Kirkus review for The Race to the New World
Kirkus has posted an enthusiastic review of The Race to the New World: "Hunter turns what seems like a well-known story into something well worth exploring again." Read it in full at http://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-rev...

back at it
After a lengthy absence, I'm back on goodreads. I've been just a tad busy researching and writing my next book, The Race to the New World, and completing course work for my doctoral program in history at York University. A doctorate requires you to do an incredible amount of reading, and unfortunately there has been very little time for reading for pleasure.
For those of you interested, my major field of study is Canadian history. My secondary field is Aboriginal history, and my elective field is US history. My planned dissertation will examine "cryptohistory" of New World discovery and in particular the misappropriation of Indigenous evidence such as petroglyphs and pictographs in theories of pre-Columbus arrivals.
The world edition of The Race to the New World comes out in September with Palgrave Macmillan, with a Canadian edition to follow with Douglas & McIntyre in Spring 2012. I have created a dedicated website for the book that can be accessed through my main website, or go directly to http://web.mac.com/dwh5/Site_3/The_Ra...

Catching up, check out Age of Discovery News
I'm seriously behind on posts here. So I'll try to cover off a few things.
My author website has gone through some rejigging. You can still find it at www.douglashunter.ca
I'm currently researching the careers of Christopher Columbus and John Cabot (Zuan Caboto). Stay tuned.
I've launched a new web blog (because I have nothing better to do). Age of Discovery News keeps track of news, events, resources and whatnot related to exploration history. It's at agediscoverynews.com

Book website
The website for Half Moon is gradually coming together.
Events are starting to be posted (a couple around NYC, Sept. 11-17). I've also posted several essays of interest to readers. Two of them, on who Henry Hudson was and the nature of his ship, the Half Moon, are adapted from the book. For readers more interested in the research process and the nature of the primary sources, I've posted two offerings. One discusses how small clues in the documentary record can yield big dividends. The other explains the nature and the evolution of the documentary record for Hudson's voyages. Some readers may find this a little "inside baseball," but these latter essays are intended to help readers learn more about the documents and their usage in writing historical non-fiction.

Coming to the Big Apple
It looks like I'm going to be in New York City from September 12-17 doing talks and participating in some panel discussions for Half Moon: Henry Hudson and the Voyage that Redrew the Map of the New World, as the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival in NY is celebrated. Bloomsbury is hammering out the details. I'll post firm info as soon as it is available.

Devil's Wind
I've set up a website for a work-in-progress, Devil's Wind. A synopsis and several chapter drafts are there. It's a work of narrative non-fiction in which a Great Lakes steamboat called the Waubuno mysteriously vanishes in 1879 with everyone aboard, provoking a search by an enigmatic Englishman with an exotic and tragic personal history, rooted in imperial India and the Mutiny of 1857.
This is an experimental way of developing a new book, letting readers have a glimpse of the sausage-making factory. I have no particular completion date in mind. Just chipping away at it.
You can read the first chapter draft on goodreads under my writing posts.

Who's Who in Canada? I am, apparently
Got a letter from University of Toronto Press, asking me to fill out a questionnaire so they can include me in the centennial edition of Canadian Who's Who. This may be the first step in the long and arduous journey toward the knighthood I have shamelessly craved.

Greetings
Hello all. I'm not the most efficient or attentive denizen of cyberspace, but I thought I'd have a go at using goodreads as another tool in keeping people up to date on what's going on with my work lately.
Half Moon: Henry Hudson and the Voyage that Redrew the Map of the New World, is steadily chugging towards its September 1/09 release by Bloomsbury Press. Canadians will be able to get it through its north-of-border distributor, Penguin. I've set up a website for it with some boffo advance reviews (Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus) which I haven't even had to aggressively edit to make sound positive. There are two essays, on Henry Hudson and his vessel the Half Moon, which draw on the content of the book.

Also visit Bloomsbury's site for the book:

I'm expecting to be touring in and around the Hudson RIver in early September. I'll try to keep everyone posted here.
More news, and info on the next big project, as it percolates forth.
