she called to let me know she discovered that entrée “unfrozen in time,” which she discarded.
Sheesh!
In the capacity of a writer, I’m forging through the draft of chapter 30 (1034 words thus far) in my Contemporary work in progress. You might say I’m frozen in time depicting the early 1970s at this juncture of the story.
*May each of us prioritize what is important to pursue on any given day.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #438 – An UH-OH Moment!
Not the first or last UH-OH moment, I’m sure, but one nonetheless.
Most of my UH-OH moments revolve around a lack of mechanical aptitude, magnified by fear of taking on such endeavors. My most recent debacle occurred while replacing my printer’s ink cartridges.
Since my jalopy of a printer still works, and my computer tech told me to stick with it rather than acquire a newer model, I have. As a major office supplies retailer no longer carries this model’s ink cartridges, I’d been advised to purchase remanufactured cartridges.
This time, having a dickens of a time removing the seal tape on the black ink cartridge—wait for it—I inadvertently removed the chip.
Oops!
Fortunately, I reinstalled the old black ink cartridge, did a printout test, and the quality was great. Overcompensation from the new colored ink cartridge, perhaps. Anyway, I ordered a new black ink cartridge, the wiser for my ways the next time around.
In the capacity of a writer, I’ve rallied to the finale of Chapter 40 (970 words) along my Contemporary work in progress. I’m just starting to ink the draft for Chapter 41 (267 words thus far).
*May each of us spring forward from any setbacks encountered along our journey.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #479 – A First Time for Everything
Although the movement to go braless gained momentum in the 1960s, this conventional child of the Sixties never did—until the other day.
There’s a first time for everything!
While out and about, a mishap occurred. I’d become unhinged. Rather than conduct the rest of my business in a half-hearted, lopsided manner, I discreetly gave the offender the slip inside my vehicle, with no one the wiser.
Spurn, baby! Spurn!
Then, getting over myself, I cruised the aisles of the supermarket in blissful anonymity.
NEWS FLASH: In the capacity of a writer, I finished drafting my Contemporary work in progress. I’m in the process of editing.
*May each of us defy conventions which no longer fit our mindset.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #538 – The Spill
Not the first. Probably the third. Not the last, I fear:
My fully loaded 20-oz. lidded coffee tumbler took a tumble off of a makeshift stand (an inverted 1.8-gallon waste basket) near my office desk.
On the Richter scale of spills, I’d rate it a 6 as opposed to a 10. This time the plush scatter rug under my feet absorbed most of the liquid. This time, my replacement fabric storage bin to the right of my desk, was unaffected.
However, coffee had also soaked into a small area of the carpet.
“Out, damned spot!” (Lady MacBeth)
Easier said than done, other than tossing the scatter rug.
The saturated area required frequent rounds of blotting with paper towel. This madness was followed by serial shampooing and more blotting until the residue came up clear. Over the course of two days, the beige carpet was restored to its former glory.
In the capacity of a writer, I’m fully absorbed in drafting chapter 21 (1109 words thus far) of my Contemporary work in progress.
*May patience and perseverance see each of us through perilous times.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
