Enjoying a Break While It Lasts
As sometimes happens in private practice, I have a lull in between spikes of work. It's no hardship, as it's nice walking and gardening weather. This must be that holiday thing which I have heard employed people talk about.
I have three jobs promised, all of which are taking a while to actually get started. No doubt when they do, I will be having my arm twisted to hit the original deadline despite the lost time in sending me the order/letter of instruction...
OTOH, it's a Friday. For some reason, people love to send out the letter of engagement after close of business on a Friday. I always check Saturday morning....

Taking It Easy, Holiday Booked
I have a long weekend spa break booked, looking forward to a little downtime. I have a couple of expert witness jobs on, and the long negotiation with respect to Process Plant Layout 3rd Edition will soon be done. I might have a short overseas trip once I'm back from holiday for one of the expert witness engagements. It's relatively quiet, which is Ok, after a busy year end/start. I've been doing this long enough that I enjoy the little lulls, rather than worrying. I'm sure it will pick up again soon.

Tailing Off: Water Expert Witness
Quite a few reports have gone out of the door recently, and I'm coming towards the end of work in hand. I might even get a holiday before it starts all over again.....

Insurance Report Chemical Engineer
Quite a bit of what I do nowadays isn't strictly expert witness work. I write quite a few technical reports to help insurers understand what happened in the circumstances surrounding a claim for property damage, business interruption etc. This tends to be rather less adversarial than litigation, but I'm not always sure that that helps....

New Year, New Claim: Water Expert Report
As I predicted in my last post, multiple requests for expert reports to do with court cases and insurance claims have come in in the last few weeks. Nevertheless, I find myself not snowed under with work, as arranging site visits and getting the documents asked for in requests of information quickly slows things down. That's fine with me, as the only one of these jobs which is proceeding in an urgent manner requires an overseas site visit asap.

Happy Sue Year: Expert Witness Process Engineer
There has still bit of business activity this week, and we have picked up a new, interesting European expert witness assignment. There are a fair few others on the books or about to come in, in various interesting locations. A lot of it is to do with insurance claims or arbitration. I'm sure people will recover their taste for suing each other in the New Year, so Happy Sue Year!

Expert Witness Water And Environmental Engineering
I have been making arrangements for meetings to do with some expert witness jobs, all to do with water or environmental issues. No-one is making any appointments for meetings this year, or even early next year. Everyone is basically already on holiday, it seems. I'm fine with that, but I like to tidy things up at year end.
I have also picked up a job to do with a novel technology, exploring its practical limits and marketability. It looks groundbreaking, but like every technology, I'm sure there are areas where it is most and least robust/safe/economical.
I'm also talking to a couple of publishers about a new book, and an update of an old one. I'll also probably be writing a few more Kirk Othmer/ Ullmanns articles, talking to the editor there in the new year. I have two new ones written and ready to submit by year end.
... And of course, I'm marketing my latest book, "Moran's Dictionary Of Chemical Engineering Practice". I'm hoping this one is going to do really well.
